CAUTION in black letters on a safety yellow background with a safety yellow exclamation point. This indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, COULD result in minor or moderate injury.!! WARNING CAUTION D#ALL-3-R2 8

RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION General Safety Rules Follow lockout procedure before servicing. Read and understand manual before operating machine. Wear eye protection. See the plant supervisor to determine what protective equipment each job requires. Follow electrical and fire codes. RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION Do not wear loose clothing, jewelry or long hair around operating equipment. Keep guards in protective position when machine is operating. Keep clear of belts chains and moving parts.! DANGER Lockout ALL energy sources before servicing. D#ALL-3-R2 9

RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION Safety: 1. Do not operate the roller spreader without the glue pan in place. You could get your fingers pinched between the moving rollers from underneath. 2. Warning stickers are attached to the frame. Do not remove them. If they become illegible over time, replace them with new stickers available from James L. Taylor. RULES FOR SAFE OPERATION 3. Isolate power from the machine by unplugging the device from it's electrical outlet. Wait 5 minutes for the capacitor do discharge before opening the electrical box. D#171B-3-R2 Safety 11

INSTALLATION Receiving & Unpacking Inspect the shipping skids and boxes for damage. If any shipping damage has occurred, notify the shipping company immediately. Setting up the Roller Spreader The gluing module of your Roller Spreader shipped fully assembled and ready for use. If your machine includes the optional infeed conveyor, bolt this section to the infeed of your machine with the fasteners included with the machine. 1. Your machine is supplied with a onequart can of Bates Boothcoating. Apply this product directly to surfaces where glue may drip. This will enable the glue to be easily cleaned. INTSTALLATION 2. 3. Remove the glue pan cover. You may need to install the appropriate cord end attachment for your country or region. Plug the power cord into a properly grounded and protected three pole outlet. See the attached plate for the voltage requirements. D#171B-4-R2 Installation 13

OPERATION Operating Controls 1. Your machine contains a single switch that will start and stop the motor. 2. There are two screws contacting the doctor roll bearings. These screws allow adjustment of the glue spread. General Machine Operation Adding Glue With the Roller Spreader turned on, fill the glue pan with your liquid adhesive. Bring the adhesive level up until it contacts the bottom of the roll and then fill it another 1/2-1 higher. Add more glue as needed throughout the day. Adjusting the Spread Adjust the glue spread thickness by turning the two thumb screws that move the doctor roll toward and away from the glue roll. The optimum glue spread will be found to be the thinnest spread possible which still gives a continuous, uniform line of squeezed out glue. Generally, a spread of 7-8 mils is optimum. As well as saving glue, a thin spread will minimize clean-up and, in some cases such as when face laminating with polyvinyl or catalyzed polyvinyl glues, also minimize cure time. A mil gauge for measuring the thickness of the spread has been included with your machine. Once the optimum setting has been determined, the supplied elastic stop nuts should be used as lock nuts and will serve as reference points for quick future adjustment of the doctor roll. OPERATION D#171B-5-R2 Operation 15

OPERATION Applying Glue Move the wood across the roller by hand in the same direction the roller is turning and at approximately the same speed at which the glue roller outer surface is moving. As light a pressure as possible should be applied to the wood to prevent the glue from squeezing up onto the surfaces which are not being glued. Throughout the Day Keep the roller spreader running whenever there is glue in the pan. If the motor is turned off for too long or the glue pan runs dry the rollers may glue themselves to one another causing the clutch to slip. Keep the cover installed on the glue pan when not in use to prevent the glue from skimming over. Daily Operation OPERATION At the Beginning of Each Day 1. 2. 3. 4. Remove the glue pan cover and set it aside. If a damp cloth has been placed on the glue roll to keep it from drying out, remove the cloth. Pour glue into the Spreader Glue Pan. Be careful not to overfill it. Do not set the glue level closer than 1/4" from the bottom of the lowest slot in the glue pan. Power up the Roller Spreader. D#171B-5-R2 Operation 16

OPERATION At the End of Each Day 1. 2. 3. 4. Power off the Roller Spreader. Turn off your Roller Spreader. Dampen the sponge on the inside of the glue pan cover. Dampen a cloth and drape it over the glue roll and the doctor roll. Place the glue pan cover in place on the glue pan, making sure the cover has a good seal with the pan. At the End of Each Week 1. 2. Unplug the machine. Remove the glue pan by pulling the two pins and dropping the pan down. Be careful not to spill any remaining glue. OPERATION 3. 4. 5. 6. Pour the remaining glue back into your glue container or dispose of glue according to local regulations. Loosen the doctor roll as much as possible. With one hand supporting the glue roll from underneath, pull the round handle away from the roller spreader until one end of the glue roll is free. Lift the glue roll up and away from the drive end of the roller spreader. Clean the glue roll and pan thoroughly in warm water. It is often desirable to D#171B-5-R2 Operation 17

OPERATION leave the glue roll and pan soaking in water over the weekend. 7. 8. With the glue roll and pan still removed, clean the doctor roll with a rag and water. At the beginning of the following week, re-install the glue roll. OPERATION D#171B-5-R2 Operation 18

TROUBLESHOOTING General Troubleshooting 1. The machine will not turn on: The motor is protected by a 1 amp fuse inside the electrical box. Remove the cover and access the fuse holder to replace the fuse if necessary. Spare fuses are shipped inside the electrical box. 2. The glue hardens to the rollers: Submerge the roller in water to soften up the hardened glue until they can be separated and then resume operation of the roller spreader. Replace felt coating if necessary. 3. The glue becomes too thick: Add water to the PVA glue to make up for the water that is lost from the glue due to evaporation. TROUBLESHOOTING D#171B-6-R2 Troubleshooting 17

Weekly MAINTENANCE Clean the Glue Roll and Glue Pan 1. Remove the glue pan. 2. With one hand supporting the glue roll from underneath, flip up the plastic block and pull the roll towards you. 3. Clean the glue roll and pan thoroughly in warm water. It is often desirable to leave the glue roll and pan in water over the weekend. 4. With the glue roll and pan still removed, clean the doctor roll with a paint brush and water. 5. At the beginning of the following week, re-install the glue roll. Monthly Grease the Roller Spreader Bearings 1. Grease each of the sealed ball bearings. As Needed Replacing the Glue Roll's Felt Covering When the felt (covering) of the glue roll has worn out, it should be replaced with a new one: 1. Cut the felt roll off the glue roll with a sharp knife. 2. Remove any adhesive that is on the roll. 3. Remove the pop rivets from the old roll. 4. With the backing still on check felt on mandrel to be sure of a proper fit. 5. Remove the backing a little at a time. Make sure that the felt is kept tightly together as any gaps would give you ridges of glue in spots. 6. Pop rivet the ends down to the roll and trim any excess of the felt of the ends with a sharp knife. 7. Then replace the roll to the machine. MAINTENANCE D#171B-7-R2 Maintenance 19
