2. Safety Instructions The following instructions to be followed before, during and after work: This instruction manual to be read completely before initial start-up. If strictly followed, no danger should occur. This machine must only be run by qualified adult persons (firemen) who are fully familiar with possible risks. Directives for Liquid Blasters (ZH 1/406) and operation instructions Working with Liquid Blasters (BGV D 15) as well as instructions of the fire-brigade to be followed. The machine is not suitable for unattended operation and must be operated according to specification. Protective clothing to be worn. The water jet emerging from the spray pistol has a dangerous cutting effect. Therefore the water jet must never be directed onto persons, animals or electrical installations in a distance of less than 1 m. It must never be used for cleaning of clothes, footwear and the like. Be aware of torque and recoil. Ensure stable foothold. The max. allowed pressure which is stated on the type plate must not be exceeded. The safety/control valve opens, if the max. operating pressure is exceeded by more than 10 % and returns the water back into the suction side of the high pressure pump. The safety/control valve is workshop-set and sealed. Adjustment must not be changed. Indoor operation of combustion engines is forbidden, unless proper ventilation and exhaust gas evacuation is guaranteed. Carbon monoxide is lethal. Unsuitable respectively defective high pressure hoses often cause severe accidents during operation. Therefore high pressure hoses to be carefully inspected before start-up and replaced by original OERTZEN equipment in case of damage. Use of other than original OERTZEN equipment results in expiry of the EC Declaration of Conformity, as well as of product liability and warranty. Used or damaged high pressure hoses must never be repaired and reused but to be replaced by original OERTZEN equipment. Extinguishing pistols with delayed closing mechanism must not be used because of risk of injuries. Lever in open position must never be blocked or fixed in any way. Use of extinguishing pistols of less than 750 mm length is prohibited. The machine must not be run in areas jeopardized by fire or explosions. During operation at filling stations Technical for flammable liquids (TfbF) to be observed. Consumables to be handled throroughly according to technical rules; safety and environmental regulations to be observed. When opening the machine in case of malfunctions or emergency, switch off by means of the ignition switch. 4

Secure the machine against moving. It is equipped with a parking brake which must be set during working. During loading hoisting device to be fastened properly at jack rings. Ensure balanced load distribution. Repair work in the high pressure section of the machine (pump, hoses, piping) only to be carried out by qualified personnel. Exhaust gas evacuation area is getting hot. Do not touch! After work the machine to be locked and secured against unauthorized/accidental operation by means of the safety lever at the extinguishing pistol. Minimum extinguishing distance for electrical installations is 1 m. Only to be used up to max. 1000 V. Only foam agents approved by OERTZEN to be used. Keep away from eyes. Never unreel extinguishing hose while hand crank is swung out. Keep your hands out of the working area of the hand crank. Keep a safety distance and take care that clothes cannot be clutched by the crank. In foam no breathing possible risk of suffocation. Use of equipment and/or consumables which is not delivered or expressively approved by OERTZEN results in expiry of the EC Declaration of Conformity, as well as of product liability and warranty. This operation manual describes the operation of the HDL 250 WS basic design. If OERTZEN FIRE-TEC accessories are used, refer to extra manual which is attached hereto. 5

