If the shelf projects more than 150mm then the distance between the top of the hearth and the shelf needs to increase by 15mm for every additional 25mm of projection beyond 150mm. FIREGUARD REQUIREMENTS A fireguard complying with BS 8423 should be fitted for the protection of children, the elderly, the infirm and pets. 5

APPLIANCE INSTALLATION UNPACKING THE FIRE Carefully remove the appliance from the carton, taking special care with any ceramic components. Remove all loose item packaging and check for all components which should include: 1 x Firebox with burner assembly 1 x Box containing ceramic components. 1 x Installation and User Instruction manual 1 x Loose parts pack including: 1 x Strip of floor sealing tape 1 x Inlet T connector 1 x Nut & olive for 8mm inlet pipe. 1 x Grommet for rear of firebox 4 x Woodscrews 6 x Fibre/wooden plugs 4 x Eyebolts 2 x Tension cables 2 x Cable adjusters 1 x Foam Seal 2 x Fascia fixing screws 1 x Outlet canopy 1 x Battery 1 x Restrictor plate 1 x Battery (ez-slide model only) GAS CONNECTION A concealed gas connection is recommended. If concealed pipework is required then steps must be taken to extend the supply line so that it enters the firebox through the supply hole at the bottom right hand side. The pipe should run through the supply hole and to the inlet T connector towards the front of the fire. Please ensure that the supply pipework does not encroach on the space required to fit the firebox into the fire opening. The inlet T connector features a valve for isolating the gas supply and a pressure test point. After installation, connect a suitable pressure test gauge to the pressure test point on the inlet T. With the fire lit check that the supply pressure is 20 ±1.5mbar. Disconnect the pressure gauge and check for gas soundness. PREPARING THE APPLIANCE The glass must be removed to gain access to place ceramic components and to remove the burner unit to prepare gas supply connection. To remove the burner unit, follow the steps on the following page. 6

APPLIANCE INSTALLATION PREPARING THE APPLIANCE Disconnect the control linkage by removing the screw indicated by 1 in Fig. 1. Remove the 6 screws indicated by 2 in Fig. 1. Remove the 3 screws indicated by 3 in Fig. 1. Holding the glass firmly in place remove the top and side glass retainers, then carefully lift the glass away and place in a safe area. Remove the 2 screws indicated by 5 in Fig. 2 and then carefully lift the burner from the firebox. Fig. 1 Fit the foam seal to the rear of the firebox side and top flanges. Carefully measure and cut each piece ensuring that it is not overstretched and that there are no gaps where each piece of foam meet. A complete seal must be achieved around the three flanges. INSTALLING THE FIREBOX There are two options of fixing the firebox into the fire opening/fireplace surround. Fig. 2 Option 1 - Front Fixing Offer the firebox into the opening ensuring that the supply pipe is correctly positioned. When the firebox is in the intended position of installation make a mark through the holes indicated on Fig. 3. Carefully remove the firebox and drill and plug the fireplace where previously marked using a correctly sized masonry bit and the fibre plugs supplied. Re-position the firebox into the fireplace and secure using 4 woodscrews, tightening to seal the firebox to the fireplace. Fig. 3 7

APPLIANCE INSTALLATION INSTALLING THE FIREBOX Option 2 - Cable Fixing Using Fig. 4, mark out the four positions indicated on the back of the fire opening. Drill each mark using a suitable masonry bit and fit the fibre plugs supplied. Securely screw the eye bolts into the plugs Position the firebox in front of the fire opening, allowing enough space behind the appliance for access to the fire opening and fitting of the cables. At this stage, if a concealed gas connection is required, feed the supply pipe through the hole at the bottom at the rear of the firebox. Locate the holes to the sides of the convection channel and fit the cables as shown in Fig. 5. Give the cables a sharp pull so that they grip the firebox. Thread the cables through the top eye bolts, then the bottom eyebolts, and then feed them into the holes at the bottom of the back face of the fire box (see Fig. 6). Fig. 4 Fig. 5 Reposition the firebox into the opening and push against the fireplace ensuring a seal against the foam strips on the rear of the firebox flanges. Fit a cable retainer over each cable and, pulling the cables taught, push the retainers into the holes that the cables run through. Tighten the screws in the cable retainers so that they clamp onto the cables. Hand turn the adjustment screws on the retainers to apply tension to the cables. Do not over tighten the cables. Check that there are no gaps around the foam strips. Using the sealing tape supplied, create a seal between the bottom face of the firebox and the fireplace floor. Reposition the burner and secure with the two screws previously removed. Connect the supply line to the appliance. Turn on the gas supply and pressure test the pipework installation for soundness according to current standards. Fig. 6 7

