3 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 2 PRECAUTIONS IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Installation and servicing air conditioning equipment can be hazardous due to system pressure and electrical components. Only trained and qualified service personnel should install or service this equipment. Untrained personnel can perform basic maintenance functions such as cleaning coils and filters and replacing filters. All other operations should be performed by trained service personnel. When working on air conditioning equipment, observe precautions in the literature and on tags and labels attached to the unit. WARNING This manual describes the installation of TOSHIBA split system indoor and outdoor units. Do not install them connected to any other indoor or outdoor unit. Mismatching of units and incompatibility between control devices in the two units could lead to damage of both units. TOSHIBA declines any responsibility and warranty shall be void If these installation instructions are not observed or if changes to the electrical connections are made. WARNING Before performing service or maintenance operations on system, turn off main power of the unit. Electric shock can cause personal injury. Earth work should be requested from the supplying retail dealership or professional vendors. Insufficient grounding work may be the cause of electric shock. Do not connect the earth wire to a gas pipe, water pipe, lightning conductor, or telephone earth wire. Do not use any refrigerant different from the one specified for complement or replacement. Otherwise, abnormally high pressure may be generated in the refrigeration cycle, which may result in a failure or explosion of the product or an injury to your body. WARNING Supply the correct voltage from the outdoor unit. Using voltage other than that specified will damage the unit. Check the power connection. If the power plug is not correctly connected, or if there is any damage to the power cord, it could result in leakage or electric shock. WARNING Do not use flammable sprays near the unit. The unit can be damaged by gasolin, benzene, thinners, insecticides and other chemical agents.

4 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 3 PRECAUTIONS WARNING Do not spill the water on the indoor and outdoor units to avoid the risk of serious electric shock DANGER Do not put hands or objects into the discharge grille of indoor unit. DANGER If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by manufacturer. its service agent or similarly qualified persons in order to avoid a hazard. DANGER Use only fuses of the proper amperage. Do not use copper wire instead of a proper fuse. It will not only damage the unit, but could cause a major fire.

5 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 4 PRECAUTIONS CAUTION Set the indoor temperature for a comfortable setting. A very low temperature setting considerably increases power consumption and is bad for health. CAUTION Do not obstruct the front of discharge grille of either unit. This will block airflow, reduce the cooling effect, and may result in unit malfunction. CAUTION Ventilate the indoor air when the indoor becomes stuffy or filled with undesirable odors. CAUTION Please read this owner s manual carefully before operating the unit. It contains further important instructions for proper operation.

6 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 5 PRECAUTIONS HINTS FOR ECONOMICAL OPERATION CAUTION Avoid direct sunlight entering the room during cooling operation, as this increases the cooling load. Use window curtains or blinds to reduce the cooling load. Open the window only when the room is required to be ventilated. CAUTION Do not use heating devices during cooling operation. It reduces cooling efficiency of the air conditioner. CAUTION Clean the air filter periodically. Dust in the filter will cause the low efficiency of the unit. CAUTION If you start operation again after turning off the unit or power failure, the cooling will be delayed for 3 minutes to protect the unit. CAUTION The distance between air conditioner and TV should be more than 1M, to avoid interference.

7 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 6 PRECAUTIONS STANDARD SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR AIR-CONDITIONING UNITS The air conditioner is not intended for use by young children or special needs persons without supervision by a person that is responsible for their safety. Young children should be supervised to ensure that they do not play with the air conditioner. Wiring connections must be secured tightly and the cable should be routed properly to avoid the risk. Don t use a damaged power cord, or loose socket as it may cause fire or electric shock. Do not place the power cord near the heater. Install the panel and cover the control box securely. Do not touch the unit with a wet hand, there is a risk of electric shock. Do not place anything on the power cable, there is a risk of fire and electric shock. Two or more people should lift and transport the product and use proper safety precautions while lifting the product to avoid personal injury. Always check for gas leakage after installation or repair of product.

Remove the used batteries and insert new batteries. The remote control uses two alkaline batteries. (1.5V, LR03 x 2)

11 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 10 REMOTE CONTROL DESCRIPTION USING THE REMOTE CONTROL Use the remote control where its signals can reach the receiver of the air conditioner. (a distance of 7m is allowed.) The operating range is as follow. The straight line distance should be less than 7 meters. Receiving Area You can hear a beeping sound from the unit, if any button is pressed, which indicates that any signal is received. CAUTION 1 The air conditioner will not operate if curtains, doors or other materials block the signals from the remote control to the unit. 2 If the infrared signal receiver on the unit is exposed to direct sunlight, the air conditioner may not work properly. Draw the curtains to avoid direct sunlight. 3 Avoid spilling liquid onto the remote control or dropping it. This can cause deformation, discoloration and malfunction. 4 A mounting bracket for the remote control is supplied with the unit. Install the mounting bracket on unit side panel below the receiver of the unit.

