INTRODUCTION TO AECOM AMAZING IS SEEING OUR CLIENTS VISIONS BECOME A REALITY THANKS TO THE HARD WORK AND IMAGINATION OF 18,000 ENGINEERS, PLANNERS, ECONOMISTS, SCIENTISTS AND PROGRAMME MANAGERS. LARA CHIEF EXECUTIVE, AECOM, EUROPE, MIDDLE EAST, AFRICA AND INDIA 4

When I first joined AECOM in my home town of Melbourne, Australia, I was a planner on a major port expansion and redevelopment project. I really didn t envisage that 20 years later I would be living in London and leading AECOM s Europe, Middle East, India and Africa business. The fact I am shows the opportunities available to you when you join AECOM. After years of study, you are probably feeling excited and perhaps a little apprehensive about what the next few years may hold. I certainly felt that way; I hope your next step will be to choose AECOM. With 800 graduates in the UK and Ireland, we are proud to be considered among the UK s top employers, rising to #54 in the Guardian UK 300 Graduate Employers List. Every day, I m amazed to learn of the challenges we solve for our clients, and the lives we re shaping and influencing through our work. It s these challenges that have seen me build my career here, and which make AECOM an exciting and rewarding place to start your career. Lara Poloni Chief Executive Europe, Middle East, India and Africa 5

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING AND PLANNING AMAZING IS CONTRIBUTING TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE CITY I WAS BROUGHT UP IN AND LOVE. AHSAN GRADUATE CIVIL ENGINEER, LONDON 8

Cycle route, Hyde Park, London Ahsanullah Wahedi is a Graduate Civil Engineer in our London Transportation team. He studied BEng and MSc Civil Engineering at University College London. As someone who has regularly cycled through London in the past, being part of the team that delivered the Cycle Superhighways has given me a real sense of achievement especially knowing it is making cycling safer for thousands of people across the capital and making London greener. I feel I ve made a real contribution to my city, helping it stay ahead and compete with other world cities like New York and Singapore. Making connections Join AECOM s growing Transportation team and get to work on some of the largest and most innovative infrastructure projects not only in the UK but around the world. Our team specialises in aviation, rail, highways, bridges, transport planning, Intelligent Transport Systems, development planning, traffic and local roads. Our talented team takes projects and products from concept to completion, including designing a new pier at Amsterdam s Schiphol Airport and products like the AECOM Arch, a game-changing 3D printed product designed to enable digital traffic management; the awardwinning Lagan Weir Bridge in Belfast; and the A303 upgrade between Amesbury and Berwick Down where we used virtual reality to accelerate project delivery. 9

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTING AMAZING IS BEING RECOGNISED AS A LEADING BIRD AND BOTANY SURVEYOR AFTER JUST ONE YEAR IN THE JOB. CAMERON GRADUATE ECOLOGIST, BIRMINGHAM 10

Cameron Chester is a Graduate Ecologist in our Birmingham Environment team. He studied Zoology at the University of Sheffield. I joined AECOM just over twelve months ago. In this time, my career has grown much faster than I imagined it would. Gaining species licences is really important as an ecologist; I m now on track to get both my great crested newt and barn owl licences this year. Becoming recognised in my industry for my ecological surveying skills so early on has taken hard work, but AECOM has provided all the resources and support I ve needed to get here. Protection is key With one of the largest environmental teams in the country, we understand the complex interactions between a range of environmental issues facing communities, organisations and entire countries, delivering air quality, ecology and remediation through to geospatial and data, carbon capture and environmental permitting projects, to name but a few. We recently completed one of the UK s most complex environmental impact assessments for High Speed Two (HS2) Limited, helping ensure the project is sustainable for both the environment and local communities. We are also driving innovation through research into how virtual reality can drive nature conservation. 11

