President, Bob Hoffman and Treasurer, Dorothy Martinez will be doing a presentation about The Hudson Gardens & Event Center on Thursday, March 20 th at 7:00 pm. Please join us for a potluck before the program. Bring your favorite main dish, side dish, salad, or dessert. The potluck will start at 6:00 pm with the program to follow at 7:00 pm. Both will be held in the Plant Society Building (Horticulture Building) located within Denver Botanic Gardens. The Horticulture Building is located at the West end of the staff parking lot and drive. The building is immediately adjacent to the Bonsai Garden and Pavilion. From inside the pedestrian area of DBG, the Horticulture Building is reached by walking through the sliding gate at the Northwest end of the greenhouse structure and West Terrace. The presentation will include Hudson Gardens history, an overview of its various plant and tree collections, educational programs offered there, concert and event venues, and what future plans are. One exciting development underway at Hudson Gardens is the remodeling of the existing water garden South of Monet s Place. The current water feature is being dredged and cleaned, a new liner will be installed, and large containers for water lilies and lotus will be added as well as the addition of a dam with a small stream. We have high expectations for this new feature. Please consider visiting Hudson Gardens this Spring and Summer. If you haven t ever been, you ll absolutely love it. If you haven t been in awhile, a lot has changed and improved. An added benefit at Hudson Gardens is there is no admission fee to visit, it s always free.

Feature Articles 3 Coming Next Month Get Wet explores fluid form by Bill Powell Water by its very nature assumes many forms. It runs, gurgles, sprays, lies placidly in a sheet, or erupts suddenly. It can transform character instantly, presenting an astonishing range of effect. Spout in the Form of a Crayfish from the Villa Lante, Bagnaia Italy, circa 1560, (photo courtesy of Ann Komara) Through the centuries and across cultures, ornamental gardens have exploited water s mutable potential. This year s program at our signature April Get Wet event will explore the many forms that water has assumed aesthetically and socially in gardens from antiquity to the present. Ann Komara, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Colorado Denver, will present Water: Fluid Form in the Garden. Ann teaches both design studios and seminars on landscape history and theory. She is a 2008 Fulbright Fellow to Finland and Fellow of Dumbarton Oaks in Georgetown, Washington D.C. Next month s issue of The WaterGarden will highlight Professor Komara s April presentation at Get Wet. For now, mark the date on your calendar. This program promises to be thought provoking and visually delicious. The evening will also include photos of the winners from the 2013 International Waterlily and Water Gardening Society (IWGS) New Waterlily Competition as well as early information on the IWGS Symposium that will be held later this summer at Denver Botanic Gardens. Each year, we are finding it increasingly difficult to find enough participants, as well as someone to organize the tour. We will not be organizing or hosting our own Pond Tour or Picnic this year. The Pikes Peak Water Garden Society formed in 1989 and is celebrating their 25 th year anniversary this year. Their purpose is to encourage interest, inform and educate enthusiasts in the construction and maintenance of water gardens, aquatic life and plants, and keeping a well-balanced pond. Several of the original members remain active today. Originating in Colorado Springs, Colorado, much of its membership is based in and around the Pikes Peak area. (continued on page 5)
