Care and Cleaning Part Control knobs Cooktop trim Fan cover and filter Vent grate Suggested Cleaning Materials Mild soap and water Soap and water Soap and water, or dishwasher Ammonia RS Rev. 6 General Directions and Recommendations Pull off knobs. Wash gently but do not soak. Dry and return controls to cooktop, making sure to match flat area on the knob to the flat area on shaft. Clean cooktop trim with damp cloth and soapy water. If necessary, clean with nonabrasive cleaners or pads. Dry thoroughly when finished to avoid rusting. Do not use harsh powders, oven cleaners, scouring pads, or steel wool. Fan must be off before removing filter cover. Clean filter and cover with damp cloth and soapy water. To remove grease and dried on soil, soak before cleaning. Rinse and dry after cleaning. Filter and filter cover can be cleaned in dishwasher. Always replace filter and cover before operating cooktop. Place grate in plastic bag. Set cup of ammonia in bag with grate. Do not allow ammonia to touch grate. Seal bag and allow to sit overnight. Wash normally. Caring for the Smoothtop For routine cleaning, allow top to cool before cleansing. Wash surface with a dampened cloth and smoothtop cleaner conditioner. Use another clean damp paper towel to wipe off the cleaner. Use a dry paper towel, buff the smoothtop to make sure all the cleaner conditioner is removed. The smoothtop cleaner conditioner provides a thin layer of protective polish that helps prevent scratching. Do not use a harsh cleanser or steel wool pad. For specific problems, see below. Cleaning the Downdraft The downdraft has both a grate and a filter. Both parts need to be cleaned frequently. Not cleaning often may result in foul odors and a possible fire hazard. Both the filter and grate must be in place when using the downdraft exhaust system. To clean the grate: use warm, soapy water to remove grease and soil from the grate. for built up soil allow grate to soak overnight. to remove stains from the grate, place grate in bag with ammonia in a cup. Do not allow ammonia to touch grate. Allow to sit overnight. use only nonabrasive cleaners when necessary. To clean the filter: wash filter in warm soapy water. filter is dishwasher safe for the upper rack. filter may need to be cleaned more than once to remove excessive grease or soil. replacement filters are available. Problem Cause Removal Brown streaks Cleaning with sponge or cloth containing Normal cleansing (provided above). and specks soiled detergent water. Blackened, burnt on spots Fine brown gray lines, fine scratches or abrasions Smearing or streaking Metal or silver/gray marks Pitting or flaking Hard water spots Spatters or spillovers on a hot cooking area or accidental melting of plastic like a bread bag. Course particles, like salt, become embedded in top if trapped under pan. Using abrasive cleaning materials. Scratches from rough ceramic, glass, or ceramic coated cookware. Using too much smoothtop cleaner conditioner or using a soiled dish cloth. Sliding or scraping metal utensils across top. Boilovers of sugar syrup on a hot smoothtop can cause pitting if not removed immediately. Condensation from cooking can cause minerals found in water and acids in food to drip onto smoothtop and cause gray deposits. Spots are often so thin they appear to be in or under smoothtop. Clean area with smoothtop cleaner conditioner with clean damp paper towel, nonabrasive nylon pad, or scouring brush. If spot is not removed, on cool cooktop carefully scrape area with a safety scraper held at a 30-degree angle. Fine scratches are not removable but can be minimized by daily use of smoothtop cleaner conditioner. Follow label instructions carefully. See Routine Cleaning, above. Remove marks before top is used again. If marks are not removed by normal cleaning, use a safety scraper at a 30 angle and cooktop cleaner conditioner to carefully scrape off the mark. Turn control to LOW setting long enough to soften spilled material. Wipe up excess spill with dry cloth. Allow top to cool and carefully scrape area with a safety scraper held at a 30-degree angle. Mix smoothtop cleaner conditioner with water and apply thick paste to stained area. Scrub vigorously. If stain is not removed, reapply cleaner and repeat process OR make sure the surface is cool and put a small amount of white vinegar on the spot and let it sit a few minutes. Use a nonabrasive nylon pad and gently rub the spot. Wipe off any excess with a damp paper towel, then dry.

Operation Setting Surface Element Controls Push and turn the surface element control knobs in either direction to turn on the surface elements. The outer edge of your pan should always cover the element graphic, with a maximum overhang of inch. Surface elements are located under the ceramic cooking surface and radiate heat through the cooktop. The controls have infinite settings between LO and HI for fine temperature control.. Push in and turn surface element control to desired setting. You will see the element turn on and off while you are cooking. This is the element cycling to maintain proper temperature. 2. When finished cooking, turn control to OFF position. Dual Surface Elements Dual surface elements have an inner and outer element that can be set according to the pan size. The outer edge of your pan should always cover the element graphic, with a maximum overhang of inch. To use inner and outer element simultaneously, push and turn knob to double lined side and desired heat setting. To use inner element only, push and turn knob to single line and desired heat setting. After you cook......remember to establish a cleaning routine for your smoothtop. Cooktops can be sensitive to certain cooking spillovers. Unlike conventional cooktops, smoothtops should not be cleaned with a wet dishcloth when wiping down other counters. Daily care is quick, easy and can prevent damage. To purchase Amana recommended cleaning products, contact our Consumer Affairs department at (800) Using Downdraft Ventilation This cooktop utilizes a downdraft ventilation system designed to remove smoke and odors during cooking. Unlike other venting systems, the downdraft exhaust vents to the exterior, allowing for complete removal of cooking odors. The fan is located beneath the vent area in the center of the cooktop.. Turn fan knob to desired speed setting. When flaming foods, downdraft should be turned ON. 2. Turn fan control knob to OFF when cooking is complete. Surface Element Control Settings LO MED HI When to Use Setting Use to prepare food at less than boiling temperatures or to simmer. Use to maintain boiling of larger amounts of food, low temperature frying. Use to bring food to boiling temperatures. When food is boiling temperature setting should be reduced to LO through MED. HI OFF LO Indicator Lights Surface elements are indicated by an indicator light that glows when the element is turned on. The location and number of indicator lights vary with each model. After a surface control is turned off, the surface indicator light will continue to glow until surface elements have cooled to approximately 45 F. The length of time the light remains on will vary. If there is more than one surface element light, do not expect the lights to shut off at the same time. 7 RS Rev.

