Established in 1918 and founded by Charles Rysdon, Sioux Steel Company s facilities were first located in a small horse barn with an adjacent wagon repair area. These buildings were next to an abandoned granite quarry across the Sioux River from the old Queen Bee Mill, above the Sioux a single power shaft went down the entire length of the building to run machinery. 1918 Established In Business thrived into the later Falls. Powered by electric motors, 1930 s, manufacturing farm equipment such as hog feeders, stock tanks, cupolas, wagon box floors, barn ventilators and grain Charles Rysdon First Generation Owner Max Rysdon Second Generation Owner storage bins. In 1940, Max Rysdon took over as President. After the death of his father, Max led Sioux Steel to push forward and expand its territories from the adjacent five states to as far as Georgia and Alabama. By 1951, Max Rysdon s 14 year old son, Phil, worked summers at the plant in the nuts and bolts, welding and maintenance departments. After college, Phil Sioux Steel supplied most of the furnace duct work for homes and offices in the Sioux Falls area. In the late 1920 s, Sioux Steel soon began selling furnaces, wall and floor grids (registers), and oil storage tanks that required two new additions to the facility. After college, Charles s son, Max joined the firm as Sales Manager and Purchasing Agent. Fun Facts: Sioux Steel factory workers & employees with owners Charles & Max Rysdon Charles Rysdon s son Max was 15 when his dad started the company. Max s first summer job was as water-boy for the factory, seeing that the drinking water was kept full and iced. Sioux Steel s first big break was in the building of McKennan Hospital (now Avera Health System), supplying all of the copper shingles for the facility. Top: Product advertisements from 1921. At the same time, we remain a strong supporter of our community and committed to staying involved for the long haul. Phil Rysdon Third Generation Owner In the late 1950 s and early 1960 s, additional plant space was added to expand the operations with more receiving and warehouse areas. A finance department called Empire Credit was started and Sioux purchased the number one auger manufacturer, Koyker Manufacturing Company, which was located in Hull, Iowa. Koyker s product line was expanded in the mid 1960 s, with the addition of a line of front-end tractor loaders and grain cleaners. With increasing sales of products & an unprecedented boom in the farm economy, the building of a third manufacturing facility located in in 1977 began. Phil Rysdon took over as President in the 1980 s. Faced with the farm crisis, high interest rates and poor crops, Sioux Steel relocated it s Hull, IA facility, and its product lines to the Lennox plant location. Also in the late 80 s, Phil Rysdon s son, Scott, was 18 when he began his career in the tank department. He became project manager after completing college and a 3 year management position with the Surgical Center in Sioux Falls. Scott was Sales Manager for several years and is now CEO of Sioux Steel.
Sioux 132 Commercial Grain Bin 1 Million Bushel Capacity In 2002, Sioux started the process to build a new state-of-the-art paint, powder-coat and weld facility in Lennox, creating a completely separate Livestock division. The Livestock Division has expanded it s product line immensely to include everything that any farm or ranch would need. Sioux Steel Company, in 2008, opened a Koyker Manufacturing - new division called Fusion Plastics. We don t just want our customers to be satisfied we want them to be delighted to do business with us. Scott Rysdon Fourth Generation Owner This ultra-modern 45,500 square foot facility makes rotational molded plastics for a broad range of agricultural, marine, RV and custom contracted customers. When I joined the Sioux Steel Company more Phil Rysdon Third Generation Owner & President than 50 years ago, there were 4.3 million farmers and about 23,000 implement dealers. It was a different time back then as corn yields were 50-100 bushels per acre and our largest grain bin was around 21 with corn prices hovering around $1.90 per bushel. Much has changed since then. We will gather the opportunities that have been given to us today through the utilization of excellent staff and employees, planning, and clear vision into the future. - Phil Rysdon During the last 15 years, Sioux Steel has intuitively expanded its products with the development of commercial grain bins, grain bagging systems, paddle sweeps, on-farm containment and Pro Tec engineered fabric buildings, used for everything from grain storage to confinement cattle feeding.
