4 Read all instructions in the manual before assembling or using your vacuum cleaner WARNING Your safety is important to us. To reduce the risk of fire, electrlcal shock, injury to persons or damage when using your vacuum cleaner, follow basic safety precautions. Use your vacuum cleaner only as described in this guide. Use only with Sears recommended attachments. Disconnect electrical supply before servicing or cleaning out the agitator area. Failure to do so could result in the agitator unexpectedly starting, causing personal injury from moving parts. Do not leave vacuum cleaner when plugged in. Unplug from outlet when not in use and before performing maintenance, To reduce the risk of electrical shock - Do not use outdoors or on wet surfaces. Do not allow to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when used by or near children. Do not use with a damaged cord or plug. If vacuum cleaner is not working as it should, has been dropped, damaged, left outdoors, or dropped in water, return it to a Sears Service Center. Do not pull or carry by cord, use cord as a handle, close a door on cord, or pull cord around sharp edges or corners. Do not run vacuum cleaner over cord. Keep cord away from heated surfaces. Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp the plug, not the cord. Do not handle plug or vacuum cleaner with wet hands. Do not put any objects into openings. Do not use with any opening blocked; keep free of dust, lint, hair, and anything that may reduce air flow. Keep hair, loose clothing, fingers, and all parts of body away from openings and moving parts. Turn off all controls Use extra care when cleaning before unplugging. on stairs. Do not put on chairs, tables, etc. Keep on floor. Do not use vacuum cleaner to pick up flammable or combustible liquids (gasoline, cleaning fluid, perfumes, etc.), or use in areas where they may be present. The fumes from these substances can create a fire hazard or explosion. Do not pick up anything that is burning or smoking, such as cigarettes, matches, or hot ashes. Do not use vacuum cleaner without dust cup and/or filters in place. Always empty the dust cup after vacuuming carpet cleaners or freshener, powders, and fine dust. These products clog the filters, reduce airflow and can cause damage to the vacuum cleaner. Failure to empty the dust cup could cause permanent damage to the vacuum cleaner. Do not use the vacuum cleaner to pick up sharp hard objects, small toys, pins, paper clips, etc. They may damage the vacuum cleaner or dust bag. Unplug before connecting Pet Handi- Mate. Hold plug when rewinding onto cord reel. Do not allow plug to whip when rewinding. You are responsible for making sure that your vacuum cleaner is not used by anyone unable to operate it properly. Failure to do so could result in electrlcal shock or injury. Before assembling the vacuum cleaner, check the PACKING LIST. (Page 2) Use this list to verify that you have received all the components of your new Kenmore vacuum cleaner. HANDLE Do not CAUTION overtighten. '2. Insert handle with locking notch to the back of the vacuum cleaner as shown. 3. Insert handle screw. Overtlghtening could strip the screw holes. Do not operate the vacuum cleaner w_thout the screw in place. DO NOT plug in until assembly is complete. 1. Remove handle screw from handle. ---Handle 4. Tighten handle screw. -6-

7 HOSE AND WAND CAUTION Do not operate the agitator without the wand properly inserted into the wand holder and the hose handle properly secured in the hose holder Place the wand into the wand holder and press firmly onto nozzle hose. Route hose in the hose holders as shown. 1. Remove the hose from the nozzle hose. Hose Wand Holder 2. Insert the tab on the wand into the "J" slot on the hose. Twist the wand to lock in place. 9 CAUTION Moving parts! To reduce the risk of personal injury, DO NOT touch the agitator when vacuum cleaner is on. Contacting the agitator while it is rotating can cut, bruise or cause other injuries. Always turn off and unplug from electrlcal outlet before servicing. Use caution when operating near children. POWER CORD, WARNING Personal Injury and Product Damage Hazard DO NOT place hands or feet under the vacuum cleaner at any time. DO NOT plug in if switch is in ON position. Personal injury or property damage could result. The cord moves rapidly when rewinding. Keep children away and provide a clear path when rewinding the cord to prevent personal injury. DO NOT use outlets above counters, Damage from cord to items in surrounding area could occur, When any abnormality/failure occurs, stop using the product immediately and disconnect the power plug. NOTE: To reduce the risk of electrical shock, this vacuum cleaner has a polarized plug, one blade is wider than the other. This plug will fit in a polarized outbet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. DO NOT CHANGE WAY, Only use outlets THE PLUG IN ANY near the floor. -9-

