Definition An active assailant is an individual who is armed with a weapon and is actively engaged in harming someone. In many cases, with active assailants there is no pattern or method to selection of victims. Active assailant situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. 1

Active Assailant 1. How would you react to an angry person? Remain calm, lower your voice and use active listening. Use your CPI skills if you ve had this training 2. What are the signs of escalating behavior? Yelling, demanding behavior, finger tapping, impatience, fidgeting 3. What should the valet have done? Alert Security immediately 5. Who should the receptionist alert? Push Panic Button Call Security *1, Alert staff in potential area, Give description of individual Remain calm, lower voice and listen 3
Active Assailant 1. Faced with a situation, with a highly agitated visitor, how would you respond? Remain calm, discretely Alert Security *1, Code Purple, Push panic button if available. If you are witnessing this event, use *1 2. Who would you alert? Security, * 1, Staff in immediate area. 3. What should staff do when they hear a similar commotion with an agitated visitor? If possible, discreetly call Security, *1 Get involved and support your co-worker, 4. How would you react when a weapon is displayed? Remain calm. Press panic button. When safe to do so: dial *1 Code Silver, Press, Use Live Safe, or Call 911 Get out if at all possible and as soon as possible. 4

Staff Action 1. What was staff doing in the video? 1. Lock Down Locking themselves in secure location Turned off lights Silencing phones/beepers 2. Move patients our of dangerous and barricade themselves in rooms Use beds, or heavy furniture to block entry Turn off lights and remain silent Know your safe areas Break rooms Supply rooms Medication rooms with access controls Bathrooms that are locked from the inside Grab items (fire extinguisher, small chair, etc.) that can be used as a weapon or distraction 6
Summary 1. Get Out Attempt to evacuate the premises regardless of whether others agree to follow KNOW YOUR EXIT ROUTES Leave personal belongings behind Help others escape-especially disabled or elderly 2. Hide Out 1. Find a place to hide where assailant is less likely to find you 2. Seek shelter in a locked room 3. Barricade door with heavy item 4. Hide behind these items 5. Move others to areas with locking room or shut and barricade patient rooms 6. Evacuate only when instructed to do so by Security or Police 7
Summary 3. Call Out Location of incident # of perpetrators, victims or hostages Describe what is happening Size and type of weapon Keep phone line open for responders to listen to Don t hang up 4. Take Out-As an absolute last resort Attempt to disrupt active assailant by: Acting aggressively towards him Working together Throwing items and improvising weapons (fire extinguisher) COMMIT TO YOUR ACTION 8
When the Police Arrive Remain calm and follow their instructions Police may shout instructions and push people to the ground Put down any items in your hands Keep you hands visible at all times Don t make quick movements Don t interfere with the police 9
