West Coast OAH Monitoring Inventory Sara Briley, CA Sea Grant Fellow Ocean Protection Council

The Pacific Coast Collaborative (PCC) West Coast Leaders Agreement in 2008 Governors (CA, OR, WA) & Premier (B.C.) Focus: West Coast climate & energy challenges OAH subcommittee in 2013: 1. 1. Design and implement coordinated, effective West Coast OA research and monitoring 2. 2. Initiate the development of an international network of countries, states, provinces and cities to work to together to address the threat of changing ocean conditions, particularly OA www.pacificcoastcollaborative.org

20 scientific experts Charge of Panel: Advance understanding of OAH Develop management options Convened in 2013 by the Ocean Science Trust at the request of the California Ocean Protection Council, released Executive Summary in April 2016

West Coast OAH Monitoring Network Design WCOAH Science Panel recommendation to build a monitoring network that: 1. Supports the needs of decision-makers 2. Measures an array of physical, chemical, and biological variables 3. Builds on ongoing efforts Observing assets Procedure guidance Data access 4. Develops and sustains intellectual capacity

WC-OAH Science Panel 1. Define info needs 2. Align what you have with what you need 3. Prioritize what you still need 4. Enhance consistency of WC effort 5. Commit to the long-term 6. Communicate info widely

West Coast OAH Monitoring Inventory Identify the backbone of OAH monitoring assets that can be built upon to create an integrated monitoring network. First by jurisdiction, then integrated regionally Assess the OAH monitoring landscape Physical/Bio-geochemical Biological Financial/Operational Security

West Coast OAH Monitoring Inventory British Columbia, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California have inventoried their research and monitoring communities. Collaborative effort with the PCC/IWG-OA Joint Monitoring Taskforce Oregon & California are directing the regional integration and web product development efforts OR/CA results on right British Columbia, Alaska, and Washington are working closely and soon to follow! 36 Shore-Side Sensors 94 Moorings 5 Survey Areas 16 Tracks 988 Cruise Stations ALL of the information collected is being made into digital tools and web maps for the use of natural resource managers and researchers 1153 Sample Sites

TF Strategy: What we have Stage 1 next steps: QA/QC and aggregate information (in progress; complete Fall 2017) Roll-up to regional product(s) Soon Select host site for products Publically-accessible, stable (archival) site IPAC-OA? Mirror the host at other sites, as desired West Coast Ocean Data Portal IOOS Regional Associations Etc. Host site would include Inventory database Maps, story

TF Strategy: What we need Stage 2 task: Identify management OAH information needs and gaps (relative to inventory). Participants to include: Policymakers, managers Scientists IWG-OA agencies IOOS Regional stakeholders Stage 2 progress: Targeting Winter 2017-2018
