IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS Aarm-Initiating Device: A device which, when actuated, initiates an aarm. Such devices, depending on their type, can be operated manuay or actuated automaticay in response to smoke, fame, heat or water-fow. (Exampes: pu stations, heat detectors, smoke detectors, sprinker fow switches, etc.) Aarm-Notification Appiance: A device that produces an audibe and/or visua aarm signa in response to a fire emergency. (Exampes: horns, bes, chimes, fashing ights, etc.) Annunciator: An eectricay operated visua signaing device having one or more amps or LEDs to dispay the status of the fire aarm system. End-of-Line Device: A device used to terminate a supervised circuit. Initiating-Device Circuit: A circuit to which automatic or manua initiating devices are connected. Loca Energy Master Box: A municipa master box that uses eectrica energy from the protected premises to energize its eectromagnetic tripping mechanism. See definition for shunt master box. Notification-Appiance Circuit: A circuit to which notification appiances are connected. Power-Limited Pane: A fire aarm pane that can be connected to power-imited fire aarm cabe. Shunt Master Box: A municipa master box that uses eectrica energy from the municipa fire aarm system to energize its eectromagnetic tripping mechanism. See definition for oca energy master box. Zone: A designated area of a buiding. Commony, zones within a buiding are annunciated to aid in ocating a fire. 2

SYSTEM INTRODUCTION The 4001-9403 and -9404 are four-zone, eectricay supervised, power-imited fire aarm panes. The 4007-9403 connects to a 12OVAC, 60 Hz source. The 4007-9404 connects to a 220/24OVAC, 50 Hz source. Each system contains one notification appiance circuit, battery standby power, and battery charger. The systems provide an eary warning evacuation signa for buiding occupants if a fire occurs. The systems consist of: Aarm-initiating devices - Smoke detectors, heat detectors, pu stations, etc. A/arm-notification appiances - Horns, bes, and visua units. A contro pane. Each system may aso contain optiona features. Since the -9403 and -9404 operate the same except for input power, we wi discuss system operation as it appies to the -9403. Aarm-initiating devices are instaed in the buiding and connected to one of four initiating-device circuits on the contro pane. Each initiating-device circuit is given a zone number (1, 2, 3, or 4). Thus, the various areas of the buiding can be designated as zone 1, zone 2, zone 3, or zone 4. The contro pane monitors each zone for troubes and aarms. Aarm-notification appiances are ocated throughout the buiding to provide acceptabe sound eves. These appiances are connected to a notification-appiance circuit on the contro pane. The contro pane activates the notification appiances from a centra ocation. You operate the system using the LED indicators and switches on the contro pane. When an aarm or troube condition exists, the pane LEDs indicate the ocation and type of condition. Red LEDs indicate an aarm condition when on. Amber LEDs indicate a troube condition when on. Switches aow you to interact with the system in various ways (see Operating Instructions on Page 5). A diagram of a typica system is shown in Figure 1. 3

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS INTRODUCTION: The 4001 Fire Aarm System provides audibe and visua indications during aarm conditions. When an aarm condition occurs, the system activates the notification appiances and fashes appropriate aarm LEDs on the contro pane. The system s notification appiances operate unti you acknowedge the a/arm or reset the system. You do two things when you acknowedge an aarm condition: You sience the notification appiances. You change the fashing LEDs on the contro pane to a steady iumination. Note: If the system has been programmed to incude certain options (see Page 6, Note 3), you cannot immediatey sience the notification appiances or reset the system. The system has resound capabiity. If - after an aarm has been acknowedged - another aarm occurs on another zone, the notification appiances wi operate again. The system can aso be set up for aarm verification, which essentiay