General Safety Instructions Read this manual thoroughly before first use, even if you are familiar with this type of product. The safety precautions enclosed herein reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and injury when correctly adhered to. Keep the manual in a safe place for future reference, along with the filled in warranty card, purchase receipt and carton. If applicable, pass these instructions on to the next owner of the appliance. Always follow basic safety precautions and accident prevention measures when using an electrical appliance, including the following: Electrical safety and cord handling Before first use, make sure the voltage indicated on the appliance corresponds to your local outlet voltage. If it does not match, contact the after sales support line and do not use the toaster. To protect against electric shock, do not immerse the cord, plug or any nonremovable parts of this toaster in water or other liquid. Should the toaster accidentally fall into water, unplug it immediately and have it checked by a qualified person before using it again. Danger of electric shock! Ensure your hands are dry before handling the plug or switching on the toaster. Check the power cord regularly for visible damage. If the cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its authorised service centres or similar qualified personnel to avoid any hazards. In case of damage, contact the after sales support line for advice on repair or replacement of the damaged product. This toaster comes with a shorter power supply cord to reduce the risk resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord. For safety reasons, adjust the cord underneath the base to the shortest length possible between the base and the outlet. Do not let the cord hang over the edge of a table or benchtop or touch hot surfaces. Keep the cord away from any heat sources. Do not wind the cord around the toaster. Do not use this toaster with an extension cord. Do not use this toaster with an external timer or separate remote control system. Do not unplug the toaster by pulling on the cord, pull the plug to disconnect. 1

General Safety Instructions (Cont.) Usage conditions and restrictions This appliance is intended for household use only. It is neither suitable for commercial nor for outdoor use. Do not use this appliance for anything other than its intended purpose, and only use it as described in this manual. Any other use is not recommended and may cause fire, electric shock or injury. Improper use or installation, and the use of accessory attachments not recommended by the appliance distributor, may result in fire, electric shock or personal injury. We assume no liability for any eventual damages caused by improper use or incorrect handling. The appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. Young children should be supervised to ensure they do not play with the appliance. Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children. Safe usage Make sure you know how the toaster functions and how to use it. Place the toaster on an even, non-slippery and heat-resistant surface. Do not place the toaster near a hot gas or electric burner, or in a heated oven. During operation, the temperature above the bread slots rises significantly. Therefore, do not operate the toaster below or near any materials that can ignite easily (such as curtains or drapes) or underneath wall cabinets. During use, make sure that neither the power cord nor other objects lie across the bread slots. Never attempt to put your fingers into the bread slots during use. Immediately unplug the toaster if fire or smoke is emitted. CAUTION: HOT! The toaster heats up and can cause burns. The metal housing on top of the toaster can become very hot. Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs. Do not insert oversized food, metal foil packages or utensils into the toaster as they may cause a risk of fire or electric shock. CAUTION: Never attempt to dislodge food when the toaster is plugged in. 2

General Safety Instructions (Cont.) Do not leave the appliance unattended while in use. Disconnect it from the power supply when you are finished with it, or when you have to leave the room. To disconnect the toaster, turn every control off, then remove the plug from the wall outlet. Maintain the toaster in accordance with the instructions to ensure it functions properly. Unplug the toaster and allow it to cool before cleaning. Empty and clean the crumb tray regularly to avoid creating a fire risk. Do not use metal scouring pads for cleaning. Pieces can get broken and there is a risk of electric shock if the pad comes in contact with electrical parts. Do not use the appliance if it was dropped, if it is damaged or if the cord or plug is damaged. In case of damage, contact the after sales support line for advice. CAUTION: Never attempt to open the housing and repair the appliance yourself. Never attempt to drive any objects into the appliance. Danger of electric shock! 3

Getting Started Before first use Read all safety instructions on the previous pages. Remove all packaging materials, labels and/or stickers from the appliance and dispose of them responsibly. Plastic wrapping can be a suffocation hazard for babies and young children, so ensure all packaging materials are out of their reach. Make sure there is no packaging material remaining in the slots. Fully unwind the power cord and inspect it and the plug for damage. Do not use the toaster if it is visibly damaged or not working properly. In case of damage, contact the after sales support line for advice on replacement. Clean toaster before using it for the first time (see page 13 for cleaning instructions). Place the toaster on an even and heat-resistant surface. Do not place the toaster where heat, moisture or high humidity are generated, or near combustible materials. Plug the toaster into an appropriate power outlet and switch on power at the outlet. The power socket must be readily accessible so that in an emergency it can be easily switched off and the toaster unplugged. Set the browning control to the maximum level (6) and press the on/off button. Let your toaster heat up for approximately four minutes without any bread. NOTE: Due to remnants from the manufacturing process burning off, you may notice a slight burning smell when first using the toaster. This is no cause for concern. Place the toaster in a well ventilated area and let it complete a few toasting cycles until no more odour or smoke is present. After a short cooling down period, your toaster is now ready for use. The usage instructions start on page 10. All parts referred to in the instructions are listed on page 8. 5

