4 Tracing the story back 300 years. Almost all casting takes place at Coalbrookdale, the Shropshire cradle of the Industrial Revolution, where in 1709, Abraham Darby first smelted iron using coke. The latest AGA is made the same way; pouring molten iron into a mould to create cast-iron. It s the iron that s responsible for the unique heat-retention properties which are intrinsic to the way an AGA cooks. Today, every new AGA is both 70 percent made from recycled materials and is 70 percent future recyclable. We continually strive towards greater environmental sustainability and energy efficiency. For instance, our 13-amp electric AGA and some gas models are, thanks to AIMS - the AGA Intelligent Management System, programmable for greater control and versatility. We re even working on solar and wind power as well as other alternative energies. While our factory is only a few miles from Abraham Darby s first foundry, we ve come a long way in 300 years. 5 Why AGA food tastes better Beneath the classic looks of every AGA is a heart of cast-iron: the entire cooker is an outstandingly efficient energy store, steadily transferring the heat from its core into its ovens and hotplates. It utilises a gentler process which preserves the food s moisture, flavour, texture and goodness. An AGA is always ready to cook. Thermostatic control maintains consistent temperatures while high levels of insulation, within the outer casing and beneath the hotplates insulated covers, ensure every AGA uses fuel economically. Heat is transferred into the cast- iron ovens and released steadily from all the inner surfaces simultaneously. This is an altogether kinder process than the fierce, direct heat from the elements or flames in most ovens. Should you choose the 2-oven AGA, then one oven shares the duties of baking and roasting. In a 3 or 4-oven model there are separate ovens for these activities. The fourth oven is a warming oven designed to keep food piping hot without drying it out, while also ideal for warming plates and serving dishes. The simmering oven is integral to all models and is ideal for slow cooking. On its top, every AGA has boiling and simmering plates beneath the two distinctive insulated covers. When finished producing perfectly cooked, delicious food the traditional AGA way, these models can ease into slumber mode. Then, when it s time to prepare the next meal, it wakes up so that it s ready whenever you are. AIMS, the AGA Intelligent Management System, works by optimising power - good news for your energy bill, and the environment. And because it is totally programmable, it has no problem coping with different schedules on different days and can even accommodate holidays. 7 2-oven AGA The perfect demonstration of quality and versatility. At just under a metre wide, it s more compact than you d imagine. Whatever the power source, all AGAs cook in the same unique, gentle way, delivering delicious results time after time. And they all suit every style of kitchen. The 2-oven 13-amp electric AGA is the latest addition to the collection and is fitted with AIMS, the AGA Intelligent Management System. The 2-oven Night Storage AGA also benefits from using off-peak electricity as the source of its power. And for even greater flexibility, every 2-oven AGA can be combined with either an integrated or a freestanding module. 8 3-oven AGA The same size as the 2-oven AGA, the 3-oven AGA has the added versatility of a third oven for baking. Like all AGAs, the 3-oven model features two insulated hotplates. Closed, the insulated covers are warm to the touch. Open, and both hotplates are instantly ready to cook. The top righthand oven roasts, grills and bakes, and can accommodate anything as large as a 28lb/13kg turkey. At the bottom right is the simmering oven, where casseroles and vegetables can be left to improve even overnight while you focus on other tasks. Bottom left is the baking oven. Every 3-oven AGA can also be combined with either an integrated or freestanding module. 9 4Works in exactly the same way as the 2 and 3-oven AGA. It simply offers even more flexibility. WARMING PLATE OPTIONS WARMING PLATE OPTIONS Two burner gas hob. Two element electric ceramic hob. 4-oven AGA Like all other AGAs, the 4-oven model has two insulated covers, which are warm to the touch and conceal hotplates that are instantly ready to cook. The left hand hotplate boils water faster than most electric kettles thanks to the high heat, and is large enough to hold three average-sized saucepans at once. Another useful feature of the 4-oven AGA is the choice of either a warming plate or hob. The warming plate is useful to serve from, whilst the hob provides even more cooking options. The hob can be specified as either gas or electric ceramic. In addition to the roasting, simmering and baking ovens found on the 3-oven AGA, the 4-oven possesses an additional warming oven. So it s possible to deliver the most complicated meal without food getting cold or drying out. The 4-oven AGA can also be specified with either an integrated or freestanding module. 10 AGA CLASSIC SPECIAL EDITION styled on the iconic AGA of the 1930s Everything is almost as it was, from the lever control (non-operating as a modern AGA doesn t need it) to the matching enamel hotplate covers and the period AGA badge. This 4-oven special edition AGA model is supplied, as it was in the 1930s, only in cream. It is available in two, three - or four-oven versions with all of today s refinements, including a choice of heat sources and flues, a gas or electric ceramic hob (only in place of the 4-oven warming plate) and integrated and freestanding module enhancements. Emma is a life long AGA fan, she writes; The first kitchen I can remember was painted the colour of blackcurrant fool (the instruction my mum gave the surprised painters) and we had a large white AGA which was fed with nuts of coke from a coal scuttle that needed riddling night and morning, followed by the familiar small scale drama of the emptying out of a tray of red hot ash to cries of stand back! Our clothes hung up to dry on a rack above, the bantams wandered in and out under the disdainful gaze of Alfie the Siamese cat and Mum rolled out pastry for treacle tarts, quiches and other 60s staples on the white Formica. Since then there have been several other crucial kitchens in my life and almost all of them have had an AGA to lean on. So when I set out to make kitchen china, before the first designs came the clear mental picture of the scrubbed kitchen table, the wide shelves of the dresser, and of course the AGA, which set the scene. With this in mind, it feels completely right to be working with the friendly AGA people; in fact I can t think why we did not think of it ages ago! Our recent visit to their foundry was a huge excitement for me. This part of Shropshire, known as Coalbrookdale, really is the cradle of our Industrial Revolution and to discover that from start to finish every AGA is made here, by hand, by skilful craftspeople, just as cooking ranges have been made for British kitchens ever since we stopped cooking over an open fire-well I could not have been more thrilled. FREESTANDING MODULE The freestanding module (shown left) is designed to stand alone or fit within standard kitchen furniture. It offers a range of cooking options with a conventional oven and integral grill, fan oven, a gas or electric ceramic hob and can be sited anywhere in the kitchen as the perfect companion to your choice of AGA. Alternatively, the integrated module (shown below) is built with the same care and attention to detail as your AGA and available in the same 14 colour options. The heat storage principle is simple, tried-and-tested and designed by Nobel award winning scientist and inventor, Dr Gustaf Dalén, over 80 years ago. Heat Conducting Plates Direct heat from the barrel to other areas of the AGA. The heat conducting plate from the barrel to below the roasting oven means the oven floor is wonderfully hot for authentic pizzas, moreover apple pies have a crisp browned base, even in a ceramic dish. Heat Indicator Attached to the top of the roasting oven the heat indicator shows the amount of stored heat in the AGA. Base Plate Everything needs a good foundation. 15 Why any similarity to previous models is entirely intentional. Your new AGA is made the same way today as it s always been made, by pouring molten iron into moulds. It gives the castings their characteristic surface (every one unique) and sets the AGA apart from the usual mass-produced uniformity. While most manufacturers spray paint a cooker in seconds, it still takes us three days to apply the multiple protective coats of gleaming vitreous enamel that help ensure the working life of an AGA is measured in decades, not years. Of course, the modern AGA contains state-of-the-art technology and is subject to rigorous quality and adherence to the latest environmental standards. Every AGA component is individually inspected and colour checked before engineers carry out the final buildup in the customer s kitchen, ensuring installation is as quick and hassle-free as possible.
