4 This operating manual is meant only as a supplement to the operating manual for the individual machines pulverisette 19 and pulverisette 25 1 Short description of machine function 1.1 Pre-grinder p-25 model 2 Grain size of the feed: The grain size of the feed depends on the grinding ability (the tenacity) of the material to be ground, e.g. metals, tyre rubber, and other tenacious synthetic materials such as PVC, PA, ABS etc. Leather and similar material can only be fed in a small grain size range of 10-30mm. For less tenacious materials like wood, paper, PCB material, minerals, etc. the grain size of the feed can be up to 50mm. Other deciding factors are as follows: Feed quantity /time RPM of the motor and torque Geometry of the slicer blades Sharpness and condition of the slicer blades Gap width between the fixed and rotating blades Sieve size or final fineness, condition of the sieves (degree of obstruction) Air flow-rate (depending on degree of obstruction) For mixed materials such as shredder waste (without metal component), a medium grain size of approx mm is found to be ideal for trouble free operation. A simple bulk material funnel is sufficient for feeding the sample. For woolly material from seat fillings found in automobile shredders, the air current is not sufficiently powerful. Therefore, an additional pushing device must be utilized. 1.2 Sample splitter The sample splitter is intended to lessen the quantity of samples for the fine crusher. This way, the requirements for the repeatability of division are not too high. However, it must be ensured that the sample is not fractioned, that is to say, not pulverized into light and heavy or fine and rough components. The rate of division, that is, the quantity of samples passing through, depends on the sample material and final fineness of the pre-crusher. This is adjusted by covering the openings. 5 1.3 Fine crusher p-19 In view of the similar principle of functioning, the same applies to the fine crusher as in the case of pre-crusher. On the other hand, a narrow sieve mesh can lead to obstructions in the sieve. If the sieve gets pegged, the air current is interrupted and may result in total breakdown of the system. Therefore, the condition of the sieve must always be monitored. As the constant flow of air has a certain drying effect, moderately moist mill feed of approximately 20% humidity can also be fed without causing pegging in the sieve. Experiments to crush oil-contaminated ground samples have failed. 1.4 Suction unit A 1.1 kw fan drives the suction unit. Air is suctioned into a simple cyclone and released into the external air through a 2-step filter. The air quantity (speed) and hence also the cyclone's degree of cutting depends on the condition of the filters and that of the sieves. Gradually, the increasing obstruction in the sieves and filters diminishes the transported quantity of air and consequently the speed of the air. This deteriorates the degree of cutting, which means; more and more rough particles find their way to the filter and do not drop into the sampling jar. On an average, the cutting limit is approximately 10µm, whereas the cutting limit of the first step of filtering is approximately 1µm and that of the second step of filtering, i.e. the Hospital filter is approximately 0.3µm. This makes sure that no bacteria or particles that may affect lungs are blown into the surrounding space. 2 Operational safety The safety precautions as described in Chapter 2 of the Operating Manual for p-19 and p-25 are applicable. 3 Installation 3.1 Mounting rack assembly Both the mounting racks along with the cutting mills are installed one above the other with the p-19 below and the p-25 on top.

The rack for the p-25 is mounted in alignment with the rear side. Both the racks are joined using the supplied M10x110 screws, the 10.5 washers and nuts. Washers are placed to doubly secure the screw head and nut. 3.2 Feed funnel assembly for p-25 The funnel is mounted on the p-25 using four M5 screws and supporting washers. 3.3 Extension tube assembly for p-19 With the thick side pointing downwards, the extension tube is mounted on the inlet tube and tightened with the knurled screw at the bottom. 3.4 Sample splitter assembly for p-25 Both the levers on the clamping ledge below the p-25 are positioned forward and the sample splitter along with the projecting metal edges is slid into the grooves of the ledge. Finally, the levers are toggled backwards and the sample splitter is clamped tightly. The control box for the sample splitter is located on the side of p-25. Connect the 2-pole plug to the socket at the bottom of the sample splitter and lock it. Cutting mill combination pulveristte19 pulverisette 25 page 3

7 3.5 Suction adapter assembly for p-19 Follow the same method while assembling this as in the sample splitter assembly for p Suction unit assembly The rack for the suction unit is positioned on the left next to the cutting mills and the suction unit along with the cyclone pointing downwards is placed into the circular opening on the mounting sheet. For easy dismantling and cleaning purposes, the suction unit is not fixed to the rack. Slide the hose on to the metal supports on the suction unit and slide the other end over the funnel below the p-19. Screw on the sampling jar at the end of the cyclone, Caution: When using 1 or 2 liter jars, an adapter must be used. 3.7 Power connection Connect all devices to the included junction box and plug in the cable to a 3-phase power point. 3.8 Switching on for the first time Connect all devices and switch on one after the other (without cutting tools) and check for proper functioning. Refer to Chapters 4.3 to 4.6 on working with different feed funnels and suction units. 4.1 Setting up the sample splitter The rotating metal hood of the sample splitter has 6 boreholes, which can be closed using plastic caps. The ratio of division can be adjusted by closing or opening the boreholes. The more the number of openings closed, the lesser the mill feed reaches the fine crusher p-19 and vice versa. The user must ascertain the correct ratio of division individually. The RPM can be set using the turning knob on the control housing. The RPM must be set relatively high to prevent mill feed from remaining stationary on the metal hood. It depends on the grain size and the density of the sampling material. 9 5 Cleaning We recommend using a vacuum cleaner equipped with different nozzles for cleaning the machine, a small nozzle especially for cleaning areas that are difficult to access, and brushes of various sizes. This way, dirt can be brushed into the vacuum cleaner nozzle. Inaccessible areas can also be blown clean with compressed air. When working with moist mill feed or, if very fine mill feed is inside the machine, use a damp cloth to wipe the surface clean. Refer to Chapter 5 of the Operating Manual of p-19 and p-25 for instructions on cleaning the different components. 5.1 Cleaning the sample splitter To empty the sample splitter, a large, rectangular container is placed in front of the p-19 and the closures on the side of the sample splitter housing are opened. The bottom of the sample splitter housing is now turned downwards and the metal hood is taken off. The mill feed can now be brushed into the container.
