The show table is an outlet for members to share the great job they have done in growing and flowering their orchids; therefore, please respect the unwritten rule of owning and growing an orchid for a minimum of 6 months.

OUR APRIL SPEAKER Guillermo Salazar Mini Cats Guillermo A. Salazar will be our April speaker. Guillermo was born in Miami Florida but grew up in El Salvador in Central America. As a child of a nursery owner father and an interior and floral designer mother, Guillermo was able to develop his natural creative and professional talents even before attending college. At Florida A&M University he followed his dream of becoming a professional landscape designer, receiving his degree in Landscape Design & Management. Guillermo received a Master s in Science in Environmental Horticulture from the University of Florida. As a 9 year old living in El Salvador, Guillermo decided that orchids were the most attractive plants in this tropical environment and he started collecting them. He became the youngest member of the Asociacion de Orquideologia de El Salvador. During his college years, he learned the importance of protecting natural resources especially orchids here in Florida. A Florida Master Gardener, Guillermo has worked for several years as a professional Landscape Designer in private, municipal and governmental capacities in the South Florida area. He currently works as faculty for University of Florida & Miami Dade County Extension IFAS and he is an Adjunct faculty professor for the Landscape Technology Department for Miami Dade College. His work entails teaching people how to use Florida friendly principles, as well as appropriate plants and orchids to design successful and environmentally conscious gardens. He has published articles on home gardening, design and orchid articles for several South Florida design magazines. His credentials include: ISA certified Arborist, LIAF Certified Landscape Inspector and FNGLA certified Horticulturist. His specialty in orchids is Angraecoids, Bulbophyllums, rare and miniature tropical species. In his spare time, Guillermo is a professional breeder of Persian and Himalayan cats, enjoys gardening, traveling and owns a landscape design and consulting company. Guillermo will be presenting on Miniatures for South Florida. Guillermo s program is titled Miniatures for South Florida and will give an overview of the most beautiful, unique and warm loving miniatures suitable to be grown here in our own South Florida backyard. Guillermo will be giving specific tips to grow them as successfully as he does! Join us in learning about the fascinating world of miniature orchids. Orchid March Madness

March Program The World of Oncidiums Was Presented by Carol DeBiase Carol DeBiase, our March speaker, has been an AOS judge with a passion for orchids for 40 years! As an internationally accredited judge, she has traveled all over the world. And as curator of the orchid collection at Viscaya she cares for 15,000 orchids! She told us that guided tours and audio tours are both available at Viscaya. Carol s presentation to us was The World of Oncidiums. Carol claims that oncidiums, with over 600 species, are one of the easiest types of orchids to grow. She assured us that the spots we often see on the leaves of oncidiums are normal! She stated that because of their thin roots, most oncidiums need a lot of water. In the orchidarium she grows all the oncidiums in sphagnum moss and waters everyday----but stressed that they need lots of moving air. She uses whatever fertilizer is the cheapest and does use a bloom booster to stimulate blooms, which takes about 3 months. She recommends using the original blue Dawn dishwashing liquid as a sticker when you fertilize as it seems to work best and helps keep the bugs down, too. Carol said that if we have an oncidium that won t bloom----move it! It probably needs to be moved to higher light. Carol s presentation included beautiful slides of various oncidiums. It became clear to the audience why many oncidiums are called Dancing Ladies, as the lips on many of the flowers look like big, colorful ruffled skirts as worn by a dancing lady.
