(DBA Skuttle Indoor Air Quality Products)! Installation Alerts DANGER: DO NOT cut or drill into air conditioning or electrical accessories during installation. WARNING: This bypass drum humidifier must be installed by a qualified heating and air conditioning contractor. Failure to comply could result in serious injury from electrical shock, damage to the humidifier or heating appliance, and/or void all warranties. CAUTIONS: 1. DO NOT install this humidifier with plastic water supply tubing. USE COPPER TUBING ONLY. 2. DO NOT install unit where freezing temperatures can occur. 3. DO NOT install unit where temperatures can exceed 180 F (82 C). 4. When installing this unit in an area where an overflow could result in water damage, install a suitable safety catch pan plumbed to a drain. 5. If the system contains a multi-speed blower motor, it is necessary to isolate the humidifier transformer to prevent premature burnout caused by the inductive current produced by the motor during high speed operation. This can be accomplished by several different types of wiring and accessories, such as using a pressure sensor or fan sail switch to detect blower operation, and an independent electrical circuit to power the humidifier transformer. Do not install U V lights near the unit. May cause the pad to deteriorate. NOTES: 1. You must comply with all local codes, ordinances and regulations pertaining to plumbing and electrical wiring. 2. The preferred power source for this unit is one that is independent of the furnace blower operation. 3. This humidifier is shipped as a right-hand bypass unit, and can be reversed. When reversing, make sure the float valve is mounted on the same side as the drum motor.

Skuttle Bypass Drum Humidifier Installation Instructions and drill five 7/64 in. (0.28 cm) mounting holes. Replace the cabinet and secure it with 1/2 in. (1.27 cm) screws. 4. On the inside of the humidifier cabinet whwere the bypass tube will connect, snap the drum shaft bearing in place with the U shape of the bearing facing up. 1. Determine the best location for the humi difier, based on the placement options, above. (Models 45 and 90 are shown; placement options for Model 190 are identical. 5. Install the collar on the other plenum and connect a bypass tube from the collar to the humidifier with sheet metal screws. (See below.) Model 45 = 5 in. (12.70 cm) collar and bypass tube Models 90 & 190 = 6 in. (15.24 cm) collar and bypass tube 2. Draw a level line on the plenum and tape the template (in carton) in position. Template Dimensions: Model 45 = 7-1/4 in. (18.42 cm) x 5-1/2 in. (13.97 cm) Models 90 & 190 = 8-3/4 in. (22.23 cm) x 7-1/4 in. (18.42 cm) Trace around the template with a marker, then remove the template. Carefully cut the rectangular opening. 3. DANGER: Do not cut or drill into air conditioning or electrical acces sories. Insert the humidifier cabinet into the opening, making sure it is level. Mark the location of the five mounting holes. Remove the cabinet 1 Seal connections with duct tape. If the furnace has air conditioning, set the duct damper for summer season shutoff. 6. Insert the overflow drain cup fitting into the bottom of the humidifier cabinet so that the cup is toward the front and on the same side as the OVERFLOW TUBE bypass tubing. Place the water pan in the unit with the overflow tube over the drain fitting.

Installation Instructions (continued) 7. Attach 3/8 in. (0.95 cm) I.D. tubing to the drain fitting and route it continuously downward to a suitable waste drain for overflow protection. Move the valve to the same side as the motor (if necessary). Insert the valve hole plug in the double D hole on the opposite side from the valve. 8. Assemble the drum and evaporator pad as shown at the bottom of the page. Install by inserting the drum and pad into the motor (coupling-end first), then connecting it to the saddle valve and humidifier. 9. CAUTION: Avoid contact with hot surfaces and sharp edges. Using the instructions on the valve bag, install the saddle valve on the nearest cold water pipe. Connect copper tubing, flush it, and route it to the humidifier. NOTE: For correct float valve and water tubing installation, see the float valve instruction card, located either on the humidifier water valve or in the parts bag. 10. Turn water on at the saddle valve. Adjust the water level to 1-3/8 in. (3.49 cm) deep by turning the adjustment screw on the valve clockwise ( ) to lower and counterclockwise ( ) to raise. DRUM AND EVAPORATOR PAD ASSEMBLY (See #8, above.) 2 11. DANGER: To avoid shock or electro cution, TURN OFF THE ELECTRICAL POWER. NOTE: The preferred power source for this unit is one that is independent of the furnace blower operation. If the furnace is relatively new, check to see if there is an electronic control board with humidifier control terminals sometimes labeled HUM. (You may also consult the furnace installation manual or wiring diagram.) If humidifier terminals are present, proceed to No. 11A, below. If humidifier terminals are NOT present, answer the following questions: Is the blower motor powered with a supply greater than 120 volts? OR Does the blower motor change speed when the thermostat s system fan switch is activated during the heating mode? OR Does the blower motor change speed when the air conditioning is activated? If the answer to ANY of the above ques tions is YES, skip to No. 11B. If the answer to ALL of the above ques tions is NO, skip to No. 11C. 11A. Using a meter, check the terminals for power output during the heating cycle when the blower is running. Determine the output voltage. Some circuit boards have printed indicators. Most are 24 volt AC and only require con-

necting the drum motor and the humidi stat. (See Wiring Diagram A on page 3.) WIRING DIAGRAM A Terminals on Board humidifier and system operations. (See Wiring Diagram C, below.) WIRING DIAGRAM C Single-Speed Blower Replace If, in rare cases, the furnace terminals are 120 volt, connect the transformer to the terminals and wire as shown in Diagram C on right. 11B. For multi-speed blowers or systems not using 120 VAC, use the transformer (supplied) to coordinate humidifier operation with the system air mover. The source of power for the humidifier transformer should not be the blower motor wiring, but an independent source. This is to prevent transformer failure, either from feedback from the blower motor during air conditioning, or from voltage greater than the 120 volts required for the transformer. (See Wiring Diagram B, below.) WIRING DIAGRAM B Multi-Speed Blower Replace 11C. If you determine that the system blower motor is a 120 volt, single-speed motor, and that it does not change speed during the cooling mode, wire the transformer into the blower motor wiring. This will coordinate the 12. Follow the instructions n the humidistat parts bag to position and install the universal humidistat on either the ductwork or an appropriate wall. 13. Check the humidifier for proper operation. Turn on the water at the valve which leads directly to the humidifier. Make sure the water level is set at 1-3/8 in. (3.49 cm). Turn the valve screw clockwise ( ) to lower the water level; turn it counter clockwise ( ) to raise the water level. Turn the humidistat to its highest setting and observe the humidifier evaporator pad. If it does not rotate, turn the furnace on by increasing the thermostat temperature until the furnace blower comes on. This should cause the humidifier evaporator pad to NOTE: Wiring the humidifier to operate independently of or in conjunction with the furnace blower is up to the installer s discrition. On installations where the unit is closely sized (i.e., the cubic footage of the home is at or near the humidifier s peak volume capacity), independent operation allows the unit to operate throughout the full blower cycle, thereby eliminating the lag time involved in starting the humidifier. IMPORTANT: Reset the thermostat and humidistat to their correct positions for automatic operation. 3
