Model Il-C provides automatic-pneumatic actuation of fixed nozzle fire suppression systems. DescrIPtIon The Model Il-C is comprised of a metal enclosure which contains a spring-loaded puncture pin release mechanism, an actuation cartridge, and an explosion-proof electrical solenoid. Knockouts for the connection of conduit are provided in the top, bottom and sides of the steel enclosure. The enclosure also contains four surface mounting holes. operation When energized by a fire condition, a solenoid mounted on the actuator trips the release mechanism puncturing the cartridge. The solenoid operates approximately 50 milli - seconds after energized. Then actuation gas from the cartridge is directed through piping to pneumatically activate the fire suppression system. Manual actuation is provided by means of an integral STRIKE button at the release enclosure which may be supplemented by use of a remote manual cable pull station.

InstallatIon InstructIons E 62842 6-1-11 Page 2 MountInG ansul automan Il-c release The reliability of an ANSUL fixed nozzle fire suppression system depends greatly upon proper installation of the releasing device, associated equipment and wiring. For example, the ANSUL AUTOMAN Il-C utilizes a special pressure cartridge activating a fire suppression system that must be located in an area where the air temperature will not fall below 32 F (0 C) nor exceed 120 F (49 C). This requirement and other instructions to follow are critical to reliable operation. Install release 1. Select a shock and vibration free surface in a clean dry area for mounting the ANSUL AUTOMAN release. The mounted release should be completely visible and accessible for maintenance. note: The bottom of the release must be located no higher than 50 in. (127 cm) from the floor to enable manual actuation of STRIKE button. If the release cannot be mounted in this manner, a remote manual pull station (cable type or electric) should be installed to facilitate manual actuation. 2. Open the release cover and secure the enclosure at location utilizing the four mounting holes. Use lag screws or toggle bolts depending on the mounting surface. Figure 2 provides detailed mounting data. MountInG Data 3. DO NOT INSTALL CARTRIDGE AT THIS TIME. 4. Connect the release and the extinguishing agent tank(s)/activating mechanism with Schedule 40 or Schedule 80 pipe of 1/4 in. diameter, starting from the gas outlet port in the release as shown in Figure 3. 3/8 IN. InstallatIon InstructIons E 62842 6-1-11 Page 3 WIrInG ansul automan Il-c release The ANSUL AUTOMAN Il-C is designed for use with a separately listed fire detection/control unit which will initiate the electrical signal to operate the release. Accordingly, conduit and wiring connections between the release and the detection/alarm control system suitable for hazardous locations should be made by, or under the supervision, of the detection/control system manufacturer s technician. Installation of Wiring Connect number 18 AWG min. wiring to the solenoid leads and enclose wiring in suitable conduit and fittings for hazardous locations. Adequate room is provided for installation of explosion-proof junction boxes within the ANSUL AUTOMAN Il-C enclosure. DISCONNECT POWER CIRCUIT BEFORE DECOUPLING EXPLOSION PROOF FITTINGS. operating sequence As the normally open/external alarm contacts close, power is applied to solenoid SOL 1 to operate the ANSUL AUTOMAN Il-C. As the release operates, the gas cartridge is punctured allowing actuation gas to pneumatically operate a fire suppression system. note: The solenoid is a continuous duty type and there is no internal switch to remove the solenoid power. If it is desirable to remove power, a pneumatic pressure switch or time delay relay which is approved for hazardous locations should be used. ANSUL AUTOMAN Il-C FOR HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS, PART NO. InstallatIon InstructIons E 62842 6-1-11 Page 4 test of WIrInG Electrical tests should be conducted jointly by the installer and the technical representatives of both the detection/alarm control system and the fire suppression system manufacturers. 1. Raise the release manual reset lever up to the armed position. DO NOT INSTALL CARTRIDGE. ARMED FIRED FIGure 6 001803 2. Energize the detector/alarm control system. 3. Activate a detector in accordance with procedures as recommended by the detector/alarm control system manufacturer. Check that the ANSUL AUTOMAN release has operated reset lever should be in the down (Fired) position as illustrated in Figure 6. RESET LEVER RING PIN FIGure 7 001801 4. Return detector/alarm control system to normal supervisory operation, reset the ANSUL AUTOMAN release and install ring pin as illustrated in Figure 7 to safety the release puncture pin mechanism. test activation of extinguisher(s) Depending upon the hazard s requirements, the activation system design for the agent tank assembly will differ. For this reason, the operational test of the actuation/activation system must be performed by an authorized ANSUL distributor. 1. Refer to the installation, operation and maintenance instruction manual(s) furnished with the ANSUL Fire Suppression System and prepare the agent tank assembly activation mechanism for test firing. note: Precise execution of each step is necessary to avoid discharge of the agent. 2. Check ANSUL AUTOMAN release reset lever should be in the (Armed) position and ring pin inserted in the puncture pin assembly shaft. 3. Weigh and install the proper cartridge in the release. Hand tighten. note: Be certain when replacing cartridges that the proper type is used, and that it meets the weight requirements outlined in the instruction manual for that type of system. The pressure relief device in the actuation line may be either the actuation line vent (which relieves automatically) or the pressure relief valve (pull ring to effect total pressure relief). 4. Pull ring pin, close and lock the release cover. 5. Operate the release by depressing the STRIKE button. 6. Confirm that the detector/alarm control system performed all of its associated functions and that the agent tank assembly activation system functioned properly. 7. Leak test the pneumatic pipe and fittings between the release and agent tank assembly. 8. Verify that the actuation pressure has been fully relieved. If your system has a relief valve in the actuation line, pull the ring to release pressure. If your system has an actuation line vent plug, the pressure will be relieved automatically. 9. Restore the agent tank(s) activation mechanism to operation. 10. Rearm release and insert ring pin. 11. Replace spent cartridge with fully-charged cartridge. 12. Remove ring pin, close cover. 13. Insert ring pin in STRIKE button and attach lead and wire seal. MaIntenance ANSUL AUTOMAN Il-C release is a mechanical device. It requires periodic care. Maintenance to provide maximum assurance that your release will operate effectively and safely should be conducted at six month intervals in accordance with Steps 1 through 13 listed under Test Activation Of Extinguisher(s). Inspection to provide reasonable assurance that your release is charged and operable should be conducted at more frequent intervals by visually determining that the ring pin is properly inserted and sealed in the STRIKE button and that the reset lever is in the up (Armed) position. note: Every ANSUL engineered fixed nozzle system is subject to a mandatory inspection upon completion of your system s installation. This inspection must be performed by an authorized ANSUL distributor to ensure that the complete system is installed properly and is ready for service.
