READ THIS FIRST Some important notes about the A1UL PERS: 1. The A1UL PERS cannot be activated wirelessly in an emergency until a WTRB/WTRA is added to it s memory. 2. The effective range of any wireless device used with the A1UL PERS is 75m (246 ft). Note that different materials used in the construction of buildings can reduce the range of the device. 3. The A1UL PERS should be tested regularly to ensure it s continued operation. Test all wireless devices used with the system. 4. The WTRX and WTRB automatically detect when their batteries are low. They will automatically transmit a low battery signal to the A1UL PERS every 12 hours once a low battery is detected. Once this point is reached, the battery has approximately 30 days of use left. Contact your distributor immediately to obtain a replacement transmitter. 2. OVERVIEW The A1UL PERS (Personal Emergency Response System) allows users to easily summon for assistance during a medical emergency or for additional security reasons. Users have the option of using the wireless pendant and wristband transmitter or the large, red EMERGENCY button on the console to activate the A1UL PERS. When activated the A1UL PERS will audibly notify the user that an activation has occurred by playing the Emergency message. The A1UL PERS also dials the telephone number of the central monitoring station (CMS) programmed during programming by the installer. At the time of programming, the programmer/installer has the option of selecting Digital only transmission (Non-Voice) to the CMS, or the two-way voice operation. If the Digital (Non-Voice) option is selected the unit will, following activation by the user, contact the CMS (as programmed by installer) and, after successfully connecting with the CMS, disconnect and reset itself. Please contact your CMS representative for dispatch procedures following a Digital transmission. If two-way voice mode is selected, after the signal is received by the CMS, an operator from the CMS will communicate with the user via the speaker and microphone contained within the A1UL PERS console. The user need not push the transmitter button again or pick up the telephone to communicate with the CMS operator once the A1UL PERS has been activated. The CMS operator will

disconnect and reset the A1UL PERS, the user will not have to manually reset the unit. During a false activation, the user can press the green RESET button on the console at any time to cancel an emergency activation and reset the system to standby mode. G H I J K L There are several programming methods available for programming the A1UL PERS. To program locally using the programming port located on the back of the unit, a special programming cord is available. Using the cord, the A1UL PERS can be programmed via a standard telephone with tone capabilities. Optional software is available for programming. The A1UL PERS is also equipped with the ability to program remotely from a location other than the primary residence of the user. The programming cord is not required for remote programming. Please refer to the manual for complete programming instructions. Other features of the A1UL PERS include: inactivity timer to monitor the activity of the user and notify the CMS if no activity is detected for a specified period of time; temperature sensor to monitor the temperature of the home and alert the CMS is temperatures become unsafe; telephone line detection to alert the user if the telephone line is disconnected from the unit or not working properly; power sensor to alert both the user and CMS if AC power is not being provided to the unit; battery supervision for both the personal transmitter and console, the CMS will be notified if battery conditions are low. 3. COMPONENTS A. Power LED (Green)! OFF - Unit has no power.! SOLID - AC power is applied.! FLASHING - AC power is lost. Unit is on battery backup. B. Alarm/Status LED (Red) Stand By Mode! OFF - Unit is in stand by mode.! FLASHING SLOWLY - The console backup battery is low.! FLASHING RAPIDLY - A wireless device used with the unit has a low battery. TOP VIEW F D E A B C Reporting To Monitoring Center! SOLID - Unit is reporting to the monitoring center.! FLASHING - The unit is currently in the 2- way voice mode. Incoming Call Answering (Speakerphone)! SOLID - The unit is currently in the speakerphone mode. REAR VIEW! OFF The unit has disconnected the current call.