10 CORD REEL 1. Pull power cord out of vacuum cleaner to desired length. To Rewind: 1. Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner. 2. Hold the plug while rewinding to prevent damage or injury from the moving cord. 3. Press the cord release button allowing cord reel to retract. 2. Plug the polarized power cord into a 120 Volt outlet located near the floor. 3. Make sure the power cord is placed into the locking notch as shown. _ Handle h ON/OFF SWITCH CAUTION To turn vacuum cleaner on or off, press on the on/off switch. Refer to your carpet manufacturers cleaning recommendations. Some more delicate carpets may require that they be vacuumed with the agitator turned off, to prevent carpet damage. i CAUTION _Do not allow vacuum cleaner to remain _in one spot for any length of time when _the agitator is turning. Damage to carpet may occur. J/Off Switch

11 ADJUSTING THE HANDLE Step on nozzle top and pull back to change handle position. Move vacuum cleaner to middle position for normal use. Move vacuum cleaner to upright position for storage and tool use. Use low position for cleaning under furniture. Step on nozzle top and pull back to change from normal use position to low position. ATTACHMENTS _CAUTION DO NOT overextend your reach with NOTE: Hold the handle to support the vacuum cleaner when using tools and disconnecting or attaching the hose. 1. Place the vacuum cleaner in the upright lock position. 2. Disconnect the hose & wand from the vacuum cleaner. 3. Pull the wand gently in the direction of the arrow to disconnect. It may be necessary to slightly twist the hose handle to loosen from the nozzle hose, Wand m Hose I AUTION _Do not allow vacuum cleaner to remain _in one spat for any length of time when _the agitator is turning. Damage to carpet may occur

12 TELESCOPING WAND 1. Rotate the locking ring to the UNLOCK position. '2. Extend wand to full length 3. Rotate the locking ring to the LOCI( position. Crevice tool, dusting brush or Pet Handi- Mate can attach to either wand or hose. i Hose i Crevice Tool --- )1_ ' 7 I I I Dusting Brush L Telesoping Wand I Upper Wand TO OPERATE SUCTION CONTROL SLIDE When using attachments for cleaning draperies, smalls rugs with low pile, and other delicate items, rotate the suction control slide to the open position. This slide is located on the telescoping wand, close to the hose. See view above. This will reduce suction for ease of cleaning. NOTE: Return suction control slide to the closed position for normal cleaning. Handi-Mate For additional reach, the dusting brush may be attached to the end of the crevice tool. Brush YCrevice To achieve maximum reach with attachments, add the crevice tool to the end of the wand by inserting and twisting slightly. _,,j Crevice _\_Telescoping _CAUTION Selector should be placed in BARE FLOOR (TOOLS) position when using vacuum cleaner on bare floors and when using tools. CARPET/BARE FLOOR SELECTOR i caut,o. m In_e ing may damage floor. Floor Selector Carpet/Bare I Selector should be placed in BARE FLOOR (TOOLS) position when using vacuum cleaner on bare floors and when using tools. The agitator does not rotate in the BARE FLOOR (TOOLS) position. Selector should be placed in CARPET position when using vacuum cleaner on carpeted floors. -13-

14 EDGE CLEANING This model is equipped with an edge cleaning feature for cleaning carpet edges near baseboards and stationary furniture. AUTOMATIC ADJUSTING NOZZLE The nozzle of your vacuum cleaner automatically adjusts to any carpet pile height. Feature allows nozzle to float evenly over carpet pile surfaces. Deep Pile Carpet Shallow Pile Carpet No manual adjustments required. THERMAL PROTECTOR This vacuum cleaner has o thermal protector which automatically trips to protect the vacuum cleaner from overheating. If a clog prevents the normal flow of air to the motor, the thermal protector turns the motor off automatically. This allows the motor to cool in order to prevent possible damage to the vacuum cleaner. Check for and remove clogs, if necessary (See REMOVING CLOGS p ). Also check and replace any clogged filters and empty dust cup, if necessary. Wait approximately fifty (50) minutes and then plug the vacuum cleaner in and turn back on to see if the motor protector has reset. TO CORRECT PROBLEM: Turn the vacuum cleaner off and unplug the power cord from the outlet to allow the vacuum cleaner to cool and the thermal protector to reset

15 Always follow all safety precautions when performing maintenance to the vacuum cleaner. WARNING Electrical Shock And Personal Injury Hazard Disconnect electrical supply before servicing or cleaning the vacuum cleaner. Failure to do so could result in electrical shock or personal injury from vacuum cleaner suddenly starting. CLEANING EXTERIOR AND ATTACHMENTS 1. Turn off and unplug vacuum cleaner. DO NOT drip water on vacuum cleaner. '2. To clean exterior, or to reduce static electricity and dust build-up, wipe outer surface of vacuum cleaner and attachments. Use a clean, soft cloth that has been dipped in a solution of mild liquid detergent and water, then wrung dry. Wipe dry after cleaning. Wash attachments in warm soapy water, rinse and air dry. Do not clean in dishwasher. CAUTION Do not use attachments if they are wet. Attachments used in dirty areas, such as under a refrigerator, should not be used on other surfaces untll they are washed. They could leave marks. EMPTYING DUST CUP Always empty the dust cup when dirt level reaches the "MAX" line. 3. Lift up and out to remove dust cup from vacuum cleaner. 1. Grasp the handle on the top of the dust cup. 2. Press the dust cup release button. Dust Cup Release Button-- _Line = 15 =

