Smoke and Fire Curtains Performance Door sets for security and Fire resistant applications
Introduction The Fire & Smoke curtains are the latest in fire protection systems to be added to the Doors (UK) product range. We have the ability to offer the client a complete package from security to Fire & smoke containment. The dangers of fire, smoke and toxic fumes have become particularly evident in recent years as a result major tragedies involving the loss of life and damage to property. These dangers have greater scope in large Open Plan buildings where the intense heat of fire produces large volumes of lethal smoke and hot, combustible gases which travel at high speeds along ceilings and through ceiling voids. The speed of this wave of smoke and heat is such that people escaping from the fire are rapidly overtaken reducing visibility, increasing panic and leading to disorientation and death. However, Architectural and design considerations increasingly look for Open Plan buildings as the most aesthetic and ergonomic solution to Retail Store, Shopping Mall, Exhibition and Conference centres, Office and other high pedestrian traffic developments. The accepted solution to this dilemma is the Fire & Smoke curtains. Doors (U.K.) Ltd design, manufacture and install and a electrically operated roller which is fitted with a flameproof, woven glass textile curtain. This remains in the its retracted position, flush to the ceiling until it is activated by a signal from the main fire protection system. On receiving the signal the curtains descends to a preset level which forms a smoke compartment which enables any smoke to be extracted. When a smoke curtain is required to deploy in an emergency situation it is probable that the mains supply to the control panel may have already failed and that the cables linking the smoke curtains to the control panel might be damaged. Under these circumstances with no power available the smoke curtain will have to deploy by gravity. For this reason the Fire Curtain is always deployed by gravity and every time the system is tested it is a 100% confirmation of the fail safe operation of the system. A test in which a curtain is powered down under normal test conditions are only proving that they can deploy when powered. This does not confirm an ability to fail safe. Our Fire Curtain is a gravity fail safe Automatic Smoke Curtain system utilizing the latest in electronic technology. Advantages Fire resistant for up to 4 hours Total gravity fail safe system as standard Safe access and escape in the event of fire Versatile Lightweight compact construction enables easy installation without heavy structures significant radiant heat reduction with Enhanced fire and smoke containment
Operation Under normal conditions the curtain is retracted in the head box and is held in position by the electronics contained within a remote enclosure mounted on the motor end of the box. The bottom bar will be resting against the under side of the box or below the box if a stopping bar is installed, the stopping will then rest against the box. In the event of a fire condition or operation of the test key switch the group control panel removes the power to the curtain motors. The curtain descends in a controlled manner under the power of gravity and stops in the lower position when all the fabric is unwound from the roller. When the signal is reset the group control panel re connects the power to the motors which will retract the curtains to the up position. Should the mains power fail to the group control panel the supply is automatically switched to the integral standby battery. The curtain remains in the retracted position for 1 hour (fully loaded system). The curtain will remain fully operational until the battery low voltage cut off facility reads a voltage of 24v, the curtains will then descend under the power of gravity to the operational position. The Fire Curtain system allows the option of a 2 stage descent facility as smoke curtains are sometimes required to stop during descent to allow egress from buildings. A timer and relay circuit is installed within the GCP which is connected to a 24v brake housed in the motor assembly. The brake is operated at a pre determined time after descent to stop the curtain. After the required time limit the brake is de-energized and the curtain will descend to the full operational position under the power of gravity. Two stage descent facility The above panels include two timers which when set allow the smoke/fire curtain to be halted during descent. The curtain will descend for the preset run time and will then be stopped by the operation of the integral brake unit on the roller mechanism. When the chosen delay time has elapsed the brake unit will be de-energized and the curtain will continue on its descent. Both timers commence operation simultaneously, either upon receipt of a fire signal or if the GCP is placed in test mode. The run timer should be set to the time required for the curtain to descend to its delay position. The delay timer should be set to the required period of delay plus the run time. E.g. The curtain is to descend for a time of 10 seconds and then hold at this position for 15 seconds. 1) Set Run Timer to 10 seconds 2) Set Delay Timer to 10 seconds + 15 seconds = 25 seconds The curtain will retract as normal. Features Gravity fail safe operation Current limiting device incorporated, motor limit switches are not required Synchronized motor control circuitry, allowing variable speed control Back EMF controlled speed of descent, separate brake units are not required 24 v operation Control panels can control up to 6 curtain rollers Battery low voltage cut off facility, the curtains descend in a controlled manner.

Specification Norfycurtain Fire Resistant Curtain. The fire curtain is deployed by gravity upon receipt of a fire signal or failure with the alarm system, which ensure a Fail safe system. The system has been tested to BS 476: Part 22 and has achieved a 4 hour rating. Dimensions: Electric operation - opening height up to 6000mm, opening width up to 6000mm for a single curtain. Widths above 6000mm will be manufactured from multiple roller with a 600mm overlap with a common bottom rail Curtain Constructed from 1, 2, 4 ½ Hour rated, Glass cloth fabric with a polymer coated to both sides, tested to BS 476 Parts 6,7, 20 and 22 Bottom Rail The lower edge of the curtain will incorporate a twin inverted powder coated mild steel angle which acts as a weight bar to enable the curtain to un wind upon receipt a fire signal. Performance: 4 hours fire resistance. Arrangement: Vertical Roller Curtain Shutter curtain: Glass cloth fabric with a polymer coated to both sides. Finish as delivered: Galvanised Steel Frame/ Guides: Bottom Rail: Twin inverted powder coated mild steel angle primer finished. Optional Finish: Powder coated finish to guides and bottom rail. Consult with for availability of alternative finishes. Side Guides Galvanised steel guides 100mm deep x 50mm width. Incorporating a fabric retaining system to prevent the fabric pulling out of the guides under pressure from the fire source. Electric Operation The motor assembly is responsible for driving and then stopping the curtain in the normal operational position via a current limiting circuit and providing a controlled speed of descent via a back EMF generation. Control Panel The group control panel can support up to 6 No fire curtains rollers. In normal operation the GCP provides a constant 24v AC supply to the roller under its control. Should a fire condition arise or the test key activated the GCP removes the 24v and the curtains descends under the gravity. Fire Resistance To BS 476: Part 22: 1987. 4 hours fire resistance Test No. 9753 Warrington Test Laboratory. Roller Assembly Enclosed within a 1.2mm galvanised steel head box. The barrel is manufacture from 76mm Diameter tube with 4mm wall, this give support to the curtain fabric and bottom rail. Endplates The curtain assembly is supported by mild steel endplates with mounting angles for fixing to the support structure Product reference: Norfycurtain Fire Resisting Curtain.