C. RESET Button (Green)! Press it to cancel any alarm or status condition that is being sent to the monitoring center. Will send in a cancel signal if unit has already reached the monitoring center.! Will return unit to standby mode regardless of current state.! Used to reset the Inactivity Timer.! When pressed, the unit will play the status message(s) of any fault conditions present (such as a power failure or phone line problem).! The RESET button will stop the red Alarm/Status from blinking when a low battery condition exists.! Imprinted with Braille lettering for the visually impaired. D. EMERGENCY Button! Backlit for easy locating in low light conditions.! The backlight will flash identical to the Power LED.! Press to trigger a medical alarm.! Press once to answer an incoming call (if this feature is enabled)! Imprinted with Braille lettering for the visually impaired. E. Speaker G. Phone Jack Labeled This Plug To Wall Outlet! This jack should be connected directly to the residence s phone jack on the wall or floor.! This jack supports RJ-31x installations if used with the appropriate cable. H. Phone Jack Labeled Plug Phone Or Other Device Here! Plug the phone, answering machine caller ID box or other phone accessories into this jack. I. Temperature Sensor! Monitors the temperature of the residence.! Will report a high (105 F) or low (35 F) temperature signal to the monitoring center J. Programming Port! This port is used to connect the phone used for local programming. A special adaptor is required. K. Battery ON/OFF Switch! Turns the backup battery on or off.! Use this to shut the unit off if it is going to be unplugged for an extended amount of time.! WARNING If this switch is set to OFF and the AC power is lost, the unit will not be on battery backup. F. Microphone L. AC Power Adaptor

4. UNIT OPERATION Standby Mode While in Standby mode, the unit is ready to accept signals from any wireless device in its memory. Pressing the EMERGENCY button will activate the unit and it will begin reporting to the monitoring center while in Standby mode. Pressing the RESET button while the unit is in Standby mode will play the status messages of any fault conditions present at the time. Emergency Activation In an emergency, help can be summoned in one of two ways: 1. Pressing the personal help button (WTRB) that is worn by the client. 2. Pressing the EMERGENCY button on the console. Emergency Reporting Once activated, the unit will do the following:! It will begin playing the Emergency Help call in progress message repeatedly. It will stop once the A1UL PERS receives the Kiss-Off from the monitoring centers receiver.! The red Alarm/Status LED will light up while the signal is being reported to the monitoring center.! An alarm can be cancelled at any time by pressing the RESET button. The unit will play the Help call cancelled message. If the signal has already been reported to the monitoring center and 2-way voice has not been properly terminated, the unit will report a cancel by user signal to the monitoring center. attempt the backup number. It will alternate between the primary and backup numbers until it reaches a receiver successfully. It will make a maximum of 10 total dialing attempts. 2-Way Voice Operation Once the unit reports the alarm to the monitoring center successfully, it will do the following:! The red Alarm/Status LED will start to flash.! The unit will wait 2 minutes for the monitoring center operator to open 2-way voice. (If the 2- way voice feature is disabled in programming, the unit will simply hang up the line after reporting to the monitoring center).! The following DTMF commands are used to operate the 2-way voice: DTMF DIGIT COMMAND 1 Talk 3 Listen 2 Full-Duplex 9 Disconnect! If the A1UL PERS reports the alarm to the monitoring center successfully and the call is unexpectedly disconnected before any DTMF commands are issued to operate 2- way voice, the unit will dial the monitoring center again and report the emergency. The unit will keep resending the emergency until it receives at least one DTMF command.! The 2-way voice session has a time limit of 2 minutes. The timer is reset after any DTMF command is received. Answering Incoming Calls! If the A1UL PERS cannot reach the monitoring center on the primary phone number it will If enabled in programming, the A1UL PERS can be used to answer incoming phone calls. The unit will open up

