Co-ordinate the collection and storage of propagation material Overview This standard is for those whose role it is to co-ordinate the collection and storage of propagation material. This includes a wide range of vegetative material derived from stock plants grown within the business. This will require considerable knowledge of the propagation process. You will be working unsupervised and be capable of taking responsibility for propagation. This standard covers the coordination of your own work load, it may in some instances involve coordinating the work of teams. Propagation from vegetative methods is covered in H6 and propagation from seed is covered in H8. It covers the planning, collection and storage of propagation material. 1

Performance criteria You must be able to: P1 assess the risks associated with the site and the required activity P2 P3 P4 P5 P6 P7 P8 P9 ensure the working methods for collecting and storing propagation material are established and clearly communicated plan the timing of collection to maximise the success of the propagation operation and to meet specifications determine the method to be used for collecting the propagation material in accordance with the needs of the plant species and the propagation method identify and establish the availability of resources required for the collection and storage of propagation material ensure equipment is used and maintained in a safe and effective condition establish measures to maintain suitable levels of hygiene and biosecurity establish measures for the recycling or disposal of waste in accordance with legal and organisational requirements identify plants from which material is to be collected in accordance with specifications P10 ensure plant material is handled in a manner which minimises damage and waste P11 ensure the collected material meets the requirements of the specifications and the propagation method P12 co-ordinate suitable facilities for the storage of collected material P13 ensure material is labelled in accordance with specifications P14 ensure appropriate records are completed as required by relevant legislation and the organisation P15 ensure that environmental and health and safety policies and risk assessment requirements are put into practice across your area of responsibility 2

Knowledge and understanding You need to know and understand: K1 K2 K3 K4 K5 K6 K7 K8 K9 how to identify hazards and assess risks how to interpret risk assessments the importance of ensuring that the activity is completed in accordance with specifications the effective and efficient use of resources when carrying out the collection and storage of propagation materials the equipment required for the job and how to ensure that it is used and maintained in a safe and effective condition and stored securely methods of maintaining hygiene and biosecurity and the reasons why it is important the legal and organisational requirements for the handling, transporting and disposal of waste methods for planning the collection of propagation material and factors which must be taken into account the importance of the timing of different propagation activities K10 requirements of the specifications K11 methods of collecting propagation material K12 where and how to obtain information on plants and plant identification K13 the stages of plant development K14 ways in which plant material must be handled and the consequences of not doing so K15 appropriate conditions for the storage of propagation material K16 availability and suitability of facilities for storing the material prior to use K17 length of suitable storage K18 requirements for labelling K19 the importance of maintaining effective communication with those involved in the work K20 appropriate records to be kept and their significance K21 your responsibilities under current environmental and health and safety legislation, codes of practice and company policies 3