verifies that a smoke detector is indeed in aarm. (See description of aarm verification on Page 8 for detais). The system constanty checks for eectrica troubes (opens, shorts, grounds, abnorma city connections, power oss, ow battery votage, etc.). If a troube condition occurs, the tone device on the pane sounds and the appropriate troube LEDs iuminate to indicate the type of troube. The system contains the foowing LED indicators (Figure 2) and switches (Figure 3). ALARM - THE RESPECTIVE ZONE ALARM LED IS ON WHEN AN ALARM CONDITION EXISTS IN ANY OF THE ZONES. TROUBLE - THE RESPECTIVE ZONE TROUBLE LED IS ON WHEN AN OPEN EXISTS IN ANY OF THE INITIATING DEVICE CIRCUITS. SIGNAL TROUBLE - ON WHEN SHORT OR OPEN IN A NOTIFICATION-APPLIANCE CIRCUIT OCCURS. ANNUNCIATOR TROUBLE - ON WHEN OPEN IN ANY ANNUNCIATOR LINE OCCURS OR WHEN ANNUNCIATOR LED FAILS. SYSTEM TROUBLE - ON WHEN ANY TROUBLE LED IS ON. IF ON AND OTHER TROUBLE INDICATORS ARE OFF, INDICATES AN OPEN IN CITY CIRCUIT OR A REMOTE ACK SWITCH IN THE ON POSITION. TONE DEVICE - ON FOR ABNORMAL SYSTEM CONDITIONS. / AC PbWER - ON WHEN AC POWER IS ON. / GROUND TROUBLE - ON WHEN ANY CIRCUIT SHORTS TO EARTH. POWER TROUBLE - ON FOR NO OR LOW INPUT VOLTAGE, LOW BATERY VOLTAGE OR WHEN BATERIES ARE DISCONNECTED. System Indicators FIGURE 2 5

CITY DISCONNECT - WHEN SET TO THE DOWN POSITION, CITY IS DISCONNECTED FOR TEST PURPOSES OR SYSTEM MAINTENANCE. TROUBLE SILENCE - WHEN SET TO THE DOWN POSITION, TONE DEVICE IS SILENCED DURING TROUBLE CONDITION. AFTER TROUBLE CONDITION CLEARS, TONE DEVICE WILL SOUND UNTIL SWITCH IS SET BACK TO THE UP POSITION. ACKNOWLEDGE (ACK) - WHEN PRESSED, ALARM- NOTIFICATION APPLIANCES ARE SILENCED AND ZONE ALARM INDICATORS CHANGE FROM A FLASHING CONDITION TO A STEADY ILLUMINATION. SYSTEM RESET - WHEN PRESSED, RESETS SYSTEM FOLLOWING AN ALARM CONDITION. Troube Condition: 0 Tone device is sounding a steady tone. One or more amber indicators are on. Aarm Condition: The notification appiances throughout the buiding are operating. One or more red ALARM indicators are fashing indicating the zone(s) reporting the aarm. HOW TO OPERATE THE PANEL DURING AN ALARM CONDITION: Important: Consuit oca code authorities for specific actions to be taken during an aarm condition. When appropriate, unock and open the pane door. To sience notification appiances, press the ACK (acknowedge) switch (Fig. 3). Notes: 1. Upon pressing the ACKNOWLEDGE switch, any red indicator that was fashing changes to a steady iumination. 2. if another aarm is reported from another zone, the notification appiances operate again and the red indicator representing the new zone in aarm fashes (unti the new aarm is acknowedged). 3. The foowing options wi affect the acknowedge feature as foows: Coded Input On Zone 1 - notification appiances cannot be sienced when zone 1 is in aarm; however, fashing indicators change to a steady iumination when acknowedged. (Notification appiances sience automaticay upon code competion.) Sience Inhibit - notification appiances cannot be sienced unti the specified time period has eapsed (1 or 3 minutes). WaterfowSprinker - notification appiances cannot be sienced if water is fowing in the sprinker system. 6

HOW TO RESET THE FIRE ALARM SYSTEM FOLLOWING AN ALARM CONDITION: When the aarm situation has been ceared, restore or repace a affected aarm-initiating devices (pu stations and detectors), if required, in accordance with the instructions provided with each device. Press the SYSTEM RESET switch (Fig. 3) unti LEDs iuminate. Note: The foowing options wi affect the RESET feature as foows: Sience Inhibit - you cannot RESET the system unti the specified time period has eapsed. WaterfowSprinker - you cannot RESET the system if water is fowing in the sprinker system. HOW TO OPERATE THE PANEL WHEN WATER IS FLOWING IN THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM (OPTIONAL): When water is fowing in the sprinker system, the foowing indications exist: The sprinker ALARM (ZONE 3) red indicator is fashing. The notification appiances are operating. After the fire has been extinguished exist: and the water to the sprinker system has been shut off, the foowing indications The sprinker ALARM (ZONE 3) red indicator is on steady. The tamper switch ALARM (ZONE 4) red indicator is on steady (indicating that the water to the sprinker system has been shut off). The notification appiances are sti operating. 