Who KNEWton - Kirsten O'Neill Turning a rental into Home Sweet Home Each month we are going to introduce you to a different member of our team and share some top tips from our experts. This month, Director, Kirsten O'Neill shares her top tips on making a rental a home without breaking the bank.
Kirsten O Neill is Newton s youngest director. Kirsten, who has a degree in Design and Applied Arts from Edinburgh College of Art,, has worked with Newton for over 18 months. She has a busy time overseeing Newton s operations, human resources and marketing. Many of us rent a home at some point in our lives, here Kirsten O Neill, who has rented a number of flats shares her tips for making a rental property feel like home Just because you rent doesn t mean your home cant be stylish. Yes, your landlord might object to you painting the lounge pistachio but there are lots you can do without affecting the home, spending a fortune or endangering your deposit. With a little time and energy and imagination you can make your rental feel like home.
Personalise Buy some cheap matching photograph frames and scatter photographs of friends and family around your home. Art without holes Opt for a large canvas or mirror to decorate your walls from the floor by propping it against a wall to add depth and light to a room Make outside your own If you have a balcony or an outside area invest in some garden furniture (you can take it with you when you move on) even a cheap retro deckchair will help make outside your own. Love a plant Plants and flowers will brighten up any space.. As well as lounge and hall, many plants can used to brighten up a bathroom and don t forget outside planters and window boxes. Creative Storage Rented homes can lack storage, which can lead to mess. Add inexpensive furniture or
accessories like bookcases, which can be a perfect combination of storage and decoration. Rugs, Cushions & Throws Layering rugs is a great way to conceal a not so good looking floor, as well as add texture and colour. Choose rugs of different sizes, colours, designs and materials for a bohemian feel. Or for a more modern look, place a large, neutral rug on the bottom (a jute or sisal rug would be ideal) and add a bolder one on top. Scatter some cushions and a chunky throw; cover a chair with a sheepskin; find a funky upholstered stool; use colourful towels in an all white bathroom when it comes to textiles, the possibilities are endless. Lighting Even the best styled room will look flat under inadequate lighting. There are three type of lighting ambient, task and accent. Ambient light is the general one, often provided by ceiling lighting. Task lighting is intended to provide light for a specific function (such as a floor lamp above a chair as depicted in this picture) and accent lighting draws attention to a particular object or a small area, for decorative purposes. Table lamps, low wattage downlights, or even candles can be used as accent lighting. Even when turned off, lighting accessories can be highly decorative. Small touches Even you can t make large scale changes, you can still inject beauty and style with small touches Try a collection of vases, a book display, a flower arrangement on a hall table, or simply a few candles on a tray.