GEOTECHNICAL AND TUNNELLING ENGINEERING AMAZING IS VOLUNTEERING ON A SCHOOL BUILDING PROJECT IN A REMOTE PART OF NAMIBIA. DRAGOS GRADUATE ASSISTANT ENGINEER, BIRMINGHAM 12

Namibia Dragos Dumitrascuta is an Assistant Engineer in our Birmingham office. He graduated with a BEng in Civil Engineering from Coventry University and then went on to complete an MSc in Tunnelling and Underground Space at the University of Warwick. When the chance came up to volunteer in Namibia with my friends, I wasn t sure I d be able to go due to my work commitments. But my manager and AECOM were really supportive. Through the company s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme I can volunteer my time to help communities and still get paid for some of the days. It means I ve been able to pursue both my professional and personal dreams of having a positive impact on people s lives around the world. Breaking new ground AECOM s ground engineers and tunnelling experts help deliver some of the world s most technically demanding projects. With a long history of providing geotechnical services, we deliver across sectors, including road, rail, property development, water, power, aviation, oil and gas, maritime and mining. Projects include a new bypass in Stockholm that will ease city congestion, a super sewer in London that will protect the Thames from pollution for decades to come and a new nuclear power station that will help provide energy for the next generation. 13

BUILDING ENGINEERING AND CONSULTING AMAZING IS HAVING THE SPACE AND TIME TO LEARN. CHARLOTTE GRADUATE MECHANICAL ENGINEER, CAMBRIDGE 14

GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry, University of Nottingham Charlotte Jeffrey is a Graduate Mechanical Engineer in our Cambridge Building Services team. She graduated with an MEng in Architectural Engineering at Heriot Watt University. My role is to design heating, cooling and ventilation systems for buildings. I m constantly given the opportunity to develop my career through both training and on-the-job experience I ve already worked on several projects since I joined, including residential and hospital projects. I also take part in mechanical team learning meetings where I can always ask for specific training or information. As a graduate I feel trusted to get on with my work and to ask for help whenever I need to. Doing more with less In a world of finite resources, AECOM s building engineering team is committed to delivering sustainable solutions, whether for a tall building, airport terminal or shopping mall. Optimising the performance of buildings is key to our work. Building engineering involves building services and public health, building physics, structures, acoustics, fire, process and automation, information technology, communications and sustainability. Recent low energy projects include 7 Air Street, London the UK s most sustainable historic building and the University of Nottingham s new GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratory for Sustainable Chemistry, which has achieved both LEED Platinum and BREEAM Outstanding ratings, raising the benchmark in sustainable lab design. 15

WATER ENGINEERING ANDZCONSULTING AMAZING IS HAVING MENTORS WHO GUIDE AND CHALLENGE ME. LAURA GRADUATE WATER CONSULTANT, LEEDS 16

Swindale Valley, Cumbria Laura Bilton is a Graduate Consultant in our Water team in Leeds. She gained a BSc in Geography at Northumbria University. All of my colleagues at AECOM are like mentors to me. Everyone is approachable and ready to help no matter how many questions I ask. We have a Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM) mentor in our office, who helps me keep on top of my chartership requirements, while my line manager helps me identify my key strengths and opportunities to get involved in different aspects of projects and the wider business. Thinking differently about water For us, water is key to creating healthier communities and more beautiful places. We are making both of these a reality; whether delivering flood risk projects that enhance the natural environment, to developing energy-efficient treatment processes and smart water networks. Managing the water cycle across whole catchments, our scope includes water and wastewater treatment, water infrastructure and flood and coastal erosion risk management. We are helping deliver some of the UK s major water projects including the Thames Tideway Tunnel the largest water infrastructure project ever undertaken in the UK to the Swindale Valley restoration scheme in Cumbria. 17

SURVEYING AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT AMAZING IS RELOCATING FROM LONDON TO DUBAI HALFWAY THROUGH MY GRADUATE TRAINING. GEORGINA GRADUATE QUANTITY SURVEYOR, DUBAI 18

