MARKET ACCESS SOLUTIONS FOR INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY International Safety Certification Services

UL is a premier global independent safety science company with over 120 years of expertise in standards development, testing and certification. Today, UL offers a comprehensive range of services to help manufacturers across all industries gain the compliance credentials they need to compete in the global marketplace. UL and the Society of Machinery Safety, Japan The Society of Machinery Safety, Japan (JAMAS) was founded in 2010 to develop and promote machinery safety technology, reduce incidents and enhance the prestige of Japanese industries. UL Japan supports JAMAS by co-hosting seminars to promote their shared public safety mission. PIONEERING SAFETY THROUGH SCIENCE Empowering machines to access global markets UL s international family of companies boasts a global network of laboratory, testing, and certification facilities, with proven research expertise covering a wide range of industrial machinery, from food-processing and printing machines to lathes and other machine tools. Machinery safety evaluation services powered by UL cut through the complexity of international regulatory demands verifying compliance to machinery safety directives in Europe, North America and other world markets. For manufacturers with their sights on Europe, our experts provide valuable support in producing effective declarations of conformity (DoCs) to the Machinery Directive and the EMC Directive. UL s global network of field evaluation experts can help manufacturers receive approval of their product installations abroad, providing local access to standards expertise whether for North America or any global market. 2 3

Machinery Directive The Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) requires machines used within the European Union to be evaluated and tested to applicable standards. The Directive lists Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSR) and applies to products entering the EU for the first time. Once conformity is established, it is valid for all EU markets. EMC Directive The Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (2004/108/EC) regulates the compatibility of electric devices and installations. The Directive limits electromagnetic emissions to ensure that new devices will not disturb radio, telecommunications or other equipment. It also governs the new equipment s resistance to such interference. CE Mark The CE mark is a manufacturer s declaration that a product conforms to all applicable directives, such as those above and the Low-Voltage Directive. UL has the expertise to determine which directives apply for your product, and can support you with testing, evaluation and Notified Body services to help validating your Declaration of Conformity and application of the CE Mark. Overview of services UL s well-established expertise in product assessment provides manufacturers with deep insight into their specific challenges, thus enabling them to reach conformity to the applicable machinery safety standards and directives. Our experts assist you in every step: Advisory services helping customers to understand and meet machinery safety standards and directives Review and verification of initial documentation Preliminary investigation for early detection of compliance issues Conformance assessment for product DoCs: Assessment of conformity to Annex I of the Machinery Directive and report preparation Risk assessment support Assessment of conformity to safety standards including EN 60241 Testing or construction review for compliance to safety standards (e.g. EN 60241) Assessment of conformity to EMC requirements Issuing of reports Drafting of DoC to the Machinery Directive Drafting of Technical Construction File (TCF) If you want to further leverage your benefits with UL by entering several markets, ask us about Global Market Access. MACHINERY AND EMC DIRECTIVES FOR CE MARKING UL helps manufacturers demonstrate conformity to the Machinery Directive and the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive, so they can apply the CE Mark on their product and gain access to European markets. 4 5

field evaluation services Many international requirements (such as OSHA in the U.S.) mandate that all electrical equipment in the workplace be certified or subjected to a complete and thorough evaluation before use. This requirement also applies to machinery. Take advantage of UL s experience and geographic coverage to meet your needs and fulfill the requirements of Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) in your target markets Comment Dennis Butcher This double page seems a bit to UL to me there are no AHJ s in the EU (it s a US term!). maybe on site evaluation and re-written to support Mach. Directive evaluations, not UL/AHJ s? If a product s certification is not acceptable to an AHJ, owner or other regulatory body, UL field evaluation services can determine whether a specific installation conforms to the applicable safety standards, so that a UL Field Evaluated Product Label can be applied to the product. If a product does not meet any requirements, UL staff will provide a detailed preliminary findings report citing each issue with references to applicable standards. Thereafter, UL will work with you bring the product into compliance. Our qualified UL experts can: Conduct documentation reviews Conduct visual and mechanical inspections Review suitability of installation in accordance with: Assessment of conformity to Annex I of the Machinery Directive and report preparation Risk assessment support Assessment of conformity to safety standards including EN 60241 Testing or construction review for compliance to safety standards (e.g. EN 60241) Assessment of conformity to EMC requirements Issuing of reports Drafting of DoC to the Machinery Directive Drafting of Technical Construction File (TCF) Perform applicable testing Write an engineering report If needed, our field evaluators can be on-site on the next working day. We coordinate with you and the local Authority Having Jurisdiction to meet your deadlines. 8 9

Comment Dennis Butcher SEMI is not related to CE Marking so it appears irrelevant in this brochure (I would welcome engagement re. SEMI, as Ctech are looking at providing EMC testing to support SEMI F47 requirements it s a new area for us and we would like to know what we should be looking at for SEMI currently, we re just looking at PSU s) SEMI guidelines and standards Success in the semiconductor equipment market depends on whether products conform to leading industry standards and guidelines. SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International) is a global organization with members from all key sectors of the semiconductor industry. The EHS (environmental health and safety) committee within SEMI s International Standards division develops standards and guidelines that are accepted worldwide. The standards help ensure state-of-the-art process equipment safety for an industry that demands quality products. UL can certify compliance to SEMI s flagship guideline SEMI S2, Safety Guidelines for Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment, as well as SEMI S8, Safety Guidelines for Ergonomics Engineering of Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment, and SEMI S14, Safety Guidelines for Fire Risk Assessment and Mitigation for Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment. Compliance to SEMI S2, S8 and S14 is increasingly appearing on purchase orders and engineering specifications. Producers of semiconductor manufacturing equipment can benefit from the stature gained through SEMI certification an important indicator of safety and reliability for their customers, the semiconductor manufacturers. UL staff has the expertise to: Step 1 Step 2 Step 3 (Here would be good to add a list of the steps UL experts take to help customers get this certification, similar to the previous pages) Is there a mark demonstrating compliance to SEMI standards? 10 11