6 The tone device is sounding a sow puse (indicating that the water to the sprinker system has been shut off). If the water to the sprinker system has been shut off, proceed as foows: At the pane, press the ACK switch (Fig. 3) notification appiances are sienced, the sprinker ALARM (ZONE 3) red indicator turns off, the tone device continues to sound a sow puse, and the tamper switch ALARM (ZONE 4) indicator remains on). Note: Tone device cannot be sienced when water to the sprinker system has been shut off. Restore or repace sprinker heads in accordance with the instructions provided with the devices. Restore water to sprinker system in accordance with the instructions provided with the sprinker system (this causes the tamper switch ALARM (ZONE 4) indicator to fash and the tone device to puse rapidy). Press the RESET switch (Fig. 3) unti LEDs iuminate (system returns to its norma condition). Note: Unti the sprinker system is fuy recharged, water-fow may be detected by the pane and the fire aarm system may go into aarm again. Therefore, you may have to repeat this procedure severa times whie recharging the sprinker system.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF TROUBLE: Notify appropriate personne. (If the system is connected to the city, notify the fire department monitoring faciity.) Unock and open pane door. If tone device is sounding, set TROUBLE SILENCE switch (Fig. 3 on page 6) to its down position. Note: When the troube has ceared, the tone device wi sound again as a reminder to set the TROUBLE SILENCE switch back to its norma position. Corrective Actions Observe TROUBLE indicators and perform the corrective action outined in Tabe 1 (page 9). When the troube cears, set TROUBLE SILENCE switch to its NORMAL (up) position. If troube is on the pane s circuit board, contact your oca Simpex Branch Office (isted in the Yeow Pages). Important: Any attempt to repace any components on the pane s circuit board voids the warranty. CAUTION: 24VDC exists at contro pane circuit board. This votage may cause damage to equipment during fuse repacement, resistance measurements, or wire checks. When performing these activities, ensure that the battery jumper (white wire) is disconnected from the battery and that a AC power is removed from the system s pane and peripheras. When repacement or checks are compete, restore power (AC power first then batteries) and press RESET switch unti the zone LEDs iuminate. Note: When checking a suspected circuit, remove the circuit from the pane terminas and refer to the Buiding Wiring Checkout Procedure on page 20 and the system wiring diagram (841-610) provided with the pane. ALARM VERIFICATION FEATURE (OPTIONAL) The 4001 Fire Aarm System can be programmed for aarm verification (see SYSTEM PROGRAMMING, p. 30). Aarm verification works ony with Simpex smoke detectors. This feature requires the verification of any aarm initiated by a smoke detector, but aows contact devices (heat detectors and manua stations) residing in the same zone to initiate aarms upon activation. The feature works as foows: a. If a smoke detector senses an aarm, the 4001 starts a 30-second timer, but otherwise ignores the aarm. b. If, during the 30 seconds, no contact device in any zone (or smoke detector in another zone) activates, the zone enters a 15second reset cyce. c. Foowing the reset cyce, the 4001 enters a 120-second confirmation period. If, during this period, the smoke detector re-aarms (or another smoke detector in the same zone initiates an aarm) the 4001 aarms immediatey. d. If no aarms occur during the 120-second confirmation period, the 4001 automaticay returns to norma operation. Notes: 1. If, at any time during the above time period, a smoke detector in another zone (or contact device in any zone) activates, the 4001 aarms immediatey. 2. If Zone 1 is used with the coded input option, then aarm verification wi not work on Zone 1. 3. If Zones 3 and 4 use the sprinker/waterfow options, then aarm verification wi not work on Zones 3 and 4.