16 CAUTION Be sure to hold the dust cup over a proper trash container prior to releaslng the door of the dust cup. TO REPLACE DUST CUP 1. After the dust cup is empty of debris, firmly close the door. Make sure you hear a "click" sound to indicate that the door is fully latched. 4. Press dust cup lid release. The dust cup will open and the debris will fall out. Latch D Door '2. Place dust cup back into vacuum cleaner by inserting the bottom first and tilting back. 3. Push forward and lower dust cup handle to lock dust cup in place. 5. Remove any clogs that might be located in the pre-filter. (See CLEANING PRE-FILTER, p. 17) 6. Shake the dust cup to release any debris that might hang in the pre-filter - 16-

17 CLEANING PRE-FILTER 1. Make sure the dust cup is empty. 2. Rotate dust cup lid assembly to unlock (as indicated on the lid), and lift off. LOCKED (For Use) To Reinstall: 1. Align the slot on the pre-filter with the alignment tab inside dust cup. - Tabs Slots 2. Rotate pre-filter clockwise to lock in place. UNLOCKED (For Cleaning) 3. Grasp pre-fitter and rotate counterclockwise to remove. LOCKED (For Use) UNLOCKED (For cleaning) 3. Reinstall dust cup lid and turn to locked position (as indicated on the lid). LOCKED (For Use) 4. Clean pre-filter by gently tapping over a trash container. UNLOCKED (For Cleaning) 5. Rinse with water only as needed, do not use any detergent or soap. 6. Allow pre-filter to dry for 24 hours before placing back into vacuum cleaner

18 CLEANING PRIMARY FILTER It is recommended to clean the filter with cold water at least every month. Check the primary filter frequently and clean when dirty. 1. Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner, 2. Remove dust cup (See EMPTYING DUST CUP, p ). 3. Pull the dust cup lid latch and open the lid. Dust Cup 6. Once the filter is washed clean, squeeze by hand and allow to air dry. Z Allow filter to dry for 24 hours before placing back into vacuum cleaner. NOTE: When the cleaning of the filter no longer restores vacuum cleaner suction to full power, replace the filter. NOTE: See REPLACEMENT PARTS for part number detail (page 5). DO NOT operate without primary filter installed. DO NOT wash in the dishwasher. DO NOT install damp. TO REPLACE FILTER Dust Cup Lid 1. Place the primary filter into the dust cup lid. Filter 4. Remove the primary filter. Filter 2. Close the dust cup lid. Be sure the lid snaps in place. A noticeable "click" should be heard. 3. Reinstall the dust cup into the vacuum cleaner (See EMPTYING DUST CUP, p. ]5-]6). 5. Wash with cold water only, DO NOT use detergent or soap

19 REPLACING HEPA MEDIA EXHAUST FILTER WARNING Always unplug power cord from electrical outlet before performing any service on vacuum cleaner. The HEPA media exhaust filter removes dirt from exhaust air. Check filter after emptying dust cup. Replace when dirty. Filter cannot be cleaned and should be replaced at least once each year. NOTE: See REPLACEMENTPARTSfor part number detail (page 5). 1. Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner. 2. Press latch to remove exhaust filter cover. TO REPLACE FILTER 1.Place the new filter into the vacuum cleaner with the foam seal down. 2. Be sure air flow arrow on filter is pointing upward. 3. Reinstall the exhaust filter cover by inserting the tab into the slot in the vacuum cleaner. Press firmly to snap exhaust filter cover into place. _Slot 3. Grasp the exhaust filter and pull out to remove. Filter - 19-

20 REPLACING BELT WARNING Always unplug power cord from electrical outlet before performing any service on vacuum cleaner. Replace belt whenever a burning rubber smell caused by excessive slippage occurs, i AUTION Motor shaft may be hot. 5. Place the vacuum in the upright position standing on the handle. This witl minimize wheel interference when removing nozzle bottom plate. Remove nozzle bottom plate by rotating upward. NOTE: See REPLACEMENT PARTS for part number detail (page 5). 1. Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner. '2. Lay vacuum cleaner on floor with the bottom up and nozzle flat. 3. Remove nozzle hose from body by (l) pressing in locking tab and (2) sliding up and out of retaining slot (see REMOVING CLOGS, p ). 6. Lay vacuum cleaner on floor with the bottom up with nozzle flat. 7. Remove agitator by carefully lifting out. Motor Shaft gitator 4. Remove the four screws from the nozzle cover. Four ' Belt 8. Remove worn or broken belt. 9. Clean agitator (see CLEANING AGITATOR, p. 22)