Testing Procedures! WARNING To avoid electrical shock, personal injury, or death: disconnect power supply before servicing, unless testing requires it. 19 IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION! WARNING To avoid serious burns or other personal injury caused by reaching over heated surface element, avoid locating storage cabinets above surface elements. If cabinet storage is located above surface units, install a range hood that projects horizontally a minimum of 5 inches beyond the cabinet bottom to reduce the risk.! CAUTION To avoid serious burns or other personal injury, do not store items of interest to children above or behind cooktop. Children climbing on cooktop to reach items could be seriously injured.! WARNING To avoid risk of electrical shock, personal injury, or death, make sure cooktop has been properly grounded and always disconnect it from main power supply before any servicing. To avoid risk of electrical shock or personal injury when connecting copper leads to aluminum house wiring, use only connectors designed for joining copper to aluminum. Follow connector manufacturer s recommendations closely. To avoid risk of electrical shock or personal injury, do not ground through neutral wire if installed in mobile home or if local codes do not permit grounding through neutral wire. Minimum Clearances to Combustible Surfaces Underwriter s Laboratories, Inc. specifies this cooktop can be installed as specified in the following diagram. The dimensions provided are to be measured from the cooktop itself, and not the installation cutout for the cooktop. A 30-inches minimum clearance between the top of the cooking surface and the bottom of an unprotected wood or metal cabinet. OR A 24-inches minimum clearance when bottom of wood or metal cabinet is protected by not less than /4-inch thick flame retardant millboard covered with not less than No.28 MSG sheet steel, 0.05 inch thick stainless steel, inch thick aluminum, or inch thick copper. B 0-inches minimum distance between cooktop and wall, cabinet taller than 36 inches or a walkway. C 0-inches minimum distance between cooktop and back wall or backguard. D 2-inches minimum distance between cooktop and edge of countertop. E Minimum of 8-inches between top of countertop and bottom of an unprotected wood or metal cabinet. F Minimum of 30-inches of protected cabinets above the cooktop (refer to letter A). D C A F B E SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS A 5 RS Rev. 0

übefore You Install Consider Description Installation Requirements Location To eliminate the risk of burns or fire by reaching over heated surface units, cabinet storage space located above the surface units should be avoided. If cabinet storage is to be provided, the risk can be reduced by installing a range hood that projects horizontally a minimum of 5 inches beyond the bottom of the cabinets. Use dimensions shown in this manual to determine space needed for installation. Cooktop must not be installed or stored in an area where it will be exposed to water and/or weather. Specialty Countertop Materials Refer to product information for instructions on handling specialty countertop materials such as tile or ceramic. Countertop must be level for proper cooktop installation. Electrical Requirements Electrical Supply Cooktop needs a 3 or 4 wire 240 Volt AC, 60 Hertz AC circuit protected by a separate 30 amp circuit breaker or time delay fuse. Wiring system and grounding must conform to the latest edition of the National Electric Code, ANSI/NFPA 70, or the Canadian Electrical Code, CSA C22.. Installation must conform to all local, municipal and state building codes, and local utility regulations. Connect range to power supply with MAXIMUM RATED VOLTAGE listed on the rating plate. Line voltage must not exceed rated voltage. Copper Wire Conduit is approved for copper wire connection only, NOT aluminum wiring. If aluminum house wiring is to be connected, the following procedure is suggested: Splice copper wires to aluminum wiring using connectors that are design certified by Underwriter s Laboratories and recognized for joining copper to aluminum. Follow the connector manufacturer s recommended procedure. Wire used, location and enclosure of splices must conform to local codes. Junction Box Junction box is not supplied with cooktop. Junction box must be U.L. or C.S.A. listed and meet NEC and Mobile Home Manufacturers Association Standards. Three-conductor junction box allowed for residential in U.S. Four-conductor junction box required in Canada and for most mobile home installations but can be used for residential. NOTE: A power cord must not be used. Questions? See Owner s Manual or call Amana Consumer Affairs at RS Rev. 0 A 6

Duct Length Calculations Ducting length is calculated in terms of straight metal duct. Fittings such as elbows or transition pieces should be limited to 50% of total duct length. Using too many fittings can cause air flow problems. Maximum allowable calculated duct length is 60 equivalent feet. Use Duct Length Piece Equivalents section provided below to calculate duct length. Do not use any duct other than metal. Flexible duct is not recommended because it can create a fire hazard. However, if it is used, one foot of flexible duct is equal to two feet of smooth metal duct. Exterior exhaust opening must be a minimum of foot (2 inches) from an obstruction.