System continuousy indicates an aarm condition after a SYSTEM RESET and no fire condition exists. System fais to initiate an aarm when an aarm-initiating device is activated. Check system s 120VAC circuit breaker at the buiding s power distribution box. Remove overay (Fig. 4 on page 10) and check fuse Fi (Fig. 4). If F is open, contact Simpex for service. Check input wiring at TB-1 (XMER) & TB-2 (XMER). Individuay remove each externa wire from the contro pane unti the ground faut cears. Locate and repair ground faut. If AC POWER ON LED is off, perform the corrective action specified for this symptom (see above). If AC POWER ON LED is on, check for AC brownout, battery votage and battery connections. Make sure CITY DISC switch is set to the CONNECT position. Check jumper JW configuration (see Figure 21 on page 25). Check city wires (if used) at TB5-1 (CITY +) & TB5-2 (CITY -). This may indicate a tripped city box. A remote ACK switch coud aso be on. Check annunciator LEDs. Repace any bad LEDs. Check annunciator wiring (refer to page 20 and the pubication provided with the annunciator). Remove wires from TB2-5 (SIG + ) & TB2-6 (SIG - ) or, if the suppressor board is used, TB-9 (SIG +) & TB-10 (SIG -) on the suppressor board and connect a OK-ohm resistor across the terminas. If the indicators go out, check circuit wiring. If indicators remain on, see box beow. Remove wires from terminas associated with the zone indicated by the TROUBLE LED and connect a 3.3k-ohm resistor across the terminas (zone wires wi be connected to the suppressor, disconnect or combination board, if used.) Remove the resistors and reconnect the zone wiring after testing. If indicators go out, check circuit wiring. If indicators remain on, see box beow. Check for shorts in the zone circuit(s) associated with iuminated ALARM LED. Check peripheras in the zone circuit(s) (refer to the pubication provided with each device). Pace a soid conductor (short) across the appropriate zone terminas. If the aarm is activated, check the aarm-initiating device (refer to pubication provided with the device). If aarm is not activated, see box beow. If troube condition persists, contact your oca Simpex Time Recorder Co. office isted in the Yeow Pages for service. 9

HOW TO TEST THE SYSTEM (REFER TO NFPA 72H) Note: The system shoud be tested periodicay. Check with oca codes. Notify appropriate personne. (If the system is connected to the city, notify the fire department or monitoring faciity.) Unock and open pane door. Unsnap and remove pane overay (Fig. 4). Set DIP switch SW1-1 to the OFF position (Fig. 4) and press the RESET switch (Fig. 4) unti the LEDs iuminate. - SYSTEM TROUBLE LED remains iuminated. CAUTION: If using aarm reay modue, disconnect the modue s AUX- wire at contro pane termina TB2-3. Activate an aarm-initiating device (pu station or smoke detector). Repeat this step unti a aarm-initiating devices have been activated or in accordance with oca codes. - Notification appiances operate with code representing the zone in aarm. (After four seconds, system automaticay resets to aow test of another device.) Note: Auxiiary reays and city connection do not operate during test. Momentariy open, then reconnect any device wiring (initiating devices and notification appiances) to test for proper operation of the supervisory circuitry. Notification appiances operate continuousy for four seconds if system has detected the wiring faut. Note: Do not open wiring on the first notification appiance. Disconnecting the first appiance opens the entire notification circuit and prevents the other appiances from operating..:_ i: When test is compete, set DIP switch SW-1 to the ON position and press the RESET switch unti LEDs iuminate. CAUTION: Reconnect aarm reay modue AUX- wire at contro pane termina TB2-3. Repace pane overay. Press the RESET switch after competing the test. Notify appropriate personne that test is compete. HOW TO PERFORM THE LED TEST: Press the RESET switch (Fig. 4) unti LEDs iuminate. - The tone device sounds for /2 second. - The SYSTEM TROUBLE LED, SIGNAL TROUBLE LED and the four ZONE ALARM and TROUBLE LEDs iuminate for five seconds. The pane s termina boards are abeed with a TB number (TB, TB2, TB3, etc.), and each termina is designated a termina number (1, 2, 3, etc.). Therefore, TB-1 is termina 1 on termina board TB, TB-2 is termina 2 on termina board TBI, etc. Each termina is aso identified with an abbreviation of the circuit wire that is to be connected to it (SIG -, SIG +, ZON -, ZON +, etc.). A wiring must be in accordance with oca codes. A wiring shoud be in accordance with Nationa Eectric Code, Artice 760. A neaty wired system wi hep assure an accurate inspection of a connections and simpify troubeshooting. