1 WhisperGen evaporator cleaning This instruction shows how a polluted WhisperGen evaporator can be cleaned with basic tools. The principle is to heat up the parts to burn combustion leftovers and coke. Please also refer to WhisperTech Service Bulletin No. 18. All information in this instruction is additional to this service bulletin. 1. Remove evaporator as per instructions in manual and/or service bulletin. 2. Tools required: Multigrip pliers, small screwdriver, small hammer, knife or suitable scraper, nail, something round slightly smaller in diameter than wick (sparkplug socket), vice or second pair of multigrip pliers, household-type blowlamp (Camping-Gaz or similar, shown, later)

2 3. Disassembling the evaporator: Hold the evaporator flange tight in the vice as shown, or in one of the two multigrip pliers, and remove evaporator cap with multigrip pliers. It is crimped on the evaporator body, not screwed, try to make it turn and pull off while turning. If this does not work, heat the evaporator cap's collar to burn away combustion leftovers. Most of the times, the wick will remain stuck in the cap and it will be impossible to remove it at this stage without damaging it, so do not attempt unless you have spare wicks. 3 4. Cleaning Scrape off the loose dirt (coke) with a knife or suitable scraper 5. Burning away combustion leftovers Hold the evaporator cap + wick gently in the vice and heat it red-hot with the blowlamp to burn all the leftovers and coke On the wick Victron Energy WhisperGen evaporator cleaning Page 3 /10

4 and on the bottom of the cap. This has to be done thoroughly, otherwise the wick will not come loose undamaged. Most of the leftovers and coke are sitting here, pictures below show that it is actually burning away. Victron Energy WhisperGen evaporator cleaning Page 4 /10

5 When done, put the cap + wick away an allow to cool down. Now burn the leftovers and coke in and on the evaporator body. This takes some time to heat up as it is a massive part The nail is fitted in the vice; the evaporator fits on it though its fuel inlet. and put it aside to allow cooling down. 6 You can now remove the wick from the evaporator cap, move/pull/turn it around in the cap, taking care not to deform it. The picture shows almost all the leftovers are burnt and converted into lightbrown coloured, crumbly material. 7 With a knife or suitable scraper, remove burnt coke from the inside of the evaporator cap Scrape the coke leftovers from the wick, taking care again not to deform it. Victron Energy WhisperGen evaporator cleaning Page 7 /10

8 If the wick has been slightly deformed, it can be rectified by tapping it gently with a hammer over a round piece of tube (here, a sparkplug socket), this will also remove the last coal leftovers. Hammer gently, otherwise the material will stretch and the diameter of the wick will increase, it may not fit in the evaporator body again. Hold the wick against the light to check, if it is clean, you can see through it. Once it has cooled off, scrape the coke leftovers from the evaporator body. 9 All three parts are now clean and ready for re-assembly 6. Re-assembly. Insert the wick in the evaporator body, turn it around gently to allow fit as far as it can go. Victron Energy WhisperGen evaporator cleaning Page 9 /10

10 Fit the cap on the body, turn it around gently to allow fit as far as it can go, eventually tap with the hammer. Make sure that you cannot see the wick through the flame holes; otherwise the wick is not inserted deep enough in the evaporator top. The evaporator is ready for use. Note: Evaporator wicks do not always come off easily, and will not withstand repeated cleaning operations. Spare wicks may be required 7.
