MASTER / SLAVE FLUORESCENT FIXTURE INSTALLATION TIPS / GUIDELINES OVERVIEW: THE GARAGETEK LIGHTING FIXTURES ARE DESIGNED FOR INSTALLATION WITHOUT THE NEED FOR HARD WIRING. THE MASTER FIXTURE AND SLAVE FIXTURES ARE DESIGNED TO BE DAISY CHAINED SO THEY CAN BE ALL TURNED ON OR OFF WITH THE THROW OF 1 SWITCH. DAISY CHAINING MEANS THE 15FT CORD ON THE MASTER IS TO BE PULLED INTO AN ELECTRICAL OUTLET AND THE SLAVE FIXTURE(S) 12FT CORDS CAN BE PLUGGED INTO THE THREE PRONGED OUTLETS ON THE MASTER AND SUBSEQUENT SLAVE LIGHTING FIXTURES PER THE DIAGRAMS BELOW. TYPICAL INSTALLATION STEPS INCLUDE: PG 3 REV 2, 7/11

CON T: TYPICAL INSTALLATION STEPS INCLUDE: INSTALLATION TIPS / DOES AND DON TS - THE FIXTURE TOPS ARE FLAT AND CAN BE USED TO CONCEAL ANY EXTRA LENGTH OF UNUSED CORD. BETWEEN FIXTURES, THE CORD CAN BE PUSHED INTO THE PANEL SLOT; IT IS A COLOR MATCHED WHITE AND BECOMES HIDDEN. - THE LENS REFLECTS LIGHT PRIMARILY INTO THE OPEN GARAGE, BUT ALSO DOWN THE WALL AND UP TO THE CEILING. IF THE CEILING IS FINISHED, ADDITIONAL LIGHT IS REFLECTED OFF THE CEILING INTO THE ROOM. - AS FEW OR AS MANY FIXTURES (6 MAX) AS NEEDED CAN BE DAISY CHAINED TO PROVIDE THE DESIRED LIGHTING LEVELS. YOU CAN ADJUST TO ANY SIZE OR SHAPE GARAGE BY PLACING THE FIXTURES WHERE THEY ARE NEEDED AND IN WHAT QUANTITY THEY ARE NEEDED. - THE FIXTURES CAN BE EASILY RELOCATED BY THE HOMEOWNER WITHOUT THE NEED OF AN ELECTRICIAN AS THE FIXTURES ARE NOT PERMANENTLY MOUNTED OR HARD WIRED. - THE ELECTRICAL CORDS ARE COLOR MATCHED TO THE TEKPANEL AND INSTALL IN THE SLATS TO BECOME HIDDEN. THE CORDS DAISY CHAIN FROM FIXTURE TO FIXTURE. AN ELECTRICIAN IS NOT NEEDED TO INSTALL ANY SPECIAL OUTLETS AND THE TANGLE OF UNSIGHTLY CORDS IS ELIMINATED. - SWITCHING ON/OFF CAN BE DONE FROM A WALL SWITCH, IF THE PLUG IN OUTLET IS WIRED TO THE SWITCH, YOU CAN USE THE PULL CORD ON THE FIXTURE OR USE A REMOTE CONTROL SWITCH. - THE FIXTURES USE THE HIGHER EFFICIENCY T8 BULBS, INSTEAD OF THE OLDER, LESS EFFICIENT T12 BULBS. THE FIXTURES ARE UL LISTED. - A NON STARTER CAN ACTUALLY BE USED AS A STARTER AND PLUGGED DIRECTLY INTO AN OUTLET, BUT IT IS NOT FUSED. THE FUSE IS TO PROTECT AGAINST A USER FROM PLUGGING HIGH AMP LOADS (POWER TOOLS) INTO THE FIXTURES. PG 4 REV 2, 7/11

CON T: INSTALLATION TIPS / DOES AND DON TS - USE F32T8, 48 FLUORESCENT BULBS WITH A KELVIN RATING OF 4100K. THESE PROVIDE A WHITER LIGHT THAN THE LOWER RATINGS SUCH AS 3500K. BULBS ARE NOT PROVIDED WITH THE FIXTURES AS SHIPPED. - YOU HAVE A 50% CHANCE THE FLUORESCENT FIXTURES WILL TURN ON IF THE CIRCUIT ISN T GROUNDED AND THEN NOT CONSISTENTLY. USE GROUNDED CIRCUITS. - USE WIRE TIES TO BUNCH THE EXTRA CORD BETWEEN FIXTURES AND LAY THIS CORD ON TOP OF THE FIXTURE. IT IS THEN HIDDEN FROM VIEW. SEE THE IMAGE BELOW. - USE CABLE STAPLES TO HOLD THE POWER CORD IF USING A CEILING OUTLET PER THE IMAGE ABOVE. - AVOID MOUNTING FIXTURES ON THE WALL-TO-CEILING AREA ADJACENT TO OPEN GARAGE DOORS. THE OPEN DOOR(S) WILL BLOCK THE LIGHTING. SEE THE IMAGE BELOW. IF YOU MUST INSTALL IN THIS AREA, MOUNT BELOW THE DOOR HEIGHT. - THE MASTER (STARTER) FIXTURE HAS A 8 AMP FUSE TO PROTECT AGAINST FIXTURE SHORT CIRCUITS AND JUST AS IMPORTANT, PROTECT AGAINST MISUSE BY THE CUSTOMER. Ie NEVER PLUG POWER TOOLS OR OTHER HIGH AMP APPLIANCES INTO THE FIXTURE DAISY CHAIN OUTLETS. PG 5 REV 2, 7/11