3. Unit Description The high pressure fire extinguisher HDL is an electrically independent machine to extinguish fire by means of water atomised under high pressure with the option of foam agent dosing. The particular efficiency of the extinguisher is a result of atomised water at an operating pressure of up to 200 bar (depending on model). By atomisation the water/foam agent surface is extremely enlarged so effecting rapid evaporation. The high efficiency when extinguishing burning solids (class A) is achieved by the synergetic effect of heat extraction out of the fire by evaporation and reduction of the oxygen concentration by the steam. The fact that damage by waste water is avoided to a great extent, is most advantageous. The rapid attack device allows the quick roll-over from water mist to heavy foam whenever required. The high pressure hose is steel-reinforced, heat-resistant and extremely light and flexible, so allowing the rapid attack within a radius of 50 m. The options of extinguishing with pure water respectively with foam agent solution allow extinguishing of burning solids (class A) and/or burning liquids (class B) as follows: Extinguishing Agent class A class B - high pressure water jet, atomised - heavy foam - net water mist The HDL fire extinguisher mainly consists of a robust high pressure inline plunger pump driven by a low emission four-stroke V-engine. In order to prevent the motor from dry-running a low oil level cut-out is installed, which stops the machine in case of poor oil level. The water is filled into an integrated tank (depending on model). The high pressure pump sucks it off and boosts it to required working pressure. Downstreams of the pump a workshop-set and sealed safety/control valve is arranged which opens as soon as the operating pressure is exceeded by more than 10 % and directs the water which cannot be taken by the nozzle back into the suction line of the pump. Turning the support and roll-over handle allows the quick roll-over from atomised high pressure water to net water mist/heavy foam (fire class A respectively B). The machine is equipped with a protective circulation safety stop. When closing the extinguishing pistol, the safety/control valve opens and directs circulating water back into the suction line. When releasing the extinguishing pistol again, the adjusted pressure is generated immediately so that work can be continued without delay. Depending on the individual requirements of the user, there are tailor-made designs available for HDL 170 S and HDL 200. A wide range of accessories is available for HDL extinguishers. Contact your OERTZEN-dealer for details. 6

5. Start-up/Shut-down Mounting/Initial Installation The HDL to be mounted in a way that all components can easily be reached. The rapid-attack-device to be easily accessible and the hose quickly to be reeled-off. The safe exhaust evacuation to be ensured. Depending on the structural conditions in the vehicle, special exhaust outlet are available (hoses). Proper ventilation to be guaranteed. The HDL is fixed via vibration dampers (not included in scope of supply) onto the vehicle structure. The vibration dampers avoid the transmission of vibrations to the vehicle. Extinguisher components must be installed in a way that they do not prevent e.g. shutters from moving. (Only for models with electric start optional) If the high pressure fire extinguisher should not be started by the unit s battery but by the vehicle battery, correct polarization and properly dimensioned and arranged cabling to be guaranteed. Required distribution voltage 12 V. Supply between HDL and separate water tank is effected by suction hoses (included in scope of supply). Hose lines and connections to be properly tightened. The installation of a 50 m strainer upstreams of the supply lines is recommended. In order to easily reel up the high pressure hose by means of the hand crank, required clearance to be guaranteed (approx. 200 mm). In order to avoid germ formation/algae growth in the water storage tanks disinfectant to be added (e.g. Desalgin of Bayrol, 5 ml/100 l of water). ATTENTION: Only tap water to be used! 11

Before Start-up: Operating manual and motor manufacturer s instructions to be read completely and strictly followed. In order to guarantee readiness for use and trouble-free operation, check the following before and after every start-up: General condition of the machine (screwed connections, protection caps, seals, etc.). Fill water tank. Only clean water to be used. Flush supply hose before filling the tank. Fill foam agent tank. Fill fuel tank with petrol (min. Octane 86). Check high pressure hoses/hose lines for damage. Air supply, fresh air grill must not be covered. Check correct oil level of the high pressure pump (sight glass/dip stick) as well as correct oil level of engine (dip stick). Only use oil qualities expressively approved by OERTZEN. High pressure pump: OSP special pump oil, motor: OSM special motor oil. Check Oil level of reduction gear (sight glass/dip stick), use OSP special pump oil (only HDL 200). Check pump/pump connections for leaks. Check water inlet strainer, clean/replace if needed. Machine only to be run horizontally (+/- 20 ). Machine must under no circumstance be run with disconnected battery, otherwise severe damage may be the result. In order to extend the lifetime of the motor, warm it up upon start-up. After work let it run out to cool it down. In order to guarantee proper function and trouble-free operation, the following checks to be carried out during working: Observe pressure variations. Observe excessive exhaust gas formation. Observe leaks at high pressure pump, hose pipes, connections. Observe level of water storage tank and foam agent tank. Observe unnormal noise. In case of malfunctions immediately stop machine, eleminate cause according to chapter Trouble Shooting, call qualified service. 12