into a full-duplex speakerphone in which the client does not have to pick up their normal phone.! The A1UL PERS will beep when it detects an incoming call.! The incoming call can be answered in one of two ways: 1. Press the button on any WTRX added to the system. 2. Press the HELP button on the console once.! The A1UL PERS will emit 2 beeps upon answering the incoming call.! The call can be disconnected one of two ways: 1. Pressing the button on any WTRX added to the system once. 2. Pressing the RESET button on the console.! The A1UL PERS will emit a single beep to indicate the call has been disconnected.! If there is an emergency at any time during the call, pressing the button on the WTRB twice or pressing the EMERGENCY button on the console once will disconnect the call and cause the unit dial the monitoring center and report the emergency.! There is a 30-minute time limit on each call. The unit will automatically disconnect after 30 minutes. AC Power Monitoring If enabled in programming, the A1UL PERS will continually monitor the status of the AC power to the unit.! If AC power is lost for more than 5 seconds, the unit will play the Power Failure- Check power cord status message twice. The green Power LED will begin to flash as well.! If AC power is not restored after 1 hour, the unit will report a power failure signal to the monitoring center.! Once AC power is restored for more than 5 seconds, the unit will play the Power restored status message once. The green Power LED will stop flashing.! Once AC power has been restored for more than 15 minutes (AND the A1UL PERS had previously sent a power failure signal to the monitoring center) the unit will report a power restoral signal to the monitoring center.! If AC power is lost, the A1UL PERS will automatically switch to battery backup. The unit can operate up to 24 hours on battery backup. NOTE: The backup battery takes 48 hours to charge completely. Telephone Line Status Monitoring The A1UL PERS continuously monitors the status of its connected phone lines.! If the telephone line is unplugged or the voltage on the line drops to 3.0 VDC for 15 consecutive seconds, the unit will play the Telephone line problem Check telephone connection status message twice.! Once the telephone connection is restored or the voltage is above 3.0 VDC for more than 15 seconds, the unit will play the Telephone line Restored message once.! If there is a problem with the wiring in a residence, the A1UL PERS may falsely report a problem with the phone line. This feature can be disabled in programming if needed. Temperature Monitoring

The A1UL PERS is equipped with a built in thermometer that continuously monitors the surrounding temperature.! If the temperature reaches 105 F (40 C) or higher, the unit will do the following: 1. Play the Temperature warning Unsafe Temperature Warning status message twice. 2. Report a high temperature alarm to the monitoring center.! If the temperature reaches 35 F (2 C) or lower, the unit will do the following: 1. Play the Temperature warning Unsafe Temperature Warning status message twice. 2. Report a low temperature alarm to the monitoring center.! Once the temperature returns to a safe level, the unit will report the appropriate temperature restoral (high/low) to the monitoring center. Mobility Timer If enabled in programming, the mobility timer will monitor the activity of the protected client. It is basically a timer that counts down. Every time the client interacts with the system, the timer restarts. If the timer ever expires without being reset, the A1UL PERS will report an inactivity alarm to the monitoring center. The length of the mobility timer is set in programming.! The following events reset the mobility timer: 1. The client presses the RESET button on the console. 2. The client activates an emergency call by either pressing the EMERGENCY button on the console or by activating their emergency pushbutton. 3. The A1UL PERS receives a signal from an optional PIR motion detector.! One hour before the timer is about to expire, the unit will play the Mobility timer expiring Please reset every five minutes.! If the timer expires without being reset, the unit will report an inactivity alarm to the monitoring center. Low Battery Reporting Devices Some devices automatically detect and send low battery signals to the A1UL PERS. Other devices only report low battery signals when they are activated. The table below lists the devices available for use with the A1UL PERS and their low battery reporting method: DEVICE WTRB/WTRX WTRA SD-7 Smoke Detector IR-7 Motion Detector METHOD Automatically Every 12 hours Upon activation Upon activation Upon activation When the A1UL PERS receives a low battery signal from one of it s devices, it will do the following:! The unit will beep 4 times. This will occur every time it receives a low battery signal.! The red Alarm/Status LED will flash rapidly. Pressing RESET will stop the flashing.! The unit will report the low battery condition to the monitoring center. It will report the zone of the device that has the low battery. Low Battery Reporting Console The A1UL PERS monitors the status of it s internal backup battery. It does not monitor the battery for 30 minutes after power up. If a low battery is detected in the console, the unit will do the following:! The unit will beep 2 times.

