We were among the early leaders to launch factory energy reduction goals in 1988, and expanded to broader global environment, health and safety metrics in 1997. Design for Sustainability We apply a rigorous, formal review during our product development process to minimize the environmental footprint of our products while maximizing environmental technologies. We invest research and development resources to advance energy efficiency, ozone protection and low global warming technologies in our products. Acoustics and vibration tests being conducted by Peter Bushnell, an engineering fellow, in Syracuse, N.Y. Geraud Darnis, president and CEO, UTC Climate, Controls & Security, provides the plenary address at the U.S. Green Building Council s Annual Greenbuild International Summit. Founding the Movement We are the only company in the world to be a founding member of the U.S., Argentina, China, India, Singapore and France Green Building Councils. In fact, Carrier was instrumental in launching the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1993 and was the first company in the world to join the organization. Leading LEED Education In 2010, we became the first company to license USGBC s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED ) curriculum to train our employees and customers in sustainable building solutions. We are now one of the USGBC s largest global partners for LEED education. Carrier s global educational initiative has trained thousands of industry professionals around the world in regions such as Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and the United States. Global Research for Global Dialogue Carrier trains industry professionals in the Middle East. In 2012, United Technologies partnered with McGraw-Hill Construction to conduct a study on world green building trends. The study confirmed that the green building movement has shifted from a niche market to a long-term business opportunity. services products and services and Carrier Transicold PrimeLINE Units: First in Recyclability The PrimeLine unit from Carrier Transicold achieved a new distinction in sustainability, becoming the first container refrigeration system with a UL Environment validation for recyclability. As vaildated by UL Environment using its Environmental Claims Vaildation Procedure 2789, the PrimeLINE unit is 93 percent recyclable. NORESCO Implements Energy Savings Performance Contract NORESCO is partnering with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to implement $15 million in self-funding facility upgrades at three Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLA) centers, including West Los Angeles Medical Center, Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center and Los Angeles Ambulatory Care Center. About two-thirds of the project s energy savings will come from improving heating, ventilation and air conditioning efficiency in West Los Angeles Medical Center s main hospital and radiation therapy buildings. PNC Tower: Planned to be the World s Greenest Skyscraper Automated Logic (ALC) has been selected by PNC Financial Services Group to provide the building automation system (BAS) for The Tower at PNC Plaza, a 32-story, 781,000 sq. ft. office building in downtown Pittsburgh. The building is expected to surpass Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED ) Platinum, the U.S. Green Building Council s (USGBC ) highest rating. The project will utilize the WebCTRL BAS to integrate with third-party systems, including lighting, fire alarm systems and indoor environmental monitoring. The system will ensure a comfortable environment for the building s occupants and will contribute to PNC s LEED Platinum certification. 6 Tokio Marine Centre: Best Chiller Plant Performance in Singapore Carrier and its innovative Evergreen 23XRV tri-rotor screw chiller contributed to Tokio Marine Insurance Singapore achieving a system efficiency of 0.508 ikw/rt (input kw per refrigerant ton) at its new building in Singapore. Input kilowatt per refrigerant ton is a commonly used measure of energy efficiency in a central commercial air conditioning system. This efficiency is 22 percent better than the 0.65 ikw/rt Singapore Building and Construction Authority (BCA) Green Mark GoldPlus standard.