12 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 11 UNIT MAINTENANCE CLEANING THE AIR FILTER 1 Pull the air inlet grille toward you. Then grasp the handle of the filter and pull it toward you and up. 2 Clean the filter with water or a vacuum cleaner. Wash the filter with neutral detergent or soapy water when the filter is very dirty. 3 Rinse the filter under running water and let it dry before replacing in the unit. Refit the filter correctly. NOTE Do not use water over 40 C for cleaning. It could damage the filter. Be careful not to scrub the filter. The filtering capability can be reduced. Turn off the unit before cleaning. CLEANING THE INDOOR UNIT 1 Rub with cloth soaked in warm water or neutral detergent and dry with a towel. 2 Do not use very hot water (over 40 C). It may cause deformation or discoloration. 3 Do not use insecticides or other chemical cleaning agents.

13 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 12 UNIT MAINTENANCE AFTER SEASON CARE If the unit is to be switched off for an 1 extended period, run the unit on fan only 2 for half a day to dry the inside of the unit. Stop the unit operation to clean the air filter of the indoor unit. STOP TROUBLE SHOOTING If anything goes wrong while you are operating your air conditioner, check the followings. Is the sun shining directly on the indoor unit? Cooling is insufficient Are the windows or doors opened? Is a heating appliance operating in the room? Is anything obstructing the outdoor unit? If the above actions do not correct the COOL operation. Keep it from shining. Close the windows and doors. Remove the heating appliance. Remove the obstruction. Consult the dealer from whom you bought the unit. If the COOLING SYSTEM of this appliance is damaged, it must only be repaired by TOSHIBA service man or its authorized dealers because special purpose tools are required. If your unit still fails to operate properly after you complete all of the owner s service checks, firstly contact your TOSHIBA dealer or the authorized service center he recommends.

16 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 15 CHOOSING THE UNIT LOCATION INDOOR UNIT AVOID Areas where leakage of flammable gas may be expected. Places where large amount of oil mist exist. Direct sunlight. Nearby heat sources that may affect performance of the unit. Locations where the unit will be splashed with water or affected by dampness or humidity. Installing the unit behind curtains or furniture that obstruct air circulation. Places where inlet and outlet ports may be obstructed. DO Choose an appropriate position that every corner of the room can be uniformly cooled. Choose a location where connection pipe and drain hose have the shortest run to the outside. Allow room for operation and maintenance as well as unrestricted air flow around the unit. Choose a strong floor which is not liable to vibrate. Allow proper ventilation in the room. 17 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 16 OUTDOOR UNIT AVOID Direct sunlight, otherwise, if possible provide some shading. Heat sources, exhaust fans, and steam or flammable gas. Places where strong winds blow or that are very dusty. Places which are subject to heavy rain or snow fall. Damp, humid or uneven locations. DO Ensure that the operation noise and discharged air do not disturb your neighbors. Choose the location where the unit does not block passages and entrances. Choose a place as cool as possible. Choose a place that is well ventilated. If it is unavoidable to use in such places, consult with your distributor. A place with machine oil. A saline place such as very close to a seashore. A place with sulphur gas. A place where high-frequency waves are generated by radio equipment, welders, and medical equipment.

18 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 17 INSTALLATION TIPS The following points should be avoided. Soiling the ends of the connection pipes. Letting the ends of the connection pipes get wet. Loosening refrigerant connections after they have been tightened (Refrigerant leak). An excessive number of bends. Excessive distance between indoor and outdoor unit. Horizontal bends of the drain hose. Vertical deviation of the drain hose. Kinking the connection pipes.

19 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 18 INSTALLATION TIPS Slack connections on the electrical cables. An uneven installation. Blocking air intake or discharge grilles. Dripping due to insufficient insulation of pipes.