Remote Control Lighting Switches - 11/07/11 I Background The GarageTek 48 fluorescent light fixtures are supplied as either a Master unit or a Slave unit. The Master units have a pull cord on/off switch and the Slave units do not have any switch. But what if you don t want to use the pull cord or have only Slave units without any on/off switch or don t want to spend $200 having an electrician hard wire your fixtures? One answer is to use a simple, anyone-can-install, plug-in remote control switch. II What is It and How does it work?? A remote control switch consists of a Controller and a Wireless Switch. The cost can range from $10 and up. It can be setup and works in three easy steps: Step #1: Plug the Controller into an electrical outlet. Step #2: Plug the light fixture(s) into the Controller. (In this example it is a light fixture, but it could be any other electrical or electronic device.) Step #3 Use the Wireless Switch to turn the light fixture(s) "on/off" from any location that is convenient for you. (ie. wall mount the switch at the entry door to the garage, next to your workbench, etc. with no wiring required.) How this works is the Wireless Switch is a transmitter which sends a signal to the Controller. When the signal is received by the Controller, it closes a relay allowing electricity from the electrical outlet to flow to the light. When the Switch is pressed again, the relay is opened and turns off the light. The same components are used in your garage door opener.

III Recommendations Amazon.com offers a wide selection of these switches at prices that probably can t be beatened elsewhere. Use the search term "remote control light switch". Several product photos of these Wireless Remote Switches that you will find on the Amazon site are shown on the previous page and below. Prices increase for this type product when more options are included, such as multiple plug-in sockets, a manual "on/off" button on the Controller, longer range, higher power rating. For the fluorescent light fixture(s) we are using here, the simplest controller & switch is fine. The only requirement in selecting a controller / switch combination is the plug-in sockets (both into the electrical outlet and the socket for the light fixture plug) must have a third ground plug because fluorescent light fixtures work only when grounded. You might get lucky and the fixture can be "naturally" grounded, but don't count on it.

Other uses around the home for this type switch you might consider... 1. Turning "on/off" a digital picture frame when you are or aren't home for the day or at night. 2. Turning "on/off" your Christmas tree lights when a switched outlet is not available. 3. Most electronic devices around the house still use electrical power when turned off and keep adding to your electrical bill. The only way to really turn off these items is to "pull the plug" when not using them or another choice would be to use a wireless remote switch. 4. In a hallway where the light switch was inconveniently located, I added a remote control light switch that looks exactly like a regular wall switch. Alternative Suggestion - Motion sensor switches In addition to the wireless remote switch, there are motion sensor controllers which can also turn the lights "on/off". There is no separate wireless switch. Motion sensor controllers sense movement, turn the light(s) on and will keep them on for a preset time. As movement is continually sensed, the controller timer resets continually. You preset the amount of time to keep the lights on between resets. I use the model shown below in our laundry room. When carrying a load of laundry into or out of the room, there is no need to try to flick a light switch with an elbow. The Sensor Plug model shown below has been criticized as does not work in garages when it is colder, near freezing. I do not know if this is fact or not.

Ceiling Mounted GarageTek Lighting - 02/17/12 I Background The GarageTek 48 fluorescent light fixtures are supplied with a slatwall mounting bracket and the standard method of mounting them is on wall mounted TekPanel or TekTrak Channel. The power cord is sized and colored to be pressed into the panel or trak slots. This gives you the maximum flexibility of relocating them as you desire or your needs change. However, the following situations make it impractical to mount the fixtures on the wall: 1) above cabinets in low ceiling garages because the light would be blocked by the top of the cabinets and 2) adjacent and above rolled up garage doors when the light would be blocked by the open garage door. II Ceiling Mount the Fixtures The solution to both of the above conditions is to ceiling mount the fixtures. The fixtures can be mounted directly to the ceiling joists or mounted off of a GarageTek Ceiling PowerTrak rail. The Ceiling PowerTrak certainly provides the more flexible installation as the fixture can be relocated easily. The steps to installing directly to the joists or from the Ceiling PowerTrak are simple and straight forward.

Step #1: Drill a 1/4 hole in each end of the aluminum slatwall bracket on the fixture. Use these holes to attach a S hook, nut / bolt, clevis, etc. Step #2: Attach the S hook directly to a pair of ring hanger hooks in a PowerTrak rail or to a ring hook screwed into a ceiling joist. For higher ceilings, use a light duty chain to drop the fixture to the height you desire. The power cord can be tucked inside of the PowerTrak rail for a neat appearance. Use cable staples for a professional appearance when mounting directly to the joists. In planning your lighting installation, remember the GarageTek lighting fixtures are designed to be daisy chained. Each fixture has a power cord 12-15 ft long and each fixture has a secondary outlet so the fixtures can be plugged into one another. This allows you to daisy chain the fixtures so they can be all turned on or off thru one switch.
