SMART CITY Introduction The Prime Minister launched the flagship Smart City Mission, along with the AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) and the Housing for All missions, on 25th June 2015, aimed at transforming urban India. There is a strong complementarity between AMRUT and the Smart Cities Mission in achieving urban transformation. While AMRUT follows a project-based approach, the Smart Cities Mission follows an area-based strategy. Smart City Mission The Smart City Mission is primarily targeted to provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment and application of Smart Solutions. The focus of the mission is on sustainable and inclusive development. The Mission will cover 100 cities distributed amongst the States and UTs and its duration will be five years (FY2015-16 to FY 2019-20). The criteria for allocation of number of Smart Cities per state are based on the urban population and number of statutory towns in the respective state. Typical / Key Features of Smart Cities

SMART CITY The 3 key elements that are unique to this mission as compared to the previous urban reform programmes are: Challenge or competition method to select cities for funding. Strategy of area-based development, which can then be replicated Citizen s involvement from conceptualization stage till the end Citizens Engagement The strategy was focused to engage all segments i.e. men, women and children at home, public places, institutions and work places through personal, in-group s and media contacts. All key stakeholders residents/elected representative, civic authorities, industrial / trader organizations were mobilized and actively engaged to dialogue and describe their views on long term vision and the top of mind five priorities for improving quality of life.