Dubai, UAE Georgina Bishop is a Quantity Surveyor in our Dubai Cost Consultancy team. She studied Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management at Oxford Brookes University. I d always wanted to work abroad and was ready for a new challenge when I was given the chance to relocate to AECOM s Dubai office. I hadn t expected such a great opportunity so early in my career. I ve gained so much experience, working on some fantastic projects so far. I ve learnt a lot from integrating into a new culture too. The first few weeks were the most challenging because I didn t know anyone but AECOM has been really supportive. I wonder where I ll go next? Adding value AECOM s programme, cost and consultancy experts serve private and public sector clients all over the world. They focus on reducing risk from projects, improving value and assuring outcomes. Practice areas range from building surveying, cost management and financial and economic consulting through to design management, project management, health and safety consulting and fiscal incentives. Some of our recent projects include cost managing the latest extension to London s Victoria & Albert museum and project and cost managing the delivery of Student Castle, a 55-storey tower in Manchester and new build in Brighton. 19

DESIGN, PLANNING AND ECONOMICS AMAZING IS HAVING THE FREEDOM TO BALANCE MY WORK, HOLIDAYS AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES. ROISIN GRADUATE TOWN PLANNER, BELFAST 20

Dreamland, Margate Roisin McGrane is a Graduate Town Planner in our Belfast Design, Planning and Economics (DPE) team. She graduated with a BSc in Geography before gaining her MSc in Planning and Development both at Queen s University Belfast. There are lots of benefits of working at AECOM from being able to buy more holidays and private health insurance to being part of a really sociable office. It means it s easy to achieve a great work-life balance, and feel a sense of wellbeing, which helps keep me motivated, healthy and happy it really is a place I enjoy coming to everyday. Creating places to enjoy Our DPE practice line comprises landscape architecture, town planning, environmental and ecological planning, economics, masterplanning, workplace interior design and strategy consulting, sustainability and urban design. Flagship projects include the 2012 London Olympic Park, Dreamland in Margate and the Chelsea Football Club at Stamford Bridge. 21

ARCHITECTURE AMAZING IS ALL THE FRIENDS I VE MET SINCE STARTING AT AECOM. ISABELLE GRADUATE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, MANCHESTER 22

Rio 2016 Olympic Park Brazil Isabelle de Garston is a Graduate Landscape Architect in our Manchester Architecture team. She gained a BA in Landscape Architecture at the Manchester School of Architecture. A real plus of being part of a big company is that you get to meet so many great people. From my first day at AECOM I met other graduates just like me. I ve also made friends with colleagues who work at different levels across the business who I ve met through the company s sports and social group where we take part in fun group activities like go-karting. Shaping the world around us Our architecture team delivers projects that seek a balance between art and technology, form and function, beauty and purpose. Our building and interior designers and landscape architects deliver high-rise buildings that form city skylines, transportation, educational and healthcare facilities and community-wide design schemes. We designed the Rio 2016 Olympic Park venues and are delivering high quality strategies from an integrated digital design platform, including for Al Wakrah, the first stadium on site for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. We re also working on mixed-use developments that facilitate new ways of living and working. 23

WORK PLACEMENTS AMAZING IS FEELING A STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING AN AECOM GRADUATE CIVIL ENGINEER. TENI GRADUATE 24

AECOM, Aldgate Tower, London Teni Akinajo completed her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering at Coventry University and is about to start a Masters degree. I found out about AECOM s summer placement through Sponsors for Educational Opportunity. During my eight weeks with the rail team in Croydon I helped solve problems on real projects, even developing construction plans for an urban scheme that will ensure the project doesn t disrupt one of London s busiest Underground stations. I learnt about the daily tasks of a civil engineer and that at AECOM, it is about more than doing just calculations. Teamwork is so important and you receive so much support. I felt like my ideas were heard and valued. It was such a rewarding experience and I hope to take up a graduate opportunity at AECOM in 2019. We take on around 200 summer and industrial placement students a year.