21 1. Loop new bett around Carpet/Bare Floor selector shaft and agitator belt groove. Make sure belt is routed in the belt guide as shown. See illustration for correct belt routing. 5. Reinstall lower plate by (1) aligning tabs on front edge of lower plate with slots in the nozzle and (2) rotating to installed position. Carpet/Bare Floor Selector S 2. Reinstall agitator back into nozzle by placing end caps into grooves. 6. Lay vacuum cleaner on the floor with the bottom up and nozzle flat. 7. Install the four screws to the nozzle covet Four End Cap Groove 3. After reinstalling the agitator, turn it by hand to make sure that belt is not twisted or pinched and that all rotating parts turn freely. 4. Place the vacuum cleaner in the upright position standing on the handle. This will minimize wheel interference when installing lower plate. 8. Route nozzle hose to hose holder. Align nozzle hose bracket with retaining bracket on body and slide down unit it clicks into place. 9. Return the vacuum cleaner to the upright position before plugging into an electrical outlet

22 CLEAN ING AGITATOR WARNING Always unplug power cord from electrical outlet before performing any servlce on vacuum cleaner. 1. Clean agitator after every five uses and every time the belt is replaced. 2. Remove lower plate. (See REPLACING p ). BELT, 3. Cut off any hair, _ thread, string, carpet pile, and lint entangled around agitator with a pair of scissors. 4. Remove agitator. (See REPLACING BELT,p ) 5. Remove any string or debris located on the end caps, washers or agitator shaft. 6. Reinstall agitator and lower plate. (See REPLACING BELT, p ) REMOVING CLOGS CLOGS IN BODY AIR PATH if the vacuum cleaner does not seem to have adequate suction, first check if the dust cup is full or if a filter is clogged. 1. Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner. 2. Remove dust cup and check for clogs. 3. Check the hose inlet area. 4. Visually inspect the tools, the hose, and the nozzle hose area into which the hose is connected. 5. Check the suction inlet area. 6. Remove any visible clog. 7. Reinstall dust cup and plug in the vacuum cleaner and turn it on. Suction Nozzle Hose Inlet =22 =

23 8. Stretch the hose to maximum length and then allow the hose to return to its storage length, CLOGS IN NOZZLE AIR PATH 1. Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner. 2. Remove nozzle hose from body by (1) pressing in locking tab and (2) sliding up and out of retaining slot. If the dust cup and filter areas and the hose areas are free of clogs, check the nozzle air path. 3. Inspect inlet of nozzle hose and clear any obstructions. 4. Replace nozzle hose by sliding down on retaining bracket until you hear a click. 5. Return the vacuum cleaner to the upright position before plugging into an electrical outlet. -23-

44 CAMBIO DEL FILTRO DE ESCAPE HEPA ADVERTENCIA Desconecte la aspiradora antes de darle servlclo o limplarla. El filtro de escape HEPA quita el polvo det aire reciclado. Revisar et fittro despu_s de cambiar la bolsa de polvo. Reemplazar cuando este sucio. No se debe limpiar el fittro se debe cambiar a Io menos una vez cada afio. Vet en detalle el nomero de parte en PARTES DE REEMPLAZO (p6g 4). PARA REMPLAZAR ESCAPE HEPA EL FILTRO DE 1. Colocar el nuevo filtro en la aspiradora con el sello de espuma hacia abajo. '2. Asegurarse que la flecha de flujo de aire en et fittro este apuntando hacia arriba. 3. Reinstalar ta cubierto det fittro de escape insertar la leng_jeta en la ranura de la aspirodora. Presione firmemente para cerrar la cubierta del filtro en su lugar. 1. Apague y desconect_ la aspiradora. '2. Presione la lenglieta para quitar la cubierto del fittro de escape Ranura 3. Esto minimizara la interferencia de la ruedas cuando remueva el plato inferior. Remueva el plato inferior rotando la parte trasera hacia arriba. 1. Apague y desconecte la aspiradora, 2. Recostar la aspiradora con la parte de atr6s hacia arriba y la boquilla plana. 3. Remueva la manguera de la boquilla (1) presionando en la pesta5a de bloqueo y (2) deslizando hacia arriba y fuera de la ranura de retenci6n (Ver QUITANDO LOS RESIDUOS DE BASURA EN LOS CONDUCTOS, p6g 21-22). 6. Acueste la aspiradora con la parte trasera hacia arriba y la boquilla plana. 7. Sacar el agitador levant6ndolo cuidadosamente. 4. Remover los cuatro torniltos del plato inferior. " QdOr 8.
