The Laurel Leaflet Next Meeting - Thursday, May 5, 2016-7:00pm St. Luke s Church, 232 Wyoming Avenue Parking - off-street - and behind church President: Carla Preate - First Vice President: Marisa Litwinsky - Second Vice President: Barbara Dehaba Treasurer : John Crounse - Secretary: Nancy Harvey THE LAUREL LEAFLET President s Message Just a friendly reminder...if you plan to renew your membership, please pay your dues today! The Duboistown Garden Club has extended an invitation to attend their Spring a Luncheon on Wednesday, May 18 at Genetti's in Williamsport. The guest speaker is NGC accredited Master Flower Show Judge, Terri Maclay. If anyone is interested in attending as a representative of our club, please let me know ASAP. Our club depends on fund raising activities such as the June Plant Auction. I'm counting on your support and participation to make this year's event successful once again. We need plants! Now is the time to separate your perennials and get them potted for the sale. Don't wait until the week of the auction. Start potting now; sooner is better. If anyone has extra pots that they are not using, please bring them to the May meeting to share. Also, if you have useable garden-related items that you no longer want or need, please bring them to the meeting for the Sale Table which will be held this year in September. Our club has a number of events planned in the next few months. I hope to see many of you at each one! Carla Preate, President Meeting Agenda: Guest Speaker is: Susan Crane from Two Cranes Plants and the topic will be Topiaries". May Basket Exchange - Bring a basket, take home a basket - Committee members are Michele Hoiken and Joanne Scanlon 1

The Laurel Garden Club MAY Baskets 2016 Revised 03-13-16 Choose a theme. Choose plants that best represent your theme. At least 3 different plants must be used in your basket/container. Choose healthy plants that are in good condition. Plants may be selected from your garden or purchased. Choose plants with similar growing requirements. Do NOT include artificial flowers or plants, choose a basket or repurpose a container that best represents your theme. Choose a basket/container that is sturdy enough to handle the combined weight of your plant selections and soil. Label your basket/container according to your selected theme. Provide plant information: name, annual or perennial, indoor or outdoor, light requirements, feeding.to prepare, line your basket/container with plastic that covers the bottom and up the sides or use a plastic container. Clear plastic salad containers make great liners. Be sure your liners are not visible. Sphagnum moss and small stones can improve drainage and add a finished look to your basket/container. Arrange your plants depending on how your basket/container should be viewed. If your basket is meant to be viewed from one side, arrange taller plants in the background. Add tokens that fit in with your theme to draw the eye to the intended view. Plants intended for drying might include a bunch of dried flowers placed in the center of a round basket. A grouping of coneflowers might include several butterflies strategically placed to emphasize the theme. A gnome placed in a fairy garden. Additional decorations such as bows or ribbons should be proportioned to the size of your container. A large bow on a small basket may distract away from the overall theme while a small bow on a large basket may give your basket or container an unbalanced appearance. Leaf shine may be used to enhance foliage.fill around the plants with potting soil up to 1 inch beneath the rim of your basket. Add neutral plants such as ferns and/or ivy as contrast or to fill in around plants.arrive a few minutes early at the May meeting to allow time to register your entry and placement of a ticket on your entry. The winner will be selected based on how well their entry represents their chosen theme, attention to detail and presentation. The winner will have first choice of the remaining baskets. The owner of the first basket chosen will then make the next selection and so on until all presenters receive a basket to take home. Judging will be conducted by 3 members selected from those in attendance who did not submit an entry. Refreshments: Joanne Scanlon, Joyce Crounse, Marilou Mancuso, Kay Smith, Elena Shurdom Raffle Prizes: Kay Smith, Marilou Mancuso, Marsha Scotti, Mary Ellen McCaffery, Mary Aloe Flowering bulbs and shrubs 1 or 3 specimens displayed.