Operation This operation manual describes the operation of the HDL basic design. If OERTZEN FIRE-TEC accessories are used, refer to extra manual which is attached hereto. Start engine as follows Observe motor manufacturer's instructions: Before starting engine, open ball valve (34), close after engine has started. In order to ease starting of engine, put fire assault device into position "foam" and open extinguishing pistol for depressurisation purposes. Start procedure cold engine Pull out choke (8). Turn gas pedal (9) into position "full load". Release extinguishing pistol. Put stop switch (15) into position "0". Take handle and carefully pull out until engagement, then strongly pull out in order to start engine. Put handle back into initial position. Start procedure hot engine Do not pull out choke (8). Turn gas pedal (9) into position "3/4 load". Release extinguishing pistol. Put stop switch (15) into position "0". Take handle and carefully pull out until engagement, then strongly pull out in order to start engine. Put handle back into initial position. If the engine in operational state and at correct oil level does not start after several attempts, most likely the oil pressure is poor. In this case disconnect the cable of oil pressure switch (at the male threaded flange of the engine oil filter) upon start-up. As soon as the motor has started, cable of oil pressure switch to be reconnected, as otherwise the low oil level cut-out is out of function. Start procedure electric start (optional) Choke (8) adjustment as described before. Gas pedal (9) adjustment as described before. Release extinguishing pistol. Turn ignition key (33) into position "Start", until engine starts. Starter to be activated for max. 10 seconds. Too many start attempts without success may damage the starter. After Motor has started: Determine fire class at foam agent dosing valve (11) Vertical position class A Horizontal position class B Extinguishing with DUPLEX Fire Assault Device (Standard) 13

By turning the DUPLEX fire assault device the following extinguishing modes are possible: Fire Class A: Spray mode (high pressure water mist or, by adding foam agent, net water mist). In case of temperatures below freezing point, particularly note: The low amounts of water in the high pressure hose may freeze and damage the machine. Therefore work should not be interrupted unless fire is extinguished. In order to guarantee readiness for use in case of frost during fire watch a continuous low water flow should be ensured as follows: Engine to be in idle running mode Foam agent dosing valve (11) to be closed. Pump pressure to be reduced to a minimum by turning the pressure regulating valve (12) counter-clockwise. Stop valve extinguishing pistol (23) to be opened, so allowing a low water flow emerging out of the atomisation nozzle (28) at low pressure. Ensure sufficient water supply. After work Foam agents are corrosive. Residues have therefore to be flushed out of the system as follows (keep in sequences): Start engine and keep it running at moderate speed. Remove foam agent suction hose from foam agent tank and put it into a vessel with clean water. Open foam agent dosing valve (11) so that the hose will be flushed with water. Turn support/roll-over handle (26) downward, open extinguishing pistol (23), so that the liquid emerges from the atomisation nozzle (28). Close extinguishing pistol (23) after 10 seconds and alternately open and close it approx. 10 times so that pump, hoses and valves are cleaned from foam agent residues. Open extinguishing pistol again and keep water running out of the atomisation nozzle (28) for 30 seconds so that the complete pipe system is cleaned from foam agent residues. Afterwards, close extinguishing pistol, turn support/ roll-over handle (26) into position foam, open stop valve on extinguishing pistol for a few seconds so that the foam nozzle is cleaned from foam agent residues. Close foam agent dosing valve (11). Run engine in idle running mode for 2 minutes. Stop engine. Release extinguishing pistol (23) in order to de-pressurise the system. In order to avoid germ formation/biological growth in the water storage tank the water to be mixed with a disinfectant, e.g. Desalgin make BAYROL (5 ml/125 l of water). Final Steps 16

Lock extinguishing pistol in order to avoid accidental activation. Carry out frost protection as described on pages 19/20. Place high pressure extinguishing hose in a straight line and check for damage. For cleaning purposes pull high pressure hose through a moist cloth during reeling up. Prepare machine for next action (see Maintenance and Care ). 17

