September Meeting Photos Upcoming Events October 22-23, 2016 Gainesville Orchid Society Show Orchids in the Garden, Kanapaha Botanical Gardens,4700 SW 58th Dr., Gainesville, Fl October 28-30, 2016 Delray Beach Orchid Society Show Orchid Obsession, Old Square Gymnasium, 51 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach, Fl ****************************************** Steve Arthur s Cypress Mulch Recipe for Potting Orchids (Orchids only need to be repotted every 5-6 years with this inexpensive mixture according to Steve Arthur.) For cattleyas: 3/4 cypress mulch mixed with 1/4 sponge rock (also called perlite) Wet the perlite before mixing with the mulch. Leave the cattleya roots at least 4 inches long. Pack the cattleya & mulch tightly in well draining pots. Water thoroughly & then water only when the mulch has dried out. (About every 3 weeks according to Steve Arthur). For Phals: Do the same as for cattleyas but mix 1/3 charcoal, 1/3 cypress mulch & 1/3 sponge rock for the mixture. For Paphiopedilums: Add some chopped spaghum moss to the cattleya recipe. (NOTE: Rinse the dust off the sponge rock & charcoal before using.) You can use a coco liner as a pot. After you put the orchid in the coco liner, pack it tight with the cypress mulch recipe & sew it together with 20 lb. fishing line to make a round ball. Then the orchid can be hung in a tree.