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR SYSTEM WIRING These requirements are intended to aid the instaer in making a safe and troube-free instaation, but they are not intended to circumvent any pertaining and/or required codes, aws, reguations, etc. Note: These wiring specifications are subject to oca authority approva. Genera Wiring Requirements For Fire Aarm Systems 1. A wires are to be copper conductors ony. 2. A wiring, except incoming power and ground connecting wires, must be free from grounds or shorts and have a resistance of one megohm, or higher, to earth. 3. Metaic conduit, metaic raceway, pastic pipe, pastic raceways, or approved power imited fire aarm cabe may be used. If metaic conduit is used, the foowing must be observed: If the continuity of the metaic conduit is not maintained, then a 12AWG (minimum) drain wire must be used between the break of metaic conduit. The drain wire wi be connected to the metaic conduit at both ends. 4. Ony system wiring can be run in the same conduit, pipe raceway, or muticonductor cabes. 5. Where system wires pass through foors or fire-rated was, the instaation sha be made to prevent the spread of fire from foor to foor (i.e. patching of hoes, fire stops, etc.). 6. A system wiring subject to physica damage sha be mechanicay protected based on the environment the cabe is subjected to. 7. Each device - pu station, detector, horn, be, etc. - must have its own encosure such as a back box, outet box, etc. 8. A minimum of 6 inches of free conductor wi be required in each eectrica box to faciitate terminations. A 12-inch service oop of cabe is required for a continuous pus through an eectrica box. 9. Unused openings in eectrica boxes sha be propery banked off with suitabe protection equivaent to the wa thickness of the equipment. A spice boxes sha have a bank cover. 10. A wiring sha be terminated with U.L. isted devices (i.e. wire nuts, pressure connectors, etc.). Wiring terminated with ony eectrica tape is not permitted. A spicing (free ends of conductors) sha be covered with an insuation equivaent to that of the conductors. Genera Wiring Requirements For Fire Aarm Systems Using Pastic Pipe, Pastic Raceway Or Approved, Power Limited Fire Aarm Cabe. 1. In ieu of a metaic raceway and when a system wire run is adjacent and parae to other buiding wire runs, a minimum distance of 6 inches sha be maintained between the different wire runs. 2. In ieu of a metaic raceway and when a system wire run is to cross over other buiding wire runs, the system wire runs sha cross over at a go-degree ange to the other buiding wire runs and have a minimum 6-inch service oop between the different wire runs. 13

3. A fire aarm cabes sha be supported within 6 inches of every eectrica box at 4 /2-foot intervas. Aong the wiring path, ony insuated stapes or nyon tie-wraps wi be permitted. Eectrica tape is not an acceptabe means of securing. 4. A fire aarm cabes entering an eectrica box must be provided with a connector that provides strain reief and protection for the cabe. A cabe entering an eectrica box with no mechanica protection is not aowed. 5. A fire aarm cabes sha maintain a minimum distance of 3 feet from every recessed fixture due to excessive heat radiation caused by the fixture, e.g. high-hat fixtures. Cabes sha not be instaed in direct contact with ay-in fixture baasts. 6. Where fire aarm cabes pass through foors or fire-rated was, the cabes sha be mechanicay protected by metaic conduit, metaic raceway, pastic pipe or pastic raceway to a minimum of seven feet. 7. Where fire aarm cabes are exposed to the weather, the cabes sha be shieded or run in metaic raceway with approved weatherproof or rain-tight fittings. SYSTEM WIRING SPECIFICATIONS Incoming Source - Power Wiring Life Safety Branch Circuit, or as required by oca code. Pane draws two amps max. at 12OV, 60Hz via a fused disconnect or circuit breaker. Wiring - Use two 14AWG wires, or 14AWG cabe. Earth Detection Source - Connection sha be made to an approved dedicated earth connection per NEC Artice 250 (NFPA 70). Wiring - Use 14AWG wire. Aarm-Initiating Device Wiring Aarm-initiating devices - Manua pu stations, automatic heat detectors and automatic smoke detectors. Wiring -Four circuits with 2 wires per circuit. Each circuit terminates with a 3.3k-ohm end-of-ine resistor. Use 18AWG to 14AWG wire. Note: If using 4-wire detectors, refer to Step 4 on page 22. The RMT + output used can suppy up to 500MA of fitered, reguated 24VDC. Max. oop ine resistance for each circuit is 50 ohms if two-wire detectors are used. 14

