CE Marking of Metal Chimneys and Flues
Steel Chimney Programme Schiedel is the leading producer of ceramic chimney systems in Europe, and are now regarded as the market leaders in prefabricated stainless steel chimneys. In October 2004 Rite-Vent - one of the largest steel chimney producers in Europe - became a part of the Schiedel Group. Together with steel chimney production in Italy and Germany, Schiedel is now one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of steel chimneys in Europe. Our aim is to create modern chimney systems in the most economic and safe way for you as a customer. Our domestic products are distributed in more than 30 countries worldwide, and we also supply to industrial and commercial projects all over the world. For OEM customers we develop branded chimney systems based on specific customer requirements. From 1 April 2005 a new European Harmonised Standard for the construction and installation of flues and chimneys is introduced. This is EN 1856 pt. 1; Performance requirements for metal chimney systems (i.e. twin wall prefabricated chimney systems and liners fitting within an enclosing structure). In mid 2006 EN 1856 pt. 2 for single wall chimneys, metal liners and connecting flue pipe products will be introduced. This will complete the main part of the change to a new harmonised chimney standard. EN 1856 is different from the existing national standards it is replacing in three key ways:- It introduces a user-readable classification system which designates the features of the product. It introduces a requirement for certified product factory control, ensuring that the product you receive is in conformance with the performance designation. This is in addition to any existing ISO 9000 factory quality scheme. It introduces a requirement for manufacturers to make available performance and installation information. In particular the manufacturer will designate the intended use and installation of a product, relating this to the features classified. This will be of particular importance in the light of the intended EU Directive on product liability. Product made, as tested and approved to EN 1856, will be entitled to carry the CE mark. The CE label will carry the designation of the product so that Specifiers, Installers and Control Authorities can readily see that the product and its installation conform to the designated use. A data label will also be required, affixed visibly to the chimney. The CE mark will co-exist with national standards for a period, depending on the local arrangements made concerning regulations for use in each nation state. Nevertheless it is clear that the CE mark, sooner rather than later, will become the universally recognised standard and passport of quality and fitness for purpose. It is inevitable that Specifiers and Control Authorities increasingly will wish to rely only on the CE mark. For the standards so far released, Rite-Vent/Schiedel products have achieved designations suitable for all normal applications, both domestic and commercial. This means that Rite-Vent/Schiedel chimney products can be specified and installed with confidence. 2
Introduction This document is intended to provide guidance in interpretation of the new CE mark and its application to Rite-Vent/Schiedel products. It is aimed at Specifiers, Builders Merchants, Builders, Chimney Installers, Appliance Manufacturers, together with those bodies who control the safe construction and installation of chimneys and flues e.g. building control officers. Background In support of the broader aim of European harmonisation and driven by the Construction Products Directive, a suite of European standards is being developed which provide a common set of requirements for chimneys across Europe. The new European Standard for chimneys EN1856 Parts 1 and 2 has been developed using a different system of chimney classifications to most current national chimney standards. When harmonised European standards are published, the national standard, or part thereof is withdrawn over a period and replaced with the equivalent European standard. The harmonised standards identify the basis for CE marking of products. The New CE Designation and Marking System for Metal Chimneys and Their Components A Typical CE mark will be:- EN 1856: 1 T450 NI W V2 L 500060 G 5O Standard Temperature rating Pressure rating Condensate resistance Corrosion resistance Liner material specification Sootfire resistance Distance to combustibles Additionally, the manufacturer may indicate other information e.g. heat transfer, load bearing, weight etc. 3
Temperature rating: Nominal maximum continuous working temperature ( C). For most applications, T450 is suitable for multifuel. T200 is suitable for gas and oil. Note: To give a comfort margin, the test temperature for these ratings is higher than nominal as follows: Temp Rating T80 T100 T120 T140 T160 T200 T250 T300 T400 T450 T600 Test Temp C 100 120 150 170 190 250 300 350 500 550 700 Pressure rating: Expressed as N for negative pressure applications, P for positive pressure and H for high positive pressure. Maximum allowed leakage rates are as defined below. Leakage rate (1/sec/m 3 ) Test pressure (Pa) NI 2.0 40 P1 0.006 200 P2 0.12 200 H1 0.006 5000 H2 0.12 5000 For most applications, N1 is suitable for conventional negative pressure boiler installations. P1 is required for most positive pressure and fan flued boilers. H is for high pressure applications e.g. diesel generators, when the leakage rate is normally subject to specifier requirement. Condensate resistance: Suitability for wet or dry operation. W designates ability to contain condensate within the flue, i.e. operating in the wet and dry conditions created by condensing appliances. D designates ability to operate under dry conditions only, usually meaning a flue gas temperature high enough to avoid condensate formation. Corrosion resistance class: This is fuel dependent as follows. V1 V2 V3 Vm Tested and approved as resistant to attack from products of combustion from gas. Tested and approved as resistant to attack from products of combustion from light oil (sulphur content up to 0.2%) and natural wood. Tested and approved as resistant to attack from products of combustion from heavy oil (sulphur content >0.2%), solid fuels and peat. Not tested and approved but rating declared by the manufacturer. 4
Liner Material Specification: Two features are specified, firstly a code for the minimum material grade and secondly material thickness: L11 Aluminium 99% pure L20 304 L30 304L L40 316 L50 316L Thickness e.g. 060 means 0.6mm. Normally liners expected to withstand the corrosion effect of multifuel, wood or heavy oil are made with 316L. Light oil is less corrosive and normally 304 has proved adequate in dry conditions, but in the increasingly common wet conditions created by high efficiency boilers, a higher grade is required (316L). Soot fire Resistance Class: Expressed as either G, with soot fire resistance or O, without, followed by the declared minimum distance to combustibles expressed in mm. To obtain the G classification, means that the product has been tested at 1000 C for 30 minutes and remains intact and the temperature of combustible material at the designated distance does not exceed 100 C at T. amb. 20 C. Products with O classification mean the product is not rated as soot fire resistant. Normally this will occur with low temperature applications such as condensing gas boilers, where lip seals are used, which would not withstand a soot fire. Distance to Combustibles: Defined in soot fire resistance above. This definition is easily misunderstood. It has to be read with the soot fire resistance classification and is NOT a stand alone classification. Other Test Criteria covers: Wind load resistance Total height unsupported Maximum distance between supports Compressive strength Max load Weight and dimension of components Resistance factors of fittings and chimney sections. Thermal resistance m 2 k/w Accidental human contact touch temperatures 5