Instructions Toasting Make sure the crumb tray is properly in place before using the toaster. (It is located underneath the heating elements and can be pulled out from the side of the toaster opposite the controls.) Make sure that the power cord underneath the appliance is clamped in the respective cable guide: there are two guides for the cord exit, one for a 120V flat cord and one for a 240V round cord (as pictured, right). Place the toaster on an even and heatresistant surface and connect it to a 120V 240V properly installed wall socket. The LCD panel lights up and displays the chosen settings (browning level, countdown time, special functions, etc.). Press the open/close lid button to open the lid. Insert the bread into the bread slots. The toaster holds two slices. Turn the browning control knob to your desired browning level (1-6). The higher the number, the longer the toasting time. (See page 12 for hints on toasting times for different types of bread.) Press the on/off button. The lid of the toaster closes automatically and the toasting process starts. The LCD panel will display the countdown toasting time. When the required toasting level has been achieved, the toaster switches off automatically. The lid opens, moving and lifting the toast slices into their initial position for easy removal. NOTE: To interrupt the toasting cycle before automatic cut-off, press the on/ off button. The lid will open and the toast slices can be removed. After several toasting cycles, pull out the crumb tray and clean it. (See the cleaning instructions on page 13.) WARNING: If a slice of bread should get stuck during the toasting process, unplug the appliance and let it cool down completely before trying to remove it. Do not use any sharp metal objects to do so. 6

Instructions (Cont.) Reheat function Use this function to reheat bread that was toasted earlier. Simply insert the bread into the bread slots, press the reheat button and then the on/off button. The lid closes and the reheating process starts. The toaster automatically stops after approximately 24 seconds. The preset browning level has no influence on the reheat cycle. To cancel the reheat function, press the reheat and the on/off button. Defrost function To activate the defrost function, start the toaster as described before, but press the defrost button before choosing your desired browning level, then press the on/off button. The lid of the toaster closes and the countdown time starts. The defrost cycle stops automatically. The preset browning level determines the defrost/countdown time. Bagel function Cut your bagel into half and insert the two halves into the bread slots facing the centre of the unit. Press the bagel function button (toasting on one side only), choose your desired browning level and start the toasting cycle by pressing the on/off button. To stop the toaster before it stops automatically, press the on/off button. CAUTION! Do not touch any hot parts of the toaster during or immediately after use. Toasted bread can be very hot, take care when handling it. Let it cool down or use pot-holders. If the toaster does not switch off automatically after a few minutes, press the on/off button and disconnect the power plug. If you notice smoke coming out of the toaster, disconnect it from the power immediately. Wait until the toaster has cooled down and take out any food that may still be inside the toasting slot. Turn the toaster upside down over a sink and gently shake it to dislodge any burnt crumbs. Empty and clean the crumb tray (see page 13). Never attempt to remove bread jammed in the toasting slot without unplugging the toaster from the electrical outlet first. Be sure not to damage the internal mechanism or heating elements when removing bread. 7

Other Useful Information Some tips for perfect toasting Toasting is a combination of cooking and drying bread. As moisture levels differ from one bread to another, toasting times can vary. For slightly dry bread, use a lower browning setting. For fresh bread or wholemeal bread, use a higher setting. Breads with very uneven surfaces (such as English muffins) will require a higher setting. Thickly cut pieces of bread will take longer to toast, sometimes significantly longer, since more moisture must be evaporated from the bread before toasting can occur. Before toasting bagels, slice each bagel into two equal halves. Then follow the instructions on page 11 for using the bagel function for one-side toasting. When toasting raisin or other fruit bread, remove any loose raisins from the surface of the bread before placing the slices into the toaster. This will help prevent pieces from falling into the toaster or sticking on the guard wire in the slot. Single slice toasting: If you are toasting a single slice of bread, select a lighter browning setting than usual. The toaster is designed to heat the whole toasting chamber for two slices. By reducing the time for toasting a single slice, it will not be over-toasted. 8

Other Useful Information Cleaning and maintenance Always disconnect the toaster from the power outlet and allow it to cool before cleaning the toaster. Wipe the outside surfaces with a soft, dry or slightly dampened cloth. Never use a metal scouring pad, abrasive materials or metal polish on any surface. Do not use any aggressive cleaning agents and/or other hard objects to clean the appliance. Clean the crumb tray regularly to avoid a build-up of crumbs. If the toaster is used frequently, remove the accumulated bread crumbs at least once a week. Pull the crumb tray out from the side of the toaster opposite the controls. Empty it and wipe the tray with a slightly damp cloth. To remove stubborn spots, use a nylon or plastic scouring pad dampened in soapy water and squeezed almost dry. Dry the crumb tray thoroughly before sliding it back into position. Ensure that the tray is fully slotted back into place before operating the toaster. When the toaster is not being used, wind the power cord neatly away around the hooks underneath the toaster. If you wish to have the lid closed while the toaster is not in use, press the lid open/close button before unplugging the appliance from the power supply. WARNING! Never immerse toaster in water or any liquid for cleaning. Do not clean the inside of the toaster, as this may damage the heating elements. Water and liquids must never enter the toaster. Responsible disposal At the end of its working life, do not throw this appliance out with your household rubbish. Electrical and electronic products contain substances that can have a detrimental effect on the environment and human health if disposed of inappropriately. Observe any local regulations regarding the disposal of electrical consumer goods and dispose of it appropriately for recycling. Contact your local authorities for advice on recycling facilities in your area. 9
