4 1 Introduction The main aim of the 2011 Energy Follow-Up Survey (EFUS) was to collect new data on domestic energy use, in order to update the current modelling assumptions about how energy is used in the home, and to inform energy efficiency policy. The 2011 EFUS consisted of a follow-up interview survey of a sub-set of households first visited as part of the 2010/2011 English Housing Survey (EHS). Additionally, sub-samples of these households were selected to have temperature loggers and electricity consumption monitors installed. A further stage of the EFUS was the compilation of gas and electricity consumption data from meter readings. This documentation accompanies the datasets collected by the EFUS. All users are also advised to refer to the EFUS 2011 Methodology report, and relevant topic reports, to assist in the use of the data. The EFUS 2011 collected data in four areas. These are: a) Data from the EFUS 2011 interview survey b) Data from the EFUS 2011 temperature monitoring subsample c) Data from the EFUS 2011 electricity monitoring subsample d) Data from the EFUS 2011 gas and electricity meter readings subsample The purpose of this documentation is to assist users in the appropriate use of these datasets for analysis. 1

5 2 Overview of data format The primary interview and meter reading data, and derived data from the temperature monitoring, have been produced and formatted using IBM SPSS Statistics and are available as SPSS *.sav files. The primary data from the temperature monitoring have been produced and is available in MS Excel format (*.xls), and the primary data from the electricity monitoring is produced and formatted in comma delimted variable (*.csv) format. It should be noted that users converting these data into other types of files or importing into other software packages may encounter some loss of formatting, metadata, or the loss of parts of the data itself. Each subsample of the dataset is referenced, and sorted by, its own unique identifier. These are listed in Table 1 below. To match to the different components of the survey or the EHS data 1, the matching file.sav or matching files secure.sav lookup tables are used. For details of how to use these files to match data together please see Section 7 of this report. Table 1: Unique IDs used for each dataset Component of survey Interview sample subsample Meter reading subsample Electricity monitoring subsample EHS data (secure matching file only) Unique ID interview_id temperature_id meter_id emonitor_id aacode The interview, temperature, meter reading and combined temperature and meter reading subsamples have been scaled up to represent the national population (and to correct for nonresponse) using weighting factors. The results presented in this report are therefore representative of the English housing stock, with a population of 21.9 million households. Analysis should be conducted using these factors as appropriate. Table 2 lists the relevant weighting factors for each component of the survey Table 2: Unique IDs used for each dataset Component of survey Interview sample subsample Meter reading subsample Combined temperature and meter reading subsample Weighting factor InterviewWeight Weight MeterReadWeight MeterWeight Missing values are declared within each SPSS data file. For interview sample primary and derived data and the temperature subsample derived data these are -88 (unknown) and -99 (not applicable). It should be noted that SPSS variables declared with a date data-type (e.g. on and off timings) will convert these missing values into a date format (-00:00:01). For meter reading subsample derived data missing values are declared as -1 (not applicable). Following an assessment of data disclosure risk by the Office of National Statistics, parts of the data are marked as secure and are only available for analysis under secure conditions (e.g. the Secure Data Service). 1 Matching to EHS data can only permitted under secure conditions (e.g. the Secure Data Service). 2

6 3 The interview data The 2011 EFUS interview data contains responses from 2,616 households on aspects of energy use in their homes. See the EFUS 2011 Methodology report for details of the interview survey and the questionnaire. The interview dataset consists of two types of data: a) Primary data. These correspond directly to responses from the interview survey. b) Derived data. These data have been produced through manipulation of the primary data in order to produce the 2011 EFUS topic reports. The primary data corresponds directly to the interview survey questionnaire (see Appendix A of the EFUS Methodology report for the full questionnaire). The primary data variable names match the questionnaire numbering. The questionnaire also includes the names of the data files which contain each component of the primary data. Derived data have been produced in the course of the production of the EFUS 2011 topic reports. These are provided as part of the dataset to facilitate secondary analysis of some of the most complex areas of the interview (main, alternative and supplementary ), and users are advised to use to the appropriate derived variables where available. All cases on all interview datasets are referenced by the interview survey unique identifier (interview_id). For users wishing to combine the interview data with other data (e.g. temperature data, meter reading data or EHS data), the matching file.sav or matching file secure.sav lookup tables are used. Use of these tables is described in section 7 below. When conducting analysis on the interview files, users should weight the data by the interview weighting (InterviewWeight), which can be found in the interview weight.sav file. Three interview data files are marked as secure and can only be accessed via a secure mechanism (e.g. the Secure Data Service). The secure interview data includes details on the supplier name and reported tariff of the households, and variables for users wishing to adjust the EHS base data on household age, type, income and composition, based on the EFUS responses. An overview of the interview data files is shown in Table 2 below. The derived data for each component of the survey are shown in the Tables 3 to 7 below. 3

