SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION CORONA DISCHARGE (CD) OZONE SYSTEMS Ozone is manufactured in the CD ozone generator by drawing in air, which is composed of 20% oxygen (O 2 ), and exposing it to multiple high voltage electrical discharges. This causes the oxygen molecules to dissociate and reassemble as ozone (O 3 ). The ozone is drawn into the water by an injector/mixer, killing any bacteria, viruses or mold spores it contacts. Ozone is generated on-site, eliminating the need to store toxic and corrosive chemicals. The corona discharge method is the most efficient way to produce large amounts of ozone. 3 - O O 3 Chemical Formula for Corona Discharge Ozone ClearWater Tech manufactures high output corona discharge systems capable of producing enough ozone to substantially reduce the consumption of other chemical disinfectants. This reduction will make the water crystal clear and rainwater soft while allowing for cost savings on chemicals and maintenance. Also, important health advantages will be realized, including no hair discoloration, excessive skin dryness, faded swimming apparel, or irritation to the eyes, nasal passages and throat. Ozone reacts to water-borne contaminants significantly faster than other disinfectants and the primary byproduct is pure oxygen. ClearWater Tech ozone systems are built with the finest components available. All are air cooled and use a venturi injection system to create the best possible contact and mixing of ozone while maintaining a high level of safety. In contrast to ultraviolet ozone generators, corona discharge systems produce a much higher concentration of ozone and in much larger quantities. In addition, the annual expense of replacing lamps and checking ballasts is unnecessary with corona discharge systems. Corona discharge ozone generation is the most economical and effective method to use on large, commercial water applications. Ozone Generator The ozone generator houses the ozone reaction chamber, power supply and all electrical components directly related to the production of ozone. Ozone is produced when the feed gas is exposed to a high voltage electrical current inside the reaction chamber. Air Preparation The ClearWater Tech M-15/AD & CD15/AD ozone system is equipped with a heat regenerative desiccant air dryer built into the same enclosure. Corona discharge ozone generators are much more effective, produce more ozone and require far less maintenance if an air preparation unit is included. The air preparation system lowers the dew point of the feed gas. Moist feed gas (air) will cause nitric acid to form inside the generator which decreases ozone production and if not removed, causes corrosion and eventual failure of the generatorʼs internal components. The ability of the ozone generator to produce ozone is drastically reduced as the dew point rises above -55 C. The air dryer desiccant material has an average life expectancy of five years under normal use. Injector Manifold The ozone gas is injected into the filtered water return line by means of the injector manifold. This allows the ozone to be injected into the water under a vacuum condition, which is the safest technology available. Contact Column (optional upgrade) To maximize the effectiveness of ozone, it must be thoroughly mixed and have adequate time to react with the contaminants in the water before returning to the pool. The contact column is designed to achieve this necessary mixing and contact time. Booster Pump (optional upgrade) It is the booster pump that creates the side stream ozone injection loop. Without this pump, the main circulation pump could be overburdened, slowing the filtered water return and decreasing the turnover rate. The booster pump operates all the ozone mixing/injection equipment and enhances the turnover rate. We recommend the use of a booster pump with systems having a marginal flow rate.
