CITY OF UMATILLA AGENDA COVER SHEET DATE: May 28, 2013 MEETING DATE: June 4, 2013 SUBJECT: Fire Department Surplus Goods ISSUES: Fire Gear and Hose sections that are out of service because of age or degradation BACKGROUND SUMMARY: The attached list of fire gear has been inspected and is no longer in service due to degradation or meeting its ten (10) year life span. Fire Chief Mike Vitta asks the Council to review the inventory and declare these items surplus. There are a total of three (3) coats, five (5) pairs of pants, and six (6) helmets. We respectfully request that upon approval of being declared surplus, the gear be donated to the South Trail Fire Rescue Explorer Post 5531 in Fort Myers. The gear can still be used for training by these future firefighters. The recipient will pick up the gear if it is declared surplus so there will be no shipping charges involved in this donation. There is a list of fire hose that has failed annual testing and can no longer be utilized by the Fire Department for fire attack or supply. The request is to have these sections of hose declared surplus so the storage area can be purged to make room for a donation of newer hose received from Lake County Fire Rescue a few months ago. Public works could use a few hose sections around the city and the hose would be suitable for their needs. The following lengths of hose will be transferred to the Public Works Department: Sections 2-049, 2-019, 2-016, 2-047, and 5-001. It is requested that the remaining hose declared surplus be donated to the Meeks Fire Department in Meeks, Georgia. A few years ago we donated a few sets of surplus gear to the South Trail Fire District Explorer Post 5531. I spoke with one of their explorer advisors who informed me they could still use more gear to outfit their explorers. The gear
will not be used for any firefighting and the department is willing to sign another release. I would like to request that the better of the equipment be donated to the explorer post if it s declared surplus. Respectfully, Michael Vitta
