Structure. GI and Natural England. Technical development of GI in the NW since 2003. Natural Economy NW project. GI activity in the NW.

GI and Natural England.

Natural England Our Remit. Created NERC Act Oct 2006. Here to conserve and enhance the natural environment, for its intrinsic value, the wellbeing and enjoyment of people and the economic prosperity that it brings. We work for

A healthy Natural Environment. The natural environment has intrinsic value. Landscapes and wildlife enrich people s lives. Healthy ecosystems supply natural services for economic prosperity.

People value and conserve the natural environment. Everyone should have opportunity to enjoy. People engage with and understand the natural environment. People and communities take action for the natural environment.

Sustainable use of the natural environment. Our use land, freshwaters and the seas does not compromise the natural environment. Change and development occurs in ways that protect and enhance the natural environment.

A secure environmental future. Understanding complex factors that change the environment. Developing evidence, information and monitoring. Set vision and engage people in debate about our future.

The role of GI for Natural England. GI is cross cutting, helps with all 4 outcomes. A Spatial Planning approach helping to deliver more sustainable places. Supporting people and the economy through the pursuit of Natural Value.

Natural England Guidance our latest position on green infrastructure. Launched at the ParkCity conference London 2009. Sets out Natural England s current understanding of GI and our remit. Explores the functions and benefits of GI planning. Looks at how GI can be delivered through a variety of plans and strategies.

Green Infrastructure for Natural Value NE - Five Key Areas of Interest. Natural Place. Natural Health Service. Natural Connections. Natural Development. Natural Resilience.

Natural Economy NW Project.

Natural Economy NW Natural Economy NW project (NWDA, NE and Sita completed Dec 09). Investigated the economic benefits of GI. The case for investment. Role of GI in sustainable economic growth in the NW.

Natural Economy - Natural Value. Healthy Natural Environment is Indispensible to economic prosperity. An efficient and effective way to deliver multiple benefits to society. Derived from investment in green infrastructure and ecosystem services. Central to sustainable economic growth.

Sustainable Economic Growth Economic growth that can be sustained and is within environmental limits but also enhances the environment and social welfare, and limits greater extremes in future economic cycles. Prosperous Places, No 2008 p15. Dept for Business, Enterprise and regulatory reform.

Current Statement of Accounts An environmental credit crunch. Society has been borrowing on the basis of an ecosystem goods and services futures market the environment shall provide. But demands on the environment threaten it s asset value... Mouth of the Weaver project - 2005

GI Activity in the NW.

NW Application Regional Policy - NW GI Prospectus. 1 proposal GI is critical infrastructure for sustainable development. 5 Priorities (1 economic competitiveness, 2 healthy communities, 3 climate change, 4 food and fuel security, 5 protection and repair of landscapes, biodiversity and ecosystem services) 4 Places (Areas of major change, opportunity, regeneration and development, areas of environmental deficit).

NW Application Sub-Regional Frameworks. Cumbria limited framework Coastal zone and ecosystem services case study. Lancashire published Nov 09. Greater Manchester Outline Oct 08, further work into 2010. Merseyside Draft due Apr 2010. Cheshire begins 2010.

NW Application LDF level. EM3 reflect in LDF Locally specific. Sub-Regional Frameworks to provide basic structure and allow cross border consideration. Spatial framework within the LDF. Role of GI in delivering broader LDF objectives.

NW Application Regeneration Liverpool Knowledge Quarter. Liverpool City Centre. 2 universities. 1 Teaching Hospital 2 Cathedrals. Masterplan - Ensuring that we offer an inspiring and convivial place for the exchange and development of ideas set within a high quality and distinctive public realm, underpinned by strong cultural, leisure and other quality of life assets. 14,000 people 15% Liverpool GVA

The Liverpool Knowledge Quarter. Prospectus Regeneris 2007 Urban Design and Public Realm Framework Urbed 2008. NENW Case Study 2009. Appendix - GI planning in city centre regeneration zone (Urbed/Mersey Forest 2010). The aim of this Appendix is to build on the Knowledge Quarter Prospectus (Regeneris, 2007) and Urban Design and Public Realm Framework (URBED, 2008) to show how planning for Green Infrastructure can further partners goals for academic, economic, social and environmental improvement.

Initial GI review of the Climax plan. Suggested 4 key benefits of GI: Improving image and spaces for social leisure and learning. A setting for staff, students, patients and visitors. Health benefits hospital recuperation. Developing a Learning Landscape test bed for research.

LKQ Design Principles. Design Principles Urban design vitality safe permeable routes, GI contributes to urban design. Comfort Zone for Urban life plants and water provide shelter, protection, health support. Maximise biodiversity. Ecological solutions to engineering problems (eg: climate change). Connecting with nature a positive area experience.

GI The Challenge - Changing the 4 behaviours. Communication building awareness and support. Planning developing better tools, embed in policy and plans. Investment understanding and valuing the benefits. Delivery more, better faster getting it used, getting people engaged. All photographs Copy right, Martin Moss unless otherwise stated