Marioff s HI-FOG gas-driven pump unit uses up to 90% less water than traditional sprinkler systems. The Vector unit features electric standby capability with fuel, noise and emission reductions for trailer refrigeration. Fenwal Protection Systems use non-ozone depleting suppression agents with a low global warming potential of 1. The CO 2 OLtec Integral solution uses the natural refrigerant CO 2 and fully integrates refrigeration, heating and cooling systems, resulting in energy savings. Interlogix s Two-Way Talking Security Touch Screen uses time triggers to help users manage energy consumption. The Infinity Hybrid Heat system with Greenspeed intelligence is the most efficient ducted, air source dual fuel system available. * The Fireye Nexus PPC4000 control system reduces boiler fuel demand by up to 7% versus mechanical systems. The Evergreen 23XRV with Foxfire compression technology is the world s leading efficiency screw chiller, 44% better than industry standard. Our comprehensive environment, health and safety (EHS) program establishes the framework and provides tools for implementing our EHS practices into our business and culture. We continuously measure and report our performance toward our sustainability goals, which include targeted reductions for greenhouse emissions, water consumption and industrial waste generation and promote employee safety. Beyond our operations, we extend our environment, health and safety commitment to our suppliers. Our global supplier EHS initiative is focused on ensuring that 100% of all critical suppliers meet our expectations, which include safe working conditions for all employees and minimizing impact to the environment. Through 2012, UTC Climate, Controls & Security accomplishments included: 36 % reduction in water consumption 42 % reduction in greenhouse gas emissions 48 % reduction in total industrial process waste 68 % reduction in air emissions Baseline: 2006 data adjusted for acquisitions and divestitures Since 2008, we have applied the U.S. Green Building Council s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED ) rating system in the design of all new properties. 8
Taking the LEED in green factories In 2011, our UT Electronic Controls plant became the first electronics manufacturing facility to earn the U.S. Green Building Council s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED ) Gold certification under the LEED for Existing Buildings rating system. That same year, Carrier s Monterrey, Mexico, commercial plant was the first industrial facility in the global heating, ventilation and air-conditioning industry to be LEED Gold certified. Our commitment to green building also extends to our offices. Carrier s Shanghai offices were awarded LEED Silver in 2010 and Carrier s Beijing offices were awarded LEED Gold in 2009. We were among the early pioneers that applied the LEED rating system to factory operations. In 2009, Carrier factories in Charlotte, N.C., and Huntington, Ind., became only the 10th and 11th in the world at that time to receive the USGBC s LEED green building rating for existing buildings. A better world at work Employees at our Kidde facility in Matamoros, Mexico, found new ways to recycle resources such as aluminum, plastic and wood pallets during the manufacture of fire extinguishers, diverting them from landfills. In addition, an electric oven used at the facility was placed in an enclosure to reduce the heat load transferred to adjacent areas. This resulted in lower energy demands for air conditioning and improved air quality in the facility. Since 2008, the facility has succeeded in reducing non-recycled waste by 96%, industrial process waste by 76% and greenhouse gas emissions by 24%. 9
ers leadership Our commitment to sustainability reaches well beyond our walls to the communities we call home and the customers we support. At UTC Climate, Controls & Security, through education and community engagement, we promote a safer and greener built environment. In 2012, UTC Climate, Controls & Security donated $3.5 million in cash, equipment and services to non-profit and charitable organizations. Since 1994, we have sponsored more than 135 Habitat for Humanity homes worldwide. 10 Operation Save A Life, a partnership between Kidde, ABC-TV, local corporate sponsors and local fire professionals, is a community-based public education program to raise awareness of fire and carbon monoxide dangers. The program reaches more than 70 million people and has been credited with contributing to the decrease in fire deaths in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. Through this program, Kidde has donated almost 1 million smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to communities since 2002.
UTC Climate, Controls & Security s Green Shoots program is a community outreach initiative that focuses on promoting sustainability for early education students. Employee volunteers teach interactive science and health classes to enhance environmental stewardship and healthy living habits. Since 2011, more than 1,000 employee volunteers have established the Green Shoots program in rural primary schools throughout mainland China, India, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, benefiting more than 6,000 children. UTC Climate, Controls & Security employees volunteer for the Green Shoots program in Guangxi, China. Launched in 2011, Carrier s Distinguished Sustainability Lecture Series is a collaborative program with international universities and communities. The series is designed to convene sustainability thought leaders and international building industry experts to transform the built environment. Carrier s Distinguished Sustainability Lecture Series delivered in Singapore. United Technologies Corp. (UTC) is a founding sponsor of the U.S. Green Building Council s Center for Green Schools. The center is working to transform U.S. schools to make them better for the environment, less expensive to operate, and healthier places to learn and work. During 2012, two UTC Center for Green Schools fellows launched initiatives at schools in Boston and Sacramento, Calif., including single-stream recycling programs, energy efficiency audits and school building improvements. UTC s support also enabled a volunteer network to commit more than 742,000 hours of service in 2012. 11
Measuring avoided greenhouse gas emissions from Carrier products and services since 2000 The Carrier CO 2 NSERVATION Meter calculates avoided greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as a result of the installation of highefficiency Carrier air conditioning, heating and refrigeration systems by customers around the world since 2000, and from NORESCO, an energy services business of UTC Climate, Controls & Security, since 2008. In 2012, the Carrier CO 2 NSERVATION Meter reached 125 million metric tons of greenhouse gases saved, equivalent to removing more than 26 million cars off the road for one year. Buildings in the United States alone consume approximately 40 percent of all energy, and within buildings, heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems account for approximately 35 percent of energy use. UTC Climate, Controls & Security has consistently invested in energy-efficient technologies and solutions to assist its customers in lowering that energy demand and GHG emissions.
