SANS 941 Willa Breed Click to add title Programme Manager Electrotechnical Standards Presentation at SABS Convention 2012

SANS 941 Energy Efficiency of Electrical and Electronic Apparatus What does SANS 941 require?

Introduction Energy Efficiency program for domestic appliances: Energy efficiency standards Energy labels Incentive schemes Procurement programs Information and awareness raising programs

Energy Efficiency Standards Well-defined protocols (or laboratory test procedures) for accurate estimate of energy performance Target limits on energy performance based on specified test protocols

Types of Energy Efficiency Standards Prescriptive standards Require that a particular feature or device be fitted or installed in all new products Minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) Prescribe minimum efficiency levels or maximum energy consumption that appliances/equipment must achieve Class average standards Specify the average efficiency of a manufactured product allowing each manufacturer to select the level of efficiency for each model so that overall average is met

Test Standards Test methodologies/procedures Appliance performance Appliance energy consumption Appliance Efficiency classes Enable appliances/equipment to be compared on a fair basis

Energy Labels Comparative energy labels Informs the consumer that the product meets the required standard or eligibility criteria Allow consumers to compare and form a jugdement on energy performance among similar products using Discrete categories of performance Continuous scale Endorsement labels These are seals of approval given according to a specified criteria Energy labels can stand alone or complement energy standards

Energy label (Example)

SANS 941 Formulate performance test standards and appliance energy labels Appliance passive standby power requirements Follow the European system for performance standards and labelling Add the European directives for appliance labelling as National annexes to the respective performance standards Harmonisation was key

Scope Air-conditioners, not exceeding 5 kw, and of the non-ducted type, and heat pumps; Audio and video equipment, including video recording equipment, set top boxes (STB s), audio equipment and multifunction equipment for consumer use. Television sets that include, but are not limited to, those with CRT, LCD, PDP or projection technologies; Dishwashers (water consumption is also covered); Electric lamps; Electric ovens; Refrigerators and freezers; Tumble dryers; Washer dryer combinations; and Washing machines (water consumption is also covered)

Normative references SANS 50229/EN 50229, Electric clothes washer-dryers for household use: Methods of measuring the performance SANS 50242/EN 50242, Electric dishwashers for household use: Methods of measuring the performance SANS 50285/EN 50285, Energy efficiency of electric lamps for household use : Measurement methods SANS 50304/EN 50304, Electric ovens for household use: Methods for measuring the energy consumption SANS 54511-3/EN 14511-3, Air conditioners, liquid chilling packages and heat pumps with electrically driven compressors for space heating and cooling Part 3: Test methods SANS 60081/IEC 60081, Double-capped fluorescent lamps: Performance specifications SANS 60456/IEC 60456, Clothes washing machines for household use: Methods for measuring the performance

Normative references (cont.) SANS 60901/IEC 60901, Single-capped fluorescent lamps: Performance specifications SANS 60969/IEC 60969, Self-ballasted lamps for general lighting services: Performance requirements SANS 61121/IEC 61121,Tumble dryers for household use : Methods for measuring the performance SANS 62087/IEC 62087, Methods of measurement of the power consumption of audio, video and related equipment SANS 62301/IEC 62301, Household electrical appliances : Measurement of standby power SANS 62552/IEC 62552, Household refrigerating appliances: Characteristics and test methods.

Requirements General requirements Power factor : at least 0.85 Standby power : not more than 1Watt Energy Label Specific requirements specify for each appliance the: Standard to be used in the determination of energy performance National annex for the label

Methods of Test General conditions of testing Ambient temperature Test Voltage Measuring instruments Power factor test Power factor is the ratio of real power(kw) to apparent power(kva)
