What is Dry Ice Cleaning? Environmentally responsible cleaning and surface preparation. How does it clean? Dry ice cleaning uses solid CO2, a non-abrasive media that won t damage surfaces or equipment. The super cooled dry ice pellets or particles are accelerated at supersonic speeds and sublimate on impact, resulting in the surface being cleaned, lifting dirt and contaminants off the underlying substrate. How it works... Instead of abrasive media to grind surfaces (and damage them), Cold Jet uses dry ice (Solid CO 2 ) accelerated at supersonic speeds that sublimate upon impact and lift contaminants from substrates. Dry Ice: The Green Clean A safe alternative for you and the environment Dry ice cleaning is effective and safe Dry ice is an approved medium by the EPA, FDA and USDA as an acceptable material in cleaning methods. For food processors, dry ice cleaning has been documented by the Food Standards Agency to effectively decontaminate surfaces of Salmonella, E. coli and Listeria. Dry ice cleaning does not release harmful gases into the atmosphere. Dry ice does not produce CO 2 or add CO 2 to the atmosphere and therefore does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Dry ice cleaning does not generate secondary waste. Dry ice cleaning is safe and nontoxic (once pellets impact the surface, they dissipate). Dry ice cleaning reduces or eliminates employee exposure to (and corporate liability from) the use of dangerous chemical cleaning agents. Environmentally Responsible In addition to being clean and safe, it is also important to remember that dry ice is obtained as a byproduct of other industrial processes - i.e. it is made from reclaimed CO 2. It does not produce CO 2 or add CO 2 to the atmosphere and therefore does not contribute to the greenhouse effect. Dry ice cleaning is truly and completely environmentally responsible. Other cleaning methods can be toxic When using solid grit media or water for cleaning hazardous materials, the cleaning media also becomes hazardous, requiring special handling, disposal and regulatory reporting. Dry ice creates none of these waste stream additions. Sand, soda or water blasting can create downstream contamination that affects surrounding installations. Soda blasting can kill surrounding vegetation. Chemical and solvent cleaning methods are toxic, which creates toxic waste and requires disposal. Workers are exposed to potentially harmful substances through the use of chemicals and solvents. We ve been able to cut back on our use of chemical solvents. Industry Overview: Textiles Reduce cleaning time and production downtime Lint, glue and other buildup are common problems within the textile industry. With dry ice cleaning, buildup can be removed without disassembly or damage to the equipment. Dry ice cleaning utilizes recycled CO 2 in the form of solid dry ice particles that are accelerated with compressed air through high velocity nozzles onto the surface being cleaned. The combination of the kinetic impact, thermal dynamics and gas expansion breaks the bond between the contaminant and the substrate, allowing the contaminant to be flushed away. The dry ice particles sublimate on impact, disappearing as they transition from solid to gas, leaving no secondary waste. Conveyors and other equipment can be cleaned in place, with little or no disassembly, making it faster than traditional methods. Also, as a dry cleaning process, it can be performed while equipment is still energized and at operating temperatures. Because dry ice particles are relatively soft compared to other forms of blast media, they provide a gentle yet aggressive clean that is non-abrasive - improving asset utilization rates and extending the life of your equipment.