APPLIANCE INSTALLATION FUEL BED ASSEMBLY Take the ceramic coal matrix and place it on top of the ceramic burner (factory-clamped to the burner tray), ensuring that it is pushed to the back of the hot box (see Fig. 7) Next take the onepiece ceramic coal front and gently place it in front of the ceramic burner (see Fig. 8). Fig. 7 Fig. 8 Next, carefully unpack each of the individual coals and familiarise yourself with their appearance before proceeding to coal placement. There are : 4 x A 2 x B 2 x C 2 x D 2 x E 2 x F 2 x G 8

APPLIANCE INSTALLATION Ensuring that neither coals are touching each other, take the five coals as indicated in Fig. 9 below, and position them using the five notches in the one-piece front coal as locators. Fig. 7 Fig. 9 Next, take the four coals indicated and position as shown in Fig. 10 below. Fig. 10 9

APPLIANCE INSTALLATION Next, take the two coals indicated and position as shown in Fig. 11 below. Fig. 11 Next, take the five coals indicated and position as shown in Fig. 12 below. Fig. 12 Only use the coals that are supplied with this appliance. If replacement coals are required, use only a full genuine replacement set. Reconnect the slider arm to the gas control pivot. Refit the glass and the glass retainers by reversing the steps taken to remove it earlier (see page 7 for details). Fit the supplied battery. 10

APPLIANCE INSTALLATION LIGHTING THE APPLIANCE Open the gas isolation valve. Push the control lever fully down to the P position and hold there until the pilot lights. Hold for a further 10 seconds to allow a stable flame. Release the control lever and it will automatically raise to the LO position. The fire is now at minimum heat setting. Lift the control lever up to the HI position. You will feel a positive location check when the lever reaches this setting. Lift the control lever fully up to the O position to extinguish the pilot and main burner. The appliance is now turned off. FLUE RESTRICTOR The appliance is supplied with a front fixing flue restrictor. Generally the restrictor is not required but if the flue is found to be pulling excessively then it can be fitted by holding the restrictor by the long tab and inserting it into the top vent of the convection outlet. With your other hand, use a long screwdriver and screw the restrictor to the rear of the firebox. See Fig. 13. Fig. 13 12

APPLIANCE INSTALLATION SPILLAGE TEST 1 Close all of the doors and window in the room of the appliance. 2 Ignite the appliance and set to HI position. 3 After 5 minutes hold a smoke match inside the fire. This should be positioned approximately 20mm inside the top opening at a distance of approximately 75mm from the side (see Fig. 14). In a successful installation all of the smoke should be drawn directly into the flue. If in doubt, wait a further 10 minutes and repeat the test. 4 If spillage still occurs and the flue restrictor is fitted then wait for the fire to cool, remove it and perform the spillage test again. 5 If spillage still occurs then there may be a problem with the flue. Disconnect the appliance and seek expert advice. 6 If the spillage test is successful then open all internal doors in the room. Keep all external doors and windows closed. Re-test again for spillage as instructed above. If there s an extractor fan in the vicinity of the appliance then test again with the extractor fan turned on and all interconnecting doors open. USER GUIDE IF YOU SMELL GAS Turn off gas supply immediately. Extinguish all flames. Do not smoke. Do not operate any electrical switches (on or off). Open doors and windows to ventilate the area. Call the Gas Emergency Service - consult your local telephone directory for information. GENERAL INFORMATION In the United Kingdom it is law that all gas appliances are fitted by a competent person in accordance with the most up to date edition of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations. Failure to install the appliance correctly could lead to prosecution. The installation must also be in accordance with all relevant parts of the Local and National Building Regulations, all relevant code of practice, and all applicable requirements of the following British Standards. The appliance serial number can be located on the data badge which is positioned under the coal tray. If the chimney was used for solid fuel prior to installation of this appliance then it should be swept. A fireguard complying with BS 8423 should be fitted for the protection of children, the elderly, the infirm and pets. The convection air comes out of the fire underneath the canopy. The canopy therefore gets very hot and should be treated as a working surface. The appliance can be installed below a combustible shelf as long as there is a minimum distance of 750mm from the top of the hearth and the shelf does not project more than 150mm. If the shelf projects more than 150mm then the distance between the top of the hearth and the shelf needs to increase by 15mm for every additional 25mm of projection beyond 150mm. In the UK, purpose made ventilation is not normally required for this appliance except in new build houses. However, if spillage is detected during commissioning of the appliance, this may mean there is insufficient ventilation. Additional ventilation may then be required. In the ROI, it will be necessary to refer to I.S. 813 issued by the National Standards Authority of Ireland. 16