6. Maintenance and Care Any machine is only as reliable as maintenance is carried out. The following maintenance work to be carried out in regular short intervals: If maintenance is not carried out according to below mentioned instructions, warranty will expire. Checks to be carried out after work: Check general condition of the machine (connections, seals, etc.) Check water strainer and replace if necessary. Check water tank, clean and refill, if necessary. Fill fuel tank with petrol (min. 86 octane). Check high pressure hose for damage and replace, if needed. Air supply/fresh air grill must not be covered. Check oil levels of engine, reduction gear and high pressure pump. Check pump/pump connections whether leaking. Disconnect extinguishing pistol at the swivel and slightly lubricate pivot and seal rings. Reconnect extinguishing pistol hand tight by means of the hand nut. Maintenance Work in Four Weeks Intervals: Oil change engine/reduction gear/pump needed (operating hours)? Individual checks as per After Work. Battery maintenance as per manufacturer s instructions. Check acid level every week, refill distilled water, if needed (only for model with electric start). Maintenance Work every Year: Engine Only OERTZEN OSM special motor oil to be used for the engine, otherwise warranty will expire. Further maintenance instructions on motor are laid down in engine manufacturer s manual. First oil change after 5 operating hours, latest 12 months after delivery. Further oil changes after every 50 operating hours, at least once per year. High Pressure Pump First oil change after 50 operating hours. Further oil changes minimum every year. If oil is getting mikly by condensed water, stop machine immediately and change oil. If oil is getting milky again, change all seals and packings. 18

Reduction Gear (HDL 200) Oil changes minimum every year. Only OERTZEN OSP special pump oil to be used for the reduction gear and the high pressure pump, otherwise warranty will expire. Fuel Tank Contents of fuel tank to be changed every year. Flush tank. Never store fuel in open vessels. Never use matured fuel. Further Important Notes: Readiness for Use If maintenance instructions laid down in this manual are disregarded, readiness for use is not guaranteed. Warranty Warranty will expire in case of misuse of the machine, incorrect handling and operation, poor maintenance. 19

Frost Protection I. High Pressure Pump / Suction Line Frost protection of the entire water system is of vital interest, as otherwise heavy damage and serious risks during operation will be the result. The best frost protection method is to store the machine in a frostprotected area. If the unit will be exposed to freezing temperatures during transport/storage and there is a risk that high pressure pump and/or suction line will freeze, carry out frost protection as follows: a. Fill approx. 10 l consisting of a 2 : 1 mixture of water and a commercial anti-freeze (e.g. Glysantin) in a separate vessel and feed it into the system via the high pressure pump (5). b. Losen swivel (24) on extinguishing pistol (23) and remove fire assault device. c. Start motor and let run at low speed, adjust pressure regulating valve (12) to a low value (counter-clockwise). d. Open stop valve (23) so allowing the high pressure pump to suck in the anti-freeze. As soon as the anti-freeze emerges from the extinguishing pistol, the emerging stream to be directed into the anti-freeze vessel (Frost Protection II: into the water tank filled with anti-freeze liquid) so that the anti-freeze liquid is circulating through the system. f. Open and close the stop valve (23) 10 times so that the entire pump system is filled with the anti-freeze liquid. g. Keep anti-freeze liquid in circulation for further 2 minutes, then stop motor. De-pressurise high pressure section by releasing the stop valve on extinguishing pistol. Re-connect high fire assault device with extinguishing pistol, reel up high pressure hose, lock hose reel, lock stop valve of extinguishing pistol, insert and lock extinguishing pistol into holder (20). 20

Frost Protection II. High Pressure Fire Extinguisher/Water Tank If the unit with full water tank will be exposed to freezing temperatures during transport/storage, there is a risk that the entire unit will freeze. Frost protection can be carried out by adding calcium chloride scales CaCl 2 77/80 %, however the following limits to be observed: Foam agent AFFF 3 % is most suitable for extinguishing class A and B fires. If CaCl 2 is added, be aware that foam expansion rates at decreasing temperatures will significantly drop. Better results are achieved when using AFFF 1 % at higher concentration instead. Fire extinguishers which are frost-protected by means of CaCl 2 must not be used to extinguish burning electric installations/cables, due to risk of electric shock. Calcium chloride scales 77/80 % CaCl 2 are available locally. For further details contact the manufacturer of the fire extinguisher. We will provide detailed frost protection instructions on request. 21