! The red Alarm/Status LED will begin to blink slowly. The blinking can be stopped by pressing the RESET button on the console.! The unit will report the low battery condition to the monitoring center.! Once the battery has returned to a normal level, the unit will report a battery restoral signal to the monitoring center. No Device Loaded The A1UL PERS will report a No Transmitter Loaded signal to the monitoring center 30 minutes after power up if there are no devices loaded into it s memory. Global Test Feature If enabled in programming, the A1UL PERS will run a self-check and report to the monitoring center if it passes. The Global Test is initiated by pressing RESET on the console and within 5 seconds activating a WTRB or WTRA that is loaded into memory.! Generally the unit should be programmed and tested before being placed in a client s home.! Refer to the section on programming the unit on page # 7. 2) Choose the Location of the Unit! The unit can be placed on a tabletop or other flat surface. It can also be mounted on a wall using the included mounting bracket.! The unit should be centrally located in the residence. This will ensure adequate coverage for both the wireless devices and the 2-way voice operation.! The unit should not be placed near microwaves or any other large appliances.! The unit should not be placed in locations where extremes in temperature are present (such as by radiators or heaters, near an air conditioner, in direct sunlight etc.) Periodic Test Report If enabled in programming, the A1UL PERS can send in automatic check-in reports to the monitoring center at a specified frequency. The frequency at which they are sent is set in programming. 3) Connect the Unit POWER! WARNING Do NOT plug the unit into an outlet that can be operated by a switch.! Only use the power supply that is included with the unit. 5. INSTALLING THE UNIT Installing the A1UL PERS is a simple procedure. Below is a quick list of the steps needed to install it. 1) Program the unit TELEPHONE! The jack labeled This Jack To Wall Outlet should be connected directly to the phone jack on the wall or the floor.! If the residence has older wiring, a 2- conductor telephone cord should be used. (This cord is provided with every unit). A 4- conductor cord could cause noise and

interference to the phone line in the residence.! If the client has DSL service in the residence, a DSL line filter may be required to connect the unit to the phone line. 4) Add Wireless Devices to the Unit! Any wireless device that is going to be used with the system must first be added to the unit s memory before it will activate the unit. 5) Test the Unit! The unit should always be tested after installation.! Test all devices that are added to the unit. This ensures complete operation of the system.! NOTE: Be sure to follow the procedures set in place by your monitoring station for testing a new unit. A) PROGRAMMABLE OPTIONS There are several options that can be set during the programming of the A1UL PERS. The A1UL PERS can be programmed locally using the programming port with a special adaptor or remotely from any touch-tone phone. There are two levels of programming in the A1UL PERS. Certain options are set in either level 1 or level 2 of the programming. Programming is done by pressing the key on the phone that corresponds to the desired setting for that option. The programming is automatically incremented to the next option when a selection is made. Below is a description of the options that are set during programming, their available settings and whether they are in the first or second level of programming 1) Inactivity Timer LEVEL 1 The Inactivity Timer can be used to monitor the activity of the protected client. If the set length of time expires and the A1UL PERS has not detected any activity from the client, it will report an Inactivity Alarm to the monitoring center.! Option #1 in 1 st Level. 6. PROGRAMMING This section is broken down into three parts: A. PROGRAMMABLE OPTIONS This lists all the options that can be set in programming and their choices. B. LOCAL PROGRAMMING Describes the process of programming the A1UL PERS locally using a programming phone.! SETTINGS 2) Dialing Method KEY SETTING 0 Disabled 1 12 Hours 2 24 Hours This option sets the dialing method of the A1UL PERS.! Option #2 in 1 st Level C. REMOTE PROGRAMMING Describes the process of programming the A1UL PERS from a remote location using the phone! SETTINGS line. KEY SETTING 1 Pulse Dialing 2 Touch-Tone Dialing

