The Lily Pad The Topeka Area Water Garden Society Published Monthly February to November The objective of the society is to encourage a greater appreciation and interest in water gardening and aquatic plants, to disseminate information about those interests and to help our members stimulate the study and culture of water gardens. Volume 20, Issue 1 February 1,2017 TAWGS November 2016 Minutes President Chris Newell called the meeting to order. Self-introductions were made. Welcome to visitors Ron and Ronda Kathy. Chris introduced guest speaker Garret Lacy. Garrett is an owner of G&M Lawns in Valley Falls. G&M have bought business and products of the former Water Scapes in Topeka. They will be an Aqua Scapes dealer. They will carry pumps, liners, maintenance equipment, fish, plants and pottery. They have a web site available to order items, which can be delivered, as well as just answering your questions. They website is gm lawns@yahoo.com. Their store is located at 1412 K-4 Highway in Valley Falls. Don Taliaferro made a motion to make a correction in the minutes from last month in the spelling of Catarina Bruner s name. Don Reiger seconded the motion. Motion carried. There was no treasurer s report. Chris reminded everyone that Earlene Jirik is our guest speaker coordinator and to 7:00 February 1 st, 2017 Preston Hale Room Ward Meade Park Botanical Gardens 124 N. Fillmore Topeka, Kansas 66606 Kansas Garden Show Getting Ready for Spring- Waters Edge contact her if you have a speaker in mind for one of our meetings. Don Taliaferro will continue to be our Lily Pad editor. Scott Williams with KTWU was our guest at the potluck and meeting. TAWGS presented him with a gift certificate to Blind Tiger for the great job he did with Sunflower Journey s coverage of the our latest pond tour and history of TAWGS.. Mary Weaver reported that there are some free items available at the former Water Scapes site. There are some pond liners and propagation tables. If interested please call Mary.

After a great potluck, President Chris Newell passed the gavel to our 2017 president Craig Dannenberg. His first item of business was to thank Chris for all the hard work he had done 2016. A discussion was then held to whether the group wants to participate in the Kansas Garden Show (Feb.10,11,12) and the annual Pond Tour (June 24,25). Don Taliaferro reported that he had be approached by the Shawnee County Master Gardeners and Shawnee County Parks and Recreation if TAWGS would be interested in helping with their booth at the Kansas Garden Show in helping build a waterfall and small pond with stream. Don Taliaferro also made a motion to move the February TAWGS meeting to the 1 st at 7:00 at Ward-Meade in order to discuss plans for the Kansas Garden Show. Mary and Dave Horner will continue to provide refreshments for the meetings in 2017. Mary Weaver made a motion to adjourn, Don Taliaferro seconded the motion. Meeting adjourned. Door prizes were furnished by Catarina Bruner and Tom Charest. Winners were Linda Reynolds, Sherry Reed, Craig Dannenberg and Brad Williams. Chris Newell had talked with Topeka Beautification Assoc., who has decided to not participate in the Kansas Garden Show. Craig Dannenberg and Brad Williams shared plans they had designed for a small and simple booth for the Garden Show which would share information about the organization and tips on putting together a small water feature. Discussion of the pond tours showed the importance of having one to bring in new members to TAWGS and getting information out to those considering putting in a pond. Craig thought it may be a good idea to see if we could get ponds that have previously been on the tour. Don Taliaferro made a motion to participate in both the Kansas Garden Show and the Pond Tour. Tom Charest seconded the motion. Motion carried. From the President; Catarina and Tim Bruner graciously opened their home to host a committee meeting January 12 th to discuss the TAWGS booth

for the Kansas Garden Show. The show is at the Expocentre again and will be held February 10-12 th. This year s booth will be 20 by 10 space, much smaller than what we have done in previous years as we will not have other organizations helping to assemble it this year. We have gotten commitments from Skinner s to provide plants and materials, and from Waters Edge to provide a bubbler. In talking with Deb from Waters Edge about the garden show, I extended an invitation to either her and / or Sue to come speak, so they will be at the February 1 st meeting to talk about getting a pond ready for spring and what s new at the store. The committee also voted to approve $150.00 for the purchase from Sunflower Journeys of a looping DVD of just the segment Scott Williams did of the 2016 Pond Tour. Included in that price are the rights to publicly display the video. Our goals in putting the booth together are to find pond owners who are willing to be on the 2017 tour, increase membership in TAWGS and raise interest in having water features. We will have a signup sheet at the February meeting for members to volunteer at the booth and we d like for at least a couple to be there at any one time. This is our largest opportunity of the year to be in front of our target group, so having members there to engage the show goers and ask if they have an interest in water features, or if they have a pond and might be willing to be on the tour. This will be essential to what we do the rest of the year.
