General Purpose Cabinets The general purpose [GP] cabinets are designed to effectively handle a broad range of laboratory agents. Their attractive white and charcoal exterior compliment most laboratory furniture. The aerofoil design ensures uniform face velocities with sash fully open and minimizes turbulence while maximizing the recovery of disrupted airflow patterns. The front low level slot under the stainless steel aerofoil and internal baffle positioning provides for the efficient removal of all fumes including heavy gases. The moulded work surface and sides with radius corners and smooth crevice free surfaces, allows easy cleaning and no buildup of contaminants Airflow Design General purpose extraction fume cabinets are supplied in four different airflow designs: Bypass Auxiliary (very outdated) Labcontrol [see page 19 variable air volume (VAV)] Low Flow Energy conservation will decide your selection. See our systems design information for guidance on detailed criterion of integrated system design parameters. The specifications herein are for the individual cabinets. The laboratory furniture and other peripherals are separate to the cabinet requirements. Benefits of Moulded Composite Interior The interior of the GP cabinet is that of a moulded GRP composite Vinyl Ester, with an internal strengthening core and a high gloss, ice white, Vinyl Ester gel coat finish that provides: Durability for years of use with excellent resistance to discoloration and cracking. High level of chemical resistance to a wide range of acids, solvents and alkalis. The chemical resistance of our vinyl ester exceeds that of epoxy and stainless steel Labaire composite cabinets do not withstand high temperatures very well. The resistance to absorption does not allow for staining. The smooth surfaces and corners do not allow contaminants to collect. The ice white internal gel coat provides a high light intensity The efficient baffle positioning allows for reduced static pressure and therefore smaller blowers with reduced energy consumption and noise emission. Fire resistance for safe operation in accordance with local and international regulations 3

Fume Extraction Scrubbers Specifications for a fume scrubber When is scrubber required? 1. When emission concentrations to atmosphere exceed the statutory requirements set by government or local gazette, Health regulations requirements etc. 2. When emission concentrations to atmosphere are required to be reduced due to other factors. 2.1. Position of exhaust cowl near to another window, building, intake air system etc. 2.2. Toxic nature of emissions may cause third party damage claim 3. When the extraction system (duct, filters, fan etc) must be washed down to ensure no buildup of residue e.g. Perchloric acid. Most chemical plants and chemical laboratories generate toxic fumes and gases as part of their normal operational activities. The worldwide tendency of the public forcing their governments to enforce stricter control on the toxification of the atmosphere forces companies to remove the toxic fumes from the air streams they resubmit to the atmosphere. The equipment used to do this detoxification, are called chemical scrubbers. The contaminated air stream is passed through a system where the toxic elements present are chemically changed to an element that is readily removed from the air stream. The air stream released is thus cleaned to a level, which could be reintroduced to the atmosphere. This emitted air stream now complies with the statutory requirements for air pollution. The type and size of scrubber required for any particular application varies depending on many factors. External Scrubber outside of the extraction hood Scrubbers for The external scrubber is usually housed outside the building or certainly outside the confines of the extraction cabinet. The latter is far more efficient than the fore however costs a lot more. Your application will decide on which system to use. 1. Scrubbers 1.1. The scrubber is fitted with an optional venturi prescrubber or internal spray system as later described (Internal Scrubber). This prescrubber wets any solids particles very efficiently. The solids are then captured into the neutralizing liquid and knocked out of the air stream before it gets to the packed column. It has the added effect that some of the gaseous contaminants are also transformed, i.e. scrubbed before it hits the packed column. Recirculation tank in chemical storage stand underneath the extraction hood. 8

1.2. The packed column consists of one or more modular sections, which are fitted one on top of the other. Each of these effectively has a neutralizing medium redistribution bed. (This is a feature not normally found in onceoff manufactured units, since it is too expensive to manufacture these by hand.) The column is packed with Pall rings to ensure sufficient surface area for scrubbing. The column height is matched to the outlet stream requirements. 1.3. Circulation Pump The system is fitted with a circulation pump, with ample spare capacity. It is manufactured from a phenol resin with a mechanical seal, again for long maintenancefree operation. The motor is fitted as a direct drive. This pump is also used to pump the neutralizing medium into the scrubberholding tank. 1.4. Demister The outlet of the scrubber is fitted with an oversize demister unit to ensure no emission of the scrubber medium liquid is emitted to the atmosphere. 9