USER GUIDE Any air vent must not be restricted. If the appliance is fitted to a wall without a fire surround then any wall covering must be non combustible. Soft wall coverings such as wallpaper, blown vinyl are easily affected by heat and shouldn't be used unless a fire surround is fitted. Do not add extra ceramic pieces to the appliance as this can result in incorrect combustion. If any of the ceramic components become damaged then the complete ceramic set must be replaced with genuine manufacturer s parts. Do not burn paper or other materials on the appliance. Do not use the appliance if the glass is cracked, broken or missing. Ensure that furniture and other combustible items are kept well clear of the fire. Never use aerosols or other flammable products near the fire when its in use. Always allow sufficient time after use for the fire to cool before cleaning. Servicing should be carried out a least once a year by a competent person. Failure to do so will void the appliance warranty. Please read the Servicing & Maintenance section of this manual for further information. If after installation, any home improvements are carried out such as installation of double glazing or extractor fans in adjoining rooms, etc. then a further spillage test should be carried out by a competent person. 17

USER GUIDE OPERATING PROCEDURE The control lever is located to the top right hand side of the fire/fascia. The fire is now at the maximum heat setting. The lever can be moved between the low and high positions to achieve your desired heat setting. Lift the control lever fully up to the O position to extinguish the pilot and main burner. The appliance is now turned off. It is recommended that for optimum efficiency the flue is primed for 20 minutes of operation. This can be achieved by running the appliance in its high (maximum heat) setting. If, for any reason, the fire extinguishes or is turned off then wait 3 minutes for the fire to cool before attempting to re ignite. REPLACING THE BATTERY The appliance requires one 9V PPS battery and is located behind the ash pan cover, under the fuel bed. If the battery needs replacing ensure that the + and - positions are aligned correctly. CERAMIC FUEL BED Cleaning of the ceramic coals and fuel bed is not recommended as they are fragile and my break. Light coatings of soot will be burnt off during normal operation of the fire. Do not expose any of the ceramic parts to water or cleaning agents. Damaged components must be replaced and can be ordered directly from the manufacturer. The address can be found on the rear page of this manual. If the ceramic components require replacing this should only be done by a competent person and in accordance with this manual. 18

USER GUIDE SPILLAGE SAFETY SYSTEM For safety, this appliance is fitted with an oxygen sensitive pilot system. This will cut off the gas supply to the appliance if the oxygen level in the room falls below its normal level. If this happens it usually indicates that there is a problem with the flue system. The fire must not be used and the problem corrected by a competent person. This device is not a substitute for an independently mounted carbon monoxide detector. CLEANING Ensure that the fire is cool before attempting any cleaning. Clean only the trims, fascia and metal parts. Do not clean the ceramic components. Use a lightly damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or marks from the metalwork. FASCIA This appliance can be used with several different Vision Fires fascia's or frets. For full instructions on how to fit them please refer to the guide that is supplied with them. Any fascia or fret to be used must conform to the following dimensions (Fig. 13). MINIMUM OPEN AREA OF FRET = 11,000mm² MINIMUM OPEN TOTAL OPEN AREA OF FRET & ASH PAN COVER COMBINED = 16,000mm² MAX HEIGHT 220MM Fig. 13 MINIMUM OPEN AREA OF ASH PAN COVER = 3,300mm² 19