3) Message ON/OFF and Temperature Sensor ON/OFF This option controls 2 features. The voice messages that are played by the A1UL PERS can be turned on or off here. This is for ALL of the messages. They are either all on or all off. The second feature that can be turned on or off is the temperature detection..! Option #3 in 1 st Level! SETTINGS KEY SETTING ----- MSG. PLAY TEMP DET. 1 ON ON 2 OFF ON 3 ON OFF 4 OFF OFF 4) AC Power Monitoring and Global Test This option covers three operations of the A1UL PERS. The first is the AC power failure and restoral monitoring; the second is the telephone line status monitoring, third is the Global Test feature. If enabled, the A1UL PERS will monitor the AC power for the unit. If it is lost, the unit will play a warning message and report the failure to the monitoring center. Once AC power is restored, the A1UL PERS will report it to the monitoring center. If this feature is disabled, the unit will NOT monitor for AC power loss and the unit will play no warning message if AC is lost. This feature should only be disabled in areas that experience frequent temporary brownouts or blackouts or in other exceptional circumstances. If enabled, the A1UL PERS will continuously monitor the status of the telephone line. In some homes with multiple phones and/or poor wiring, the A1UL PERS may falsely detect a problem with the phone line. If this is true, the phone line status monitoring can be disabled in programming. The Global Test features is activated by pressing the RESET button on the A1UL PERS and within 5 seconds activate any wireless push button that is in the units memory. The unit will emit a short beep, perform a self test of itself and, if it passes, send the Global Test signal to the monitoring center. If this feature is disabled, the unit will report an emergency signal to the monitoring center whenever a pushbutton is activated regardless of when RESET was pressed.! Option #4 in 1 st Level! After entering the first 5 options, enter the unit s 4- digit account number next. The account number must be exactly 4 digits. 7) Primary Monitoring Center Phone Number After entering the account number, the primary phone number to the monitoring center is next.! The phone number can be between 1 and 15 digits.! If a 9 or other number is required to obtain an outside line, place it at the start of the phone number.! Enter a * in the phone number to add a 3 second pause in the dialing. As many * as needed can be entered. 8) End Of Phone Number Character After entering the last digit of the phone number, press the # key. This saves all the changes made to the programming and returns to the start position of the programming mode. 1) Press 7 LEVEL 2 Pressing 7 from the programming start position enters the second level of programming. 2) Periodic Test Feature If enabled, the Periodic Test feature will dial in and report to the monitoring station at a specified frequency. This verifies the correct operation of the phone line and that the A1UL PERS has power.! Changing The Remote Programming Access Code: The remote access code is a 3-digit code that must be entered to access the programming mode remotely. The factory default code is 111. NOTE: If the access code starts with a 0 (zero) the remote programming feature will be DISABLED. Step 2 - From the programming start position, press 8. Enter the new 3-digit access code. Step 2 - Step 4 - Step 5 - Call the line that the A1UL PERS is hooked up to. Answer the call using one of the phones on the line (preferably the one hooked into the jack labeled Plug Phone Or Other Device Here ) Once a connection is established, have the client press and hold RESET on the unit until the double beep is heard. The unit will emit a beep locally and through the phone line. At this point enter the current 3-digit access code. If the code is correct, the unit will play a single beep over the phone. This indicates that the unit is at the programming start position. The unit will not respond with any beeps if the wrong code is entered. NOTE: If an incorrect code is entered, the unit will not respond. A maximum of 3 incorrect entries can be made. After that, the unit will exit to the Standby mode. Step 2 - After the second beep, let go of the RESET button. Press and hold the EMERGENCY button. To enter Range Test mode: Step 4 - While holding down the EMERGENCY button, press the button on the device to be added. The unit will emit 2 short beeps. Release the EMERGENCY button The device is successfully added. If only one beep is heard, the device has already been added to the system. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each device that is to be added. Step 2 - Press and hold RESET on the A1UL PERS until the second beep. (About 5-7 seconds). After the second beep, the unit is in Range Test mode. Activate any wireless device that has been added to the unit. Every time the unit receives a signal from a device it will emit a beep without attempting to contact the monitoring center. Step 5 - Press the RESET button once to return to Standby mode. NOTE: The unit will automatically return to Standby mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. Deleting Devices Step 4 - When finished, press the RESET button once to return to Standby mode.! The A1UL PERS will automatically return to Standby mode if it does not receive any RF signals in 5 minutes. WARNING: This will erase all devices loaded into the A1UL PERS! Step 2 - Step 4 - Press and hold RESET on the A1UL PERS until the second beep. (About 5-7 seconds). After the second beep, let go of the RESET button. No Transmitter Loaded Automatic Check In Report Global Test Function Listen In Active The A1UL PERS checks to see if any wireless transmitters are in it s memory 30 minutes after power up.
