For the best results, they do need a little help from people. Some choose to use a lawn company, but, with the right program, you can have a beautiful green lawn the DIY way for less money. Behnke s Back to School Donation Drive July 19-August 19 Behnke Nurseries, in conjunction with Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Beltsville, is collecting donations to purchase school supplies for local children. ALL of the money raised will benefit the community. It s so easy to help. When you check out, just let the cashier know you want to donate. Choose $1, $5 or more. Every dollar counts.

SEPTEMBER September 1, September 2, September 8, September 9, September 15, Composting in Your Backyard Composting is a great way to recycle and, at the same time, produce a fantastic organic amendment to add to your gardens. This is often referred to as black gold. Carol will discuss easy ways to start composting in your own backyard, and what should or shouldn t be composted. The Lost Art of Plant Sharing: Taking Cuttings, Saving Seed and Dividing There was a time when you would admire a shrub or perennial in a friend s garden and they would give you cuttings or root divisons for your garden. Unfortunately, the art of home propagation is rarely being passed down from generation to generation anymore. Enter Carol! She will give you guidelines on how to start with cuttings, seed gathering/planting, and how/ when to divide plants. Hint: This is a great hobby! Questions about orchids? September 29, Natural Solutions to Living with Wildlife in Your Garden w/ Barbara Fennelly, Plant Pathologist, Horticulltural Consultant As we create beautiful environments for our enjoyment, it can be disheartening when the bunnies, squirrels and deer have brunch in our gardens. It s hard to be a nurturing gardener that helps wildlife without going crazy. Join Barbara as she shares years of collected wisdom and patience along with some good tips that might help you come to a peaceful arrangement. About the speaker: Barbara L. Fennelly has taught middle school science 28 years. Her educational background includes a BS in Plant Science, MS in Plant Pathology, and a Teaching degree. All throughout her college years and subsequently she has worked in greenhouses & nurseries. In addition, Barbara has been a teacher consultant for the EPA, Monarch Teachers Network, Florida Master Gardeners and Florida Audubon. Visit our fresh greens area full of the scents of Christmas with firs, boxwoods, hollies, pines and cedars, plus berries and cones. And enjoy a few extras during the day... Speakers at Behnke s OUR CAST OF CHARACTERS Meet Carol Allen Carol Allen has been involved in many aspects of gardening and horticulture since childhood and describes herself as a committable plant-a-holic. She has over twenty-five years experience in the horticulture industry with special interests in Integrated Pest Management (IPM), trees (she is an ISA certified arborist), landscape design, native plants, and tropicals of many kinds especially orchids. Carol teaches at several regional colleges in the areas of biology, biodiversity and many aspects of horticulture. She is certified in stormwater management systems and is a strong advocate of sustainability. She can often be heard giving talks on a wide range of topics at local venues, including Brookside Gardens, garden clubs and orchid societies, and, of course, Behnke s. Readers are informed and entertained by her column in the Washington Gardener magazine on pest issues. Carol confesses to growing a wide range of plants in and around her home that she shares with cats, anoles, tropical frogs, tropical fish, and pet snakes. Meet Christopher Lewis Christopher has been working for Behnke s since 2005 as a horticulturist in the Woody Plants Dept. and briefly as a Garden Shop Manager. Christopher is married and has two adult children. He grew up in western Howard County, Maryland, on a small farm where he learned to maintain the family vegetable garden and became interested in nature. He has a BS degree in geology and worked for a few years, in his twenties, on offshore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Certifications and Affiliations: Montgomery County Master Gardener since 2006 Volunteers at Brookside Gardens plant clinics. Maryland Certified Horticulturist with a specialist certification in Integrated Pest Management Beekeeper active with the Montgomery County Beekeepers Assoc.