25 4 The temperature data The EFUS 2011 monitored temperatures over the course of approximately one year in approximately 823 dwellings. The EFUS temperature dataset consists of primary temperature data (823 data files in MS Excel format) and two SPSS data files containing derived data. The Excel data files contain the internal temperatures measured in each room in each dwelling monitored, recorded at twenty minute intervals. See the EFUS 2011 Methodology Report for more details of the temperature monitoring. There is one version of each Excel file for each dwelling in the temperature monitoring sample. Each file is labelled with the unique identifier for the temperature survey (temperature_id), and contains a time and date stamp for each interval in each room (all temperature are in C). The start and end of the data has been trimmed to exclude blank data recorded in the period before and after the loggers were installed. All times in the primary data are British Summer Time. The derived SPSS files contain: 1) Mean room temperatures (Mean room temperatures.sav) 2) data derived patterns ( ) The mean room temperature data are mean temperatures for each month, averaged from all readings returned from within that month. Variables provided are means of all days, of weekdays only and of weekend days only for each room in November 2011, December 2011 and January Adjustments to account for the change from British Summer Time were made prior to averaging of the data. More details on the calculation of mean room temperatures can be found in the EFUS 2011 Methodology Report and EFUS 2011 Mean Household s report. The patterns variables are the start and end times of, the temperatures at the beginning and end of periods, and the season as identified from the temperature data. Adjustments to account for the change from British Summer Time were made prior to the processing of these data. More details on the derivation of patterns from the temperature data can be found in the EFUS 2011 Methodology Report and EFUS 2011 Main Heating report. All cases on all temperature datasets are referenced by the interview survey unique identifier (temperature_id). For users wishing to combine the temperature data with other data (e.g. interview or meter reading data), the matching file.sav and matching file secure.sav lookup tables should be used. Use of these tables is described in section 7 below. When conducting analysis on the temperature files, users should normally weight the data by the temperature weighting variable (Weight), which can be found in the weight.sav file. When conducting analysis relevant to both temperature and meter readings, users should normally weight the data by the combined temperature and meter reading weighting variable (MeterWeight), which can be found in the meter reading weight.sav file 3. Derived temperature variables are described in Table 8 below. 3 n.b. the meter reading.sav file uses the temperature_id identifier 22

34 5 The metered consumption data The EFUS meter reading dataset consists of two data files. These contain: 1) Derived total annualised gas and electricity consumption (Metered consumption.sav) 2) Gas and electricity meter readings, period between readings and derived electricity tariffs (Metered consumption secure.sav) Annualised gas and electricity consumptions provide an estimate of the total annual consumption of the meter reading cases. It is anticipated that the majority of analysts will wish to use these data. For more information on the production of annualised gas and electricity consumption please see the EFUS 2011 Methodology report and EFUS 2011 Metered fuel consumption report. Additional analysis may be required using the meter readings themselves. These are included in the Metered consumption secure.sav data file. This file also includes derived tariff information used in the EFUS 2011 Household Underspend analysis. For more information on the production of tariff data see the EFUS 2011 Household Underspend report. All cases on all metered consumption datasets are referenced by the metered consumption unique identifier (meter_id). For users wishing to combine the metered consumption data with other data (e.g. interview or the temperature data), the matching file.sav and matching file secure.sav lookup tables should be used. Use of these tables is described in section 7 below. When conducting analysis on the metered consumption files, users should weight the data by the metered consumption weight (MeterReadWeight), which can be found in the meter read weight.sav file. When conducting analysis relevant to cases with both temperature and meter readings, users should weight the data by the combined temperature and meter reading weight (MeterWeight), which can be found in the meter reading weight.sav file 4. Data derived from the meter reading are described in Table 9 below. 4 n.b. the meter reading weight.sav file uses the temperature_id identifier 31