Internal Scrubber System The everincreasing control on the level of emissions to the atmosphere has resulted in scrubber systems being specified for extraction fume cabinets. This can include for external or internal scrubber systems. The external scrubber is usually designed for a large air volume and for more than one extraction fume cabinet. The internal fume scrubber is an efficient system that accommodates the needs of that fume cabinets emissions. The scrubber consists of a series of spray nozzles mounted in rows behind the baffles inside the work area and the duct work prior to the scrubber. The air then moves through a packed bed, which ensures that the large surface area scrubs up any fumes that have not been caught by the spray nozzles. A demister then removes the moisture from the airstream and is returned to the recirculating tank. The entire wash down system is based on a recirculation system with an automatic neutralizing agent and fresh water top and daily cleaning cycle. The wash down scrubbing action continues while the unit is in operation. Due to the amount of water involved in the system, careful attention has to be taken in order to ensure that no water droplets enter the work area. The work area has a trough at the back behind the baffles where the return water is collected and then drained to the recirculation tank The under structure houses the recirculation tank, pump valves, inline filter, plumbing, drainage and sensing equipment. There are certain precautionary measures that need to be incorporated to ensure that the system functions correctly. These include: Velocity of the air through the rear baffle section Velocity of air through the inline duct filters Setting of PH Build up a residue in the recirculation tank Return of water to the trough no splashing and efficient drainage to recirculation tank Efficient dosing system to neutralize recirculation water keeping the PH at 7 Plumbing maintenance each piece of equipment must be able to be removed. Leaks in plumbing system Overflow Volume and Head pressure of recirculation pump Positioning of actuated valves Automatic Fresh Water top up Inline duct filter maintenance The internal scrubber must obviously have acid resistant components that includes the pump, plumbing, inline filter, valves, spray nozzles, couplings, sensors, electrics and the enclosure itself. 10

The LAMEX Extraction Fume Cabinet range is designed to meet the revised ASHRAE 1101995 standard. This standard employs a set of rigorous tests to evaluate hood performance. It includes airflow visualization test, face velocity measurements and tracer gas containment. The face velocity test includes an inner and outer grid where velocities are taken at specific positions. Fume hoods are highly energyintensive, each one consuming more energy than two to three homes (this in a controlled environment). The LAMEX High Performance Low Flow Hood operates at a face velocity of 0.3m/s as against a Conventional Hood of 0.5m/s. This means a 40% saving and when equated to cost savings it is substantial. High Performance Low Flow Hood Incorporating Laminar Topography Extra Features and Benefits LAMEX 1 against Standard Hood Extra height of 200mm giving line of sight at 1800mm. 5º pitch of the face for comfortable ergonomics, aesthetics and keeps a better sash seal. Three baffles for complete purging of work area. Lower baffle has strategic openings positioned to ensure a Laminar intake with the sash is in the 200457mm range. Middle baffle has a thermal heat relief zone for immediate removal of hot rising air. Internal access panels allows for easy maintenance when cabinets external access panel are inaccessible. Exhaust cowl stretches across the entire length of the interior thus ensuring an even intake of air. Standard Features LAMEX range Stainless steel or composite interior with integral work surface. Varying Fume Hood & Room Exhaust Air In conjunction with Room Supply Air No matter what type of fume cabinet you may order a VAV device maybe fitted. It is important to understand that this device must be interfaced with the room supply air (air conditioned or not) and the exhaust air. The VAV system with the electronic control pad has great advantages as real time information linked to a BMS can be monitored. It also opens the opportunity to include motion sensing devices and electronic monitoring of sash height linked to an alarm system. On/off fan and lighting times can be set so exhaust fumes are not left running overnight. Override features for manual activation can be applied and very sophisticated set of parameters worked within. This sophistication is as good as the control measures that exist with the management infrastructure of the Building Management System. Features The VAV damper is motorised to open and close according to the sash height. While the exhaust air from the Fume Cabinet is increased or decreased so is the exhaust air from the room decreased or increased and the supply air similarly varied to maintain temperature and pressure inside the laboratory room. A VAV is very seldom installed without an integrated system as the resultant fluctuating parameters within the laboratory will render noncompliance. All components are chemical resistant within the VAV damper. The external controller has components mounted in a plastic casing. Please see our detailed brochure on the integrated VAV systems. There are many factors to consider that require interlinking with the mechanical and airconditioning contractor. Variable Air Volume Devices 19

Labaire Resonate Liners The Labaire Resonate is a composite material designed for use as an internal liner. It has excellent chemical resistance, structural strength and a smooth attractive finish that is easy to clean. The advantage of internal liners as against a moulded interior is that a separate work surface of a more durable compound can be installed. The work surface needs additional properties as it is subjected to more hazardous procedures.