20 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 19 INDOOR UNIT INSTALLATION The piping can be connected in two directions indicated by 1,2. (Fig. 3) MAKING THE WALL PENETRATION FOR THE INTERCONNECTING PIPING Make a 65mm diameter hole in the wall. For the piping, make the hole so that the outside end is lower (5-10mm) than the inside end. The outdoor unit should not be tilted by more 45 when transporting. Fasten the unit with anchor bolts. Do not install the unit directly on the ground. 21 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 20 CONNECTING THE PIPING Pay careful attention to the following points when installing the refrigerant pipes. Hold the pipe with one wrench while tightening the connections with a torque wrench or double-ended wrench. Be careful not to damage the flare nut threads. Be especially careful when connecting the high pressure side of the connection pipe. If the tightening torque is insufficient, gas will leak from the connection. If it is too much, the flare will be damaged. Tighten the nut to the torque shown in Table 1. Flare nut Table 1. In this method, the connection pipes are flared at each end and connected with flare nuts. a) Cut the connection pipe to proper length with a pipe cutter. It is recommended to cut approx. 30~50 cm longer than the estimated piping length. b) Remove burrs at the end of the connection pipe with a pipe reamer or a file. This process is important and should be done carefully to make a good flare. 22 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 21 CONNECTING THE PIPING c) Insert the pipe into the insulation pipe. d) Remove the flare nut from the unit and be sure to mount it on the connection pipe. e) Make a flare at the end of connection pipe with a flare tool. (Fig. 8) NOTE Flare nut Good flare should have following conditions. Inside surface is glossy and smooth. Edge is smooth. Tapered sides are in uniform length. 23 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 22 CONNECTING THE PIPING CONNECTION PIPE TO INDOOR UNIT a. Remove the indoor pipe flare nut. (Check that there is no debris inside.) b. Align the center of the flare surface, and tighten the indoor pipe union and connection pipe flare nut with a double-ended wrench. (Fig. 10) While aligning the center of the flare surface, tighten the nut with hand, then hold the union side with a wrench and tighten Outdoor side Flare spanner or torque wrench the nut to the specified tightening torque with a torque wrench. Indoor side Figure 10 CONNECTING THE INTERCONNECTING PIPEWORK TO THE OUTDOOR UNIT VALVE Tighten the flare nut of the connection pipe at the outdoor unit valve. (Fig. 11) Tighten to the torque shown in Table 1. The tightening method is the same as that of the Indoor side. Three way valve (Gas pipe) Interconnecting pipework (Liquid pipe) Figure 11 PUMP DOWN (38SDL6B/HDL6B) Pump down means collecting all the refrigerant in the system back into the outdoor unit without losing any refrigerant gas. Pump down is used when the unit is moved or for servicing the refrigerant circuit. PUMP DOWN (refrigerant recovery operation) INSTRUCTION 1. Operate the unit in cooling mode 2. Loosen the pump down valve Tighten the high pressure service valve After completion of pump down, surely tighten the pump down valve 1 and low pressure service valve 3. CAUTION Pump down valve should be used only for the pump down and should be tightened in general.

24 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 23 AIR PURGE USING THE VACUUM PUMP For air purge, evacuate the air in the connecting pipe and indoor unit by using vacuum pump. For details, please refer to the following procedure. a. Connect the gauge manifold. b. Open the low pressure valve and close the high pressure valve of the gauge manifold completely. c. Operate the vacuum pump during at least 20 minutes until the pressure reaches -101Kpa (-760mm Hg). d. Close the low pressure valve of the gauge manifold and stop the vacuum pump operation. (If the indicator of gauge manifold is returned within 1-2 minute after stopping the vacuum pump, check the piping connection leakage.) e. Open both the three-way valves completely. f. Close both the three-way valve caps completely. g. Remove the gauge manifold and vacuum pump.(during the disconnection, please be cautious not to lose any refrigerant and oil.) h. Reinstall the valve caps and service port nuts. CAUTION Figure 12 Refrigerant charging In case of refrigerant charging due to refrigerant leak or service, refer to the nameplate on the outdoor unit. NOTE When the connection pipe is over 7.5m, add refrigerant as following table 3. Note that the shorter connection pipe, the better the performance of the system. The maximum allowable height of connection pipe is 15m and length is 25m. 25 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 24 WIRING INDOOR UNIT WIRING a. Pull the air inlet grille toward you and up. (Fig. 13) b. Remove the service cover of control box. c. Connect the interconnecting wire to the wire connector in the control box or terminal box of the indoor unit. d. Connect the sensor connection cord to the sensor connector in the control box of the indoor unit. e. After wiring of the indoor unit, refix the service cover, the grille in the original form. Remove service cover of the outdoor unit and connect the interconnecting wire in the terminal block of the outdoor unit.(see the wiring diagram.) b. Connect main power wires to the terminal block by using field wires. 27 OWNER S AND INSTALLATION MANUAL - 26 FINISHING Bind the connection wire, pipe and/or drain hose together with vinyl tape and wrap with finishing tape. (Fig. 15) If the direction of the interconnecting piping and connection wire is different from the drain hose, they could be directed separately because the condensate drain hose should be directed downward to avoid water dripping. Are there nuts, bolts, instruments and other debris or water in the indoor unit? Is there any obstacle at the drain pan hole and drain hose outlet? Was the filter dirty during installation? 2 Refrigerant piping Do the pipe diameter and length comply with the applicable specification? Is there leakage in the piping joints? Is the gas pipe insulation correctly done? Is the piping installed firmly? 3 Drain hose Are the pipe diameter and the slope comply with the applicable specification? Is the trap installed? Is the insulation to avoid water dripping done at the indoor part? Is the hose installed firmly? 4 Wiring Are the power source, wire, fuse and switch adequate in the installation site? Is the current of control circuit proper? Is the electric insulation of wiring joints correctly done? Does the voltage match for the voltage rating?