Some cleaning of these data has been done by consolidating information from multiple data sources (follow-up reads, meter point data etc.). See EFUS 2011 Methodology report for more details. Second gas meter reading. Typically obtained from follow-up readings. Some cleaning of these data has been done by consolidating information from multiple data sources (follow-up reads, meter point data etc.). See EFUS 2011 Methodology report for more details of collection of metered data. First standard / on peak meter reading. Typically obtained from the EHS. Some cleaning of these data has been done by consolidating information from multiple data sources (follow-up reads, meter point data etc.). See EFUS 2011 Methodology report for more details of collection of metered data. Second standard / on peak meter reading. Typically obtained from follow-up readings. Gas tariff (p/kwh) (Derived from Consumer Futures April 2011 data for Underspend analysis) Electricity tariff (p/kwh) (Derived from Consumer Futures April 2011 data for Underspend analysis). Note that for household with off peak (Economy 7) electricity this single tariff is derived by assuming 55% night time usage. 33

37 6 The electricity monitoring data The EFUS 2011 monitored electricity consumption at ten-second intervals in 79 dwellings using electricity current clamps and loggers. See the EFUS 2011 Methodology report and EFUS 2011 Domestic appliances, cooking & cooling equipment report for more details. The data stored on each of the logger s memory cards has been extracted and processed to produce a set of primary data for each dwelling. The start and end of the data has been trimmed to exclude blank data recorded in the period before and after the loggers were installed. The primary data are presented as 79 folders (one for each dwelling monitored) which contain comma separated variables (*.csv) files. Each day of data is contained in each *.csv file. Each data series is identified by:- Monitor No-Year_Month_Day e.g _03_25 Where the monitor number denotes a unique household, with the numbering corresponding to the unique identifier contained in the matching file.sav and matching file secure.sav files 5. Each data file has four columns of data as shown in Table 10 below. Table 10: Format of electricity monitoring data files Column number Description Electricity monitor ID Date Time Reading (emonitor_id) Format Number MM/DD/YY HH:MM:SS Watts Example /25/11 13:11: The appropriate calibration factor (calculated for each monitor) has been applied to the Watts column. Each day recorded consists of 8,640 readings. All cases on all temperature datasets are referenced by the interview survey unique identifier (monitor_id). For users wishing to combine the monitor data with other data (e.g. interview or meter reading data), the matching file.sav and matching file secure.sav lookup tables should be used. Use of these tables is described in section 7 below. Due to the relatively few cases in this subsample, no weighting factors have been created for the electricity monitoring data. 5 Note that logger numbers within the *.csv do not contain the prefix E of the unique identifier. 34

38 7 Use of the matching file.sav lookup tables. Each subsample of the dataset is referenced, and sorted by, its own unique identifier. These are listed in Table 11 below. To allow matching of the different components of the survey, the matching file.sav and matching file secure.sav lookup tables are used. Table 11: Unique IDs used for each dataset Component of survey Interview sample subsample Meter reading subsample Electricity monitoring subsample EHS data ( matching file secure.sav only) Unique ID interview_id temperature_id meter_id emonitor_id aacode The following procedure demonstrates how to match different components of the survey together in SPSS. A similar procedure should be followed using other analysis packages (e.g. SAS, R etc). This example is for the analysis of the interview and temperature data together. The same procedure (substituting meter_id, emonitor_id, or aacode for the interview_id or temperature_id ) is followed for other combinations. a) Open the matching file.sav file. b) Sort the data in ascending order by interview_id. c) Merge in the interview data files required. Match data on key variables of interview_id. d) Sort the data in ascending order by temperature_id. e) Merge in the temperature data required. Match data on key variables of temperature_id, ensuring that the merge selects that the option that the non-active dataset (i.e. the temperature data) is selected as the keyed table to prevent duplicate key errors. f) A final (optional) step is to delete from the working dataset those cases which are not in the temperature sample to remove cases which will not be analysed. 35
