SITUATION Higher Ash Farm is situated within a quiet tucked away semirural location no more than 1.7 miles from Dartmouth. An historic town that sits on the mouth of the River Dart, arguably one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. The Dart is navigable for about 10 miles up to the market town of Totnes passing by unspoilt villages and countryside and the wine estate at Sharpham. The town dates back to the 1100s and today has a population of just over 5,000. Many of the streets and houses date back to Elizabethan times and are a patchwork of narrow lanes and stone stairways. There are many ancient listed buildings including the Butterwalk and the Cherub Inn and the quayside of Bayards Cove marks the spot from which the Pilgrim Fathers sailed in 1620. Dartmouth, today, is a vibrant place to live with many good shops including branches of Boots, Marks and Spencer Food and a Sainsbury s on the outskirts. Local produce, particularly seafood and dairy products are abundant in specialist shops and delicatessens. Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury etc offer home delivery. Dartmouth is a popular destination for visitors, many arriving by boat. There is a wide range of restaurants ranging from fine dining at Mitch Tonks Seahorse to a proper French bakery and cafe. Two golf courses are close by, just outside Dartmouth and at Churston. There is a sports centre and a new indoor swimming pool which opened in 2016. The Flavel Art Centre is open every day and provides an extensive programme of theatre, music, film and regular live links with the National Theatre, Royal Opera House etc. The Centre is the home of numerous clubs ranging from NADFAS, U3A to bridge, pilates and dance. Dartmouth has three marinas and boat moorings are available from the harbour authority. Popular destinations are the Channel Islands, Scilly Isles, France as well as the Devon and Cornish ports and, of course, the river itself. Blackpool Sands beach is just over a mile away from Higher Ash Farm. Walkers have the choice of the South West Coastal path with wonderful views along the coast or they can enjoy the very different scenery on Dartmoor. Totnes is about 14 miles away and is a popular shopping destination. There are regular intercity trains to London, the Midlands and up to Scotland. Exeter offers extensive shopping including a recently opened branch of John Lewis. Exeter airport is about one hour away and there are flights to destinations throughout the UK and mainland Europe.
