ABOUT THE HUNTINGTON the huntington library, art collections, and botanical gardens is a world renowned, collections based research and education center converged on 120 acres of breathtaking gardens. originally the private estate of railroad magnate henry edwards huntington, today it is one of southern california s must see destinations for its magnificent collections of rare books and manuscripts, and priceless works of american and european art. our mission is to promote research and education in the arts, humanities, and botanical sciences through the growth and preservation of the collections, through the development and support of a community of scholars, and through the display of our extraordinary resources to diverse audiences. each year, the huntington attracts over 750,000 visitors. the library hosts some 1,700 scholars from around the world to conduct research. a monthly free day attracts 50,000 visitors annually, and includes many who could not otherwise afford to visit. more than 20,000 students from southern california schools participate in our education programs each year, which are made available to educators without charge. these programs, which include tours, classes, and workshops, are developed by professional museum educators and conducted by a corps of nearly 1,200 trained volunteer docents. one of the most popular gardens is an exquisite chinese garden, the garden of flowing fragrance, the largest of its kind outside of china. it features a complex of traditional pavilions and bridges surrounding a lake. the fiveacre first phase of the chinese garden was completed in 2008. a rockery, boat pavilion, and a lake-side stage opened to the public in march 2014, with efforts currently underway to raise the remaining $8 million needed to complete phase ii, which includes a star-gazing tower, flowery brush studio, among other structures.
