UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE GARDEN/VISITS Group Meeting held on 10 th July 2013 Sandra opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. In all 41 attended. Reports since our last meeting 12 th June 2 people enjoyed their visit to Trent College Arboretum 16 th June Gardeners World Live at the NEC no one attended 26 th June Barbara had organised a visit to Trent College Arboretum which everyone enjoyed although some felt that, despite being very knowledgeable, there was a little too much talking. It was a very hot evening and there was nowhere to get drinks. The money raised was going to a good cause - a Kenyan school. It was also interesting to see where the regional U3A meeting would be held next July. 21 st June a very good day was had at Ely apart from the route taken by the driver. Sandra did take up the issue with Littles coach company but found them uninterested. By chance the departure at 5pm worked better than those trying to leave at 4pm. Thanks were offered to Sandy for organising the event particularly as the last time was16 years ago. 24 th June visit to Whitwick Manor with Probus. Excellent place to visit perhaps more for the house than the gardens. Silverdale coaches looked after them well. Weather was kind. 26 th June Thank you to Ann for her hospitality and the viewing of her garden. 108 was raised for Ann s charity. Ann kindly offered to open again on Thursday 18 th July for those who missed out last time. 26 th June - Barbara and Linda enjoyed their visit to New Landscapes at Jubilee Campus with Friends of the University.

Joy has small garden but interested people are welcome to have a look on Aug 3 rd. Suggestion made for a donation to a charity. Sandy said that she has the dates for Harrogate next year. Spring Show 24 th /27 th April, Autumn Show 12 th /14 th September. Wheatcrofts are organising a trip there this year Saturday 14 th September contact them direct. Skills also doing an overnight in September this year. Lucy is organising a trip to The Malvern Show for the Main U3A next spring date to be confirmed. Contact Lucy on 0115 9397230 for more information. Liz reminded people about the London trip for main U3A. More people needed so please ring Lucy if you are interested. Sandy asked if anyone knew an Elizabeth Newton who had been trying to contact her. Sandy also brought in a Saga holiday brochure she had received and said there were lots of holidays featuring gardens in a variety of places e.g. Croatia if anyone was interested. A new Gardening Group is being proposed which will be more practical. 20 people registered an interest. Someone to run it would be needed if there were any volunteers they should get in touch with Jim. Ann had enjoyed visits to Harlow Carr and Belsay (English Heritage) in Northumberland. The guide leaflet to the latter had been written by the local U3A. Sept 12 th -15 th Heritage Open Days leaflets available. Book soon