Aarm-Notification Appiance Wiring Aarm-notification appiances - Horns, bes and visua units. Wiring - Two-wire circuit terminating with a 1 OK-ohm end-of-ine resistor. Use 18AWG to 14AWG wire. Note: Because the system s tota signa power is 2 amps, the number of notification appiances and the wire ength that can be used in the notification circuit is imited. Refer to Tabe 2 to determine the maximum number of notification appiances and the tota wire ength that can be used in the notification circuit. Line distance was determined based on. A per device and devices spaced at equa distances. (For circuits where a devices are ocated at end of the circuit, contact your oca Simpex Branch Office). INSTALLATION PROCEDURES CONTROL PANEL MOUNTING (Refer to Figure 6) 1. Unock and open pane door. 2. Unsnap and remove pane overay from circuit card. 3. Remove knockout pugs on box assemby for wire entry. 4. At contro pane mounting ocation, position contro pane and secure with fasteners which are capabe of supporting pane with batteries. Hoes are provided at rear of box for securing pane to wa. 5. Enter externa wires into contro pane. For semi-fush mounting, insta trim pane and secure with six screws. 6. If using transient suppressor, zone disconnect, or combination transient suppressor/zone disconnect board, insta board as foows: a. Secure hex spacers to studs on box assemby. b. Aign board with spacers and secure with four screws. c. Connect cabe to board and contro pane as shown (bue edge of cabe shoud ine up with pin 9 on each connector). 7. If using externa battery cabinet, mount it using the instructions provided with the cabinet. The battery cabinet shoud be cose-nipped to the contro pane (maximum two feet apart). 8. If using battery meter modue or aarm reay modue, mount it using the instructions provided with the modue. Make sure the modue is within six inches of the contro pane. 9. PERFORM THIS STEP ONLY IF PANEL USES ALARM VERIFICATION. An aarm verification abe (P/N 519-532) is provided with the contro pane. Insta a periphera devices (detectors, horns, pu stations, etc.) and connect them to the appropriate wires. (Refer to the instaation instructions packed with the devices.) Connect a 3.3K-ohm end-of-ine resistor (EOLR) across the terminas of the ast device in each initiating circuit and mark the device accordingy (see Figure 7). Connect a 1 OK EOLR across the terminas of the ast device in each notification appiance circuit and mark the deyj:e accordingy (see Figure 8). BUILDING WIRING CHECKOUT PROCEDURE (REFER TO WIRING DIAGRAM 841-610) 1. Check notification appiance and initiating device circuits for absence of votage, shorts, or opens as foows: A. At the contro pane, ocate the notification appiance or one of the initiating device circuits. B. Set vot-ohmmeter to 300VAC. C. Pace meter probes so that back probe is on - wire and red probe is on + wire. Vot-ohmmeter shoud read OV (Fig. 10). If you read a votage, check circuit wiring. D. Set vot-ohmmeter to GOVDC and repeat step 1c. E. Set vot-ohmmeter to OHMS X 10 and pace meter probes as described in Step 1 C. If reading indicates no continuity (open circuit, see Fig. 11) or a short circuit (see Fig. 12), ocate and correct open/short in circuit. Note: If reading indicates an open circuit in an initiating circuit, make sure that a smoke detector heads are mounted and seated in their bases. F. Repeat Steps 1 A thru 1 E for a zone circuits. Make sure 3.3K resistor is connected to circuit as shown in wiring diagram 841-610. B. Connect the sprinker tamper switch (normay cosed) as shown in Figure 18. Make sure resistors (1 K and 820Q 1 watt) are connected to circuit as shown in wiring diagram 841-610. Note: If the system contains the transient suppressor, zone disconnect or transient suppressor. zone disconnect board, connect the waterfow, sprinker circuits to the board instead of the pane terminas (see Page 28). AC Power Connection The -9403 contro pane must be connected to 120V 60Hz power, and a 120VAC wires must be routed separatey from other wires in the contro pane. (220! 240V 50Hz is used if your system is a 4001-9404). 13. Connect back power ead (hot) to back ead from transformer input. Connections are described beow. Note that you must run the harness through the knockout in the battery cabinet cosest to the contro pane, and up to the battery termina (TB).
