Purpose To describe the procedure for managing, conducting, and reporting fire drills 2. Scope This procedure applies to all SLCS employees and students 3. Definition of Terms Pass code A code needed for each building, received from Facilities and Maintenance Secretary, which is assigned to authorized employees in order to contact Stanley Security Solutions 4. Responsibilities Department Administrators/Building Principals - Plan and conduct fire drills (including unannounced drills) until students are familiar with the procedure. As fire drills are conducted, enter the required information on the Fire Drill Log. Submit the report to the Director of Operations at the end of the school year
Teachers - Ensure students can identify a fire alarm and what to do when a fire alarm sounds. Be aware of proper exit procedures for assigned room Building Engineers Understand operation and location of fire alarm panels. Must be able to silence and reset fire alarm panels Director of Operations Maintain records of completed District fire drills. Review the records for possible District-wide improvement Lunchroom Aides Assist students in the lunchroom in evacuating the building in the event of a fire drill during the lunch period 5. Procedure 6.1 Department Administrators/Building Principals shall: 6.1.1 Ensure all staff members are aware of the Fire Drill Procedure at the start of each school year 6.1.2 For schools, schedule a minimum of six (6) fire drills per year, with at least four (4) in the fall and two (2) in the remainder of the year 6.1.3 Schedule some fire drills between classes or during the lunch hour/break
period 6.1.4 Contact the Building Engineer to determine the test pull station for each drill 6.1.5 Obtain pass code from Facilities and maintenance Data Processor to contact Stanley Security Solutions 6.1.6 Contact Stanley Security Solutions (800) 252-4539 and advise them to disregard the fire alarm until they are notified to begin monitoring the fire alarm again 6.1.7 Contact the appropriate fire department dispatcher (using the phone numbers referenced above and advise them to disregard the fire alarm until they are notified to begin monitoring the fire alarm again 6.1.8 At the completion of each drill, enter the required information in a Fire Drill Log 6.1.9 During the fire drill, ensure the building is cleared of all students and personnel 6.1.10 After the fire drill is concluded, ensure the Building Engineer resets the fire alarm 6.1.11 After the fire alarm has been reset, contact Stanley Security Solutions and advise them to begin monitoring alarms again. Provide the pass code if required 6.1.12 At the end of the school year, send the Fire Drill Log electronically to the Director of Operations 6.1.13 For night school, coordinate fire drills with the building principal to minimize the impact on after school activities 6.1.14 For Administration Building / Support Buildings, conduct at least one fire drill per year Teachers shall: 6.2.1 Ensure students can identify a fire alarm 6.2.2 Ensure students know what to do before the first fire drill is conducted 6.2.3 Ensure classroom doors and windows are shut and lights turned off, if it can be done quickly 6.2.4 Exit building as you are, take only the class roster and leave
personal items behind (e.g. coats, lunch boxes, books) 6.2.5 Ensure students remain quiet and follow directions 6.2.6 Make sure students walk in an orderly fashion to a designated assembly area (further than 300 feet from the building) 6.2.7 Proceed with students to the assembly area 6.2.8 Keep all students in the class together 6.2.9 Using the class roster, take attendance confirm that all are present and if a student is missing, immediately notify the principal or designee 6.2.10 Remain in the designated assembly area until the all clear is sounded (ringing of school bell) 6.2.11 Ensure all students return to the building in an orderly manner 6.2.12 Ensure physically disabled students are assisted in vacating the building 6.3 Building Engineers shall: If required, silence the fire alarm after each fire drill Reset the fire alarm after each fire drill Reset all fire doors released during a fire drill Reset all fire dampers released during a fire drill 6.4 Director of Operations shall : 6.4.1 Maintain the District Fire Drill Log Records 6.4.2 Annually review the District Fire Drill Logs for possible district-wide improvements 6.4.3 Annually report results of Fire Drill Log reviews to the District Safety Committee and Safety Council 6.5 Lunch Aides
