Lab Safety

Lab Safety Begins Before You Go to the Lab! Science is a hands-on laboratory class. You will be doing many laboratory activities, which require the use of: Hazardous chemicals Expensive lab equipment Safety is our #1 priority. These rules must be followed at all times. A signed lab safety contract is required to participate in labs.

A hand will be held up by the instructor and SAFETY will be the key word. Stopping Work Everyone is to stop what they are doing. Return to their seats immediately without talking. Give full attention to the instructor.

Laboratory Preparation It is the expectation that you will complete all of the assigned reading before each laboratory. You must look up any unfamiliar terms and be prepared to ask questions. It is your responsibility to make sure that you know what we will be doing in the laboratory. You should try to answer as many of the assigned questions as possible before each laboratory.

Upon entering the laboratory you are expected to put on appropriate protective equipment. You are responsible for knowing the tasks to be completed for each laboratory assignment. The Laboratory Assignment Leave all unnecessary materials in the classroom You are expected to work as a team in your assigned group. You should avoid touching your face with your hands or rubbing your eyes while in the lab. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before leaving the laboratory.

The Laboratory Completion 1. Make sure all questions have been answered on laboratory notebook. 2. It is expected that you will return your bench top to the way you found it at the beginning. 3. You must then disinfect the laboratory bench top before leaving the laboratory. 4. You should assist the instructor in returning all safety equipment to its proper location. 5. You are required to assist other laboratory groups that have not yet finished their work.
