ABOUT THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS (INDIA) The Institution of Engineers (India) or IEI is the largest multidisciplinary professional body that encompasses 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a global platform to share professional interest. IEI has membership strength of more than 0.8 million. Established in 1920, with its Headquarters at 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata 700 020. IEI has served the engineering fraternity for over nine decades. In this period of time it has been inextricably linked with the history of modern-day engineering. In 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India to be accorded this honour. Today, its quest for professional excellence has given it a place of pride in almost every prestigious and relevant organization across the globe. IEI functions among professional engineers, academicians and research workers. It provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the Government, Industries, Academia and the Engineering fraternity, operating from 120 Centres located across the country. The Institution has established R& D Centres at various locations in the country and also provides grant-in-aid to its members to conduct research and development on engineering subjects. IEI conducts Section A & B Examinations in different Engineering disciplines, the successful completion of which is recognized as equivalent to Degree in appropriate field of Engineering of recognized Universities of India by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India. Every year as many as 90000 candidates appear for these exams. For details, please see: www.ieindia.org THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS (INDIA), TELANGANA STATE CENTRE The Telangana State Centre of the Institution of Engineers (India)_ has on its rolls 7946.Corporate members covering fifteen disciplines of Engineering besides non-corporate Members to the order of 19,791. The Telangana State Centre has been one of the most active Centres of translating the objectives and ideals of IEI into practice. INTRODUCTION: The Institution of Engineers (India), Telangana State Centre has been conducting All India Seminars under the aegis of Civil Engineering Division on Civil subjects of national importance and of relevance to the issues that need to be addressed by the Central and State Governments. This year, the IEI, Telangana State Centre has contemplated to conduct Two-Day All India Seminar on TransitOriented Development in Urban Areas on 19-20 January 2018 under the aegis of Civil Engineering Division, IEI. ABOUT THE SEMINAR The ever expanding spatial growth of the urban Centers coupled with inadequate and lack luster Public Transport Systems resulting in proliferation of private vehicles at a geometric proportion is adding to the vows of the urban dwellers. Unrelented growth of private automobiles and non-expandable road space in the cities has become a serious concern to the Urban planners and administrators of the cities. The thinly populated areas spread over large area is not congenial to support the Public / mass transport system. This situation has given rise to the thinking of Transit Oriented Development (TOD). The premise of this development is to intensify the development around transit terminals or junctions. By this, large number of people can use limited road space which can accommodate Transit system either at ground level, above or below the ground level. Another feature of TOD is to develop residential colonies around the densely developed Transit terminal Areas enabling the residents to use Non-Motorized Transport modes like cycles and walking for work and recreation purposes. Community living in large scale becomes possible by the development of land use along the Transit Corridors, paving way for easy access to Transportation. The high density land use also helps in promoting other commercial and recreational activities, thereby creating self containing neighborhoods. The concept of T.O.D is developed in many of the countries. With a view to discuss the pros and cons of the TOD concept in our Indian context a National Seminar is being organized by the Telangana Centre of IEI. The aim of the Seminar is to provide a platform for the participants to discuss the related aspects and possible issues of TOD as relevant to Indian Context. The Seminar will also expose to the experiences of the countries where TOD concept have been implemented. 3

The Seminar also covers the advancements on the Transit Technologies and also the possible challenges posed in implementation of T.O.D as well. The Institution of Engineers (India) being one of the Premier Fora of Indian Technocrats that understands the concerns of the stakeholders like City Administrators, Developers, Planners and other stakeholders, has taken up on themselves to organize this Seminar to bring out considered view points of all stakeholders. The Institution invites participants from Urban Planners, Transportation Planners, Engineers, Consultants, City administrators and public representatives. THEME: Transit Oriented Development in Urban Areas Sub-Themes: Concepts of TOD and its Practices Urban Land Planning and TOD Requirements of Transit Systems to support TOD Transit Terminals and last Mile connectivity Case Studies of TOD Panel Discussion TOD Implementation Strategies. VENUE: The Seminar will be held at the Institution of Engineers (India), Telangana State Centre, Visvesvaraya Bhavan, Khairatabad, Hyderabad 500 004.
