ZERO WASTE PALO ALTO Palo Alto has a goal of Zero Waste to landfills by 2021. Zero Waste goes beyond recycling by taking a whole systems approach to managing the flow of resources through society. It emulates natural systems, where all outputs are an input for another process. To achieve this goal, the entire community will need to work together and play an active role. The diagram below illustrates components of a Zero Waste System. For more information on how you can help make Zero Waste happen, please visit www.cityofpaloalto.org/zerowaste Collection Services Recyclables Community Collaboration Communities create and implement policies that are environmentally-preferable, economically viable and socially equitable over wasteful, polluting and ultimately costly practices. Jobs from Design & Discards New jobs are created from the collection, transportation and processing of discarded materials, and also in the creation of new products from those materials. These new jobs help communities sustain a vibrant local economy. Incentives Creating financial incentives for clean and sustainable enterprises. Design Waste Out Products and packaging are designed and created to minimize waste, and be less toxic, durable, reusable and recyclable/compostable. Foster Sustainable & Green Businesses Company operations avoid or reduce greenhouse gas emissions; minimize resource use; keep air, land, and water clean and safe; and maximize product reuse and recycling. Retailer Take-Back Programs Wholesalers and retailers are active partners with manufacturers in offering convenient product takeback for reuse, disassembly and recycling, marketing environmentally sound products, and creating product leasing strategies. Compostables Garbage & Annual Clean-Up Hazardous Waste Local Resources for Reuse & Recycling Zero Waste communities invest in reuse, recycling and composting facilities to make participation convenient, instead of investing in landfills or incinerators. Producer Responsibility Producers are responsible for the financial and physical management of their product throughout its life cycle by working with their supply and distribution chains, resulting in product redesign to facilitate reuse, recycling and recovery. Empowered Consumer Consumers select products based on environmental performance, price and quality, and participate in reuse and recycling programs. Debris Boxes Contacts & FAQs
