Design Collection 2017
From the Vad archives
VAD is a Norwegian furniture producer that has evolved from hand work traditions on the West coast of Norway five generations ago. When production started in the 1870s, it was based on household items like spinning wheels, looms and many other useful items. Several of these products got prizes for outstanding quality and design. In 1968, Oddmund Vad, changed the focus from hand craft production into modern furniture products. For the time to come, several ground-breaking furniture models was brought to market, including some of his personal designs, like the lounge chair Convair. The passion and dreams for the furniture industry has prevailed in the family business, and in 2005 his son, Håkon Vad, started to work on bringing new Norwegian furniture designs to the market. For the last 15 years, the main focus for VAD has been on the contract market in Scandinavia. As several products have an appeal to customers outside our domestic market, we have recent years participated at several international shows like Salone del Mobile (Milan, Italy), IMM (Cologne, Germany), SFF (Stockholm, Sweden), IDS (Toronto, Canada), and ICFF (New York, USA). From the Vad archives With a keen eye on design, high quality and sustainability, the products shall differ in function, form, comfort or other important aspects according to the needs and requirements of the users. Five generations of passionate craftsmanship shall provide a difference for our customers. 4 5
CONVAIR 6 7
CONVAIR Oddmund Vad Designer Oddmund Vad was the 4 th generation that changed the course of the family business from handcraft to attractive furniture designs, first nationally, and later with international success. The traces of his endeavors are acknowledged like a sincere definition of the Nordic spirit of freedom, tenacity and discipline. The Convair chair concept was created to bring out two main aspects; the infinity sense given by circles, and rounded progressive lines with a flow that never ends. The wooden rings of Convair fulfill this connotation evoking infinity and nature as a part of its identity. Convair was launched in 1973, and received good acceptance for its ground breaking design and style. It is a unique design product, making it a one off a kind piece of furniture. Convair was sold on five continents for a decade, and is now brought back to the market. Convair was inspired by the observation of the multiple circles contained in a paper roll. These lines emerge from nature like the veins in the trunk of the trees. He is one of the three founding members of Klubben and works actively with exhibitions, curation and consulting. He is a trained craftsman and educated designer from both Bergen National Academy of Art and Design and Aalto University. He focuses on creating products that feel natural to the user and where inherent qualities of the materials and production techniques are emphasized. Sofa system Sverre Uhnger Designer The Lean sofa system is based on 1, 2 and 3-seater divan that can be delivered with backrest and armrests, in addition to corner elements and tray tables. This opens exciting possibilities to furnish in groups, rows and corner combinations. The initial idea behind Lean was to create a modular system with clean lines and a light expression. By elevating the back and armrests and make them seemingly float above the seat the collection gets the desired lightness and defining character. The contrasting wooden legs connect the elements in an intuitive and elegant way. The profile of the seat and back is rounded to enhance comfort and at the same time accentuates the shape and identity of the sofa. Tray table Seating height: 45 cm 12 13
PIVOT 14 15
PIVOT Designers Sigurd Strøm and Torstein Nilsen are both inspired by smart angles, space, functionality and clean geometry. As professors at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, their work and pedagogical approach are based on conceptual thinking through practice. They focused on how to use geometry, not just as a process-orientated tool but also as a fundamental structure, to design a self-explanatory modular system. Today, the Pivot series consists of more than 60 seating elements, but this became natural once having a simple starting point, that allows further development using the flexibility and potential of its concept. Sofa system Pivot was inspired from the logic that derives from cobblestones and the careful observation into how they stack on each other and the discovery of the fact that they are not only squares or rectangles forming a wall. But that they are also defined by all kinds of different shapes, and despite of its discrepancies, all the elements are always matching perfectly into the structure of the whole. Leaving no pieces lose or gaps in between, but the presence of harmony. Torstein Nilsen Designer MNIL Tables For complete inspiration and selection, see www.vad.no/en Seating height: 45 cm 16 17