INSTALLATION UNCRATING & INSPECTION All equipment should be thoroughly inspected immediately upon delivery. If any damage is noticed, promptly notify the freight line and request an on-site inspection. Thoroughly inspect all packing materials prior to discarding. Inspect all plumbing fittings and tubing for packing material inadvertently lodged in any openings. The ClearWater Tech corona discharge ozone system consists of three main components: Ozone Generator Air Preparation Venturi Injector Manifold The optional equipment which can be used with the ozone generator on larger installations includes: Contact Column Booster Pump ORP Controller MOUNTING Select a location for the ozone equipment that is as close as possible to the ozone injection point. Arrange the components in a manner suitable for convenient electrical access. The M-15/AD & CD15/AD enclosures are not rain proof, so it is important to choose a location that will keep the system away from direct weather and excessive heat. Four mounting holes are located on the back of the ozone generator for convenient wall mounting. Mounting hardware is not provided. PLUMBING There are two basic installation methods for the M-15/AD and CD15/AD systems: Full Flow, where the ozone is injected directly into the main water return flow, and Side Stream, which requires a booster pump on a new, separate side stream plumbed off of the main water return line. The side stream plumbing is dedicated to the ozone system only. Follow the instructions below for the alternative you will be using: Full Flow Injector Manifold Plumbing Connections Refer to the ʻFull Flow Installationʼ diagram and follow the instructions below if the ozone is being injected directly into the full flow of the poolʼs return line: 1. Tap into the return line after the pump, filter and heater. The ozone injection point should be the last component in line and as far as possible from the bromine injection point. 2. Glue in the proper injector, noting the direction of flow (indicated by an arrow on the injector). 3. Once the injector is installed, the vacuum may be adjusted as described in the ozone operation section. Note: The ozone generator will only energize for 15 seconds or until a vacuum is attained. Tubing Installation Install the check valve assembly into the injector. Connect the 1/4 Teflon tubing from the OZONE OUT fitting on the bottom of the ozone generator to the check valve assembly on the injector. Secure by tightening the fitting around the 1/4 Teflon tubing after insertion.
ELECTRICAL CD15/AD ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS IMPORTANT: The CD15/AD is capable of accepting input from 120 or 240 AC 50/60 Hz. Located on the bottom of the chassis is a voltage selection switch Be sure the switch is in the correct position for the input voltage. The CD15/AD must have a CONSTANT power source. The air dryer is designed to be ON at all times. An external loop is designed into the CD15/ADʼs electronics to control the ozone portion of the unit. All applicable electrical codes must be observed. The CD15/AD will accept any power cord with an IEC plug on one end. It is available with different electrical cords to suit the differing electrical voltages in different nations. The cords available from ClearWater Tech (and their corresponding part numbers and sample nations) are: CRD900 CRD905 CRD910 CRD915 CRD920 IEC by NEMA 5-15P Plug (USA) IEC by CEE 7/7 Plug (continental Europe) IEC by BS 1363/A Plug (Great Britain, Hong Kong, and Singapore) IEC by AS Plug (Australia and New Zealand) IEC by ASEV 1011 Type 12 Plug (Switzerland) Plug the IEC end of the cord into the CD15/AD unit and the other plug end into a standard wall socket to supply power to the unit. IMPORTANT: The power source selected must be continuously energized. The air dryer portion of the CD15/AD unit must have continuous power in order to supply properly prepared air to the ozone generator. The CD15/AD has three modes of control: 4-20 ma Manual External Loop The 4-20 ma Control wil vary the Ozone output based on signal from any device sending out 4-20 ma. To use this feature switch the 3-way switch to the 4-20 position. Using the pre-wired 3 pin amp, connect wire from this terminal to the external device. Be sure to note the positive (+) and negative (-) positions. Manual The manual mode position will override both the 4-20 and the external loop positions. The Ozone output will automatically go the full output and leave the automatic features disabled. External Control Loop Electrical Connections If the CD15/AD is to be used with an external control source (such as an ORP controller, flow switch, pressure switch, pump, or timer), wire the control source signal to the external control dry contact plug on the bottom of the CD15/AD unit as shown in the illustration below. A single pole single throw (SPST) normally open relay should be used. A single pole double throw (SPDT) can be used if desired. Be sure to use the correct relay coil voltage based on the signal voltage (i.e. 24V, 120V, 240V). CWT manufactures several interface devices designed to electrically couple the CD15/AD with an external control signal. Manual Variable Control The Ozone output of the CD15/AD can be manually adjusted with the control switch in the external loop position, assuming the dry contact is closed.

OPERATION INITIAL START-UP AND CALIBRATION After the installation has been completed, the water system operating parameters should remain the same as before installation of the ozone generator. The air preparation system on the ClearWater Tech M-15/AD & CD15/AD is a vacuum type and will require adjustment of the air flow through the system. There are two different methods for achieving proper air flow, both involving an SCFH (Standard Cubic Feet per Hour) gauge. (Note: An SCFH gauge is NOT supplied with either unit.) A gauge can be purchased from CWT for the particular unit. Adjusting Air Flow Through the Injector Use an SCFH gauge to accurately measure the amount of flow through the ozone delivery line on a single speed injector. Follow the directions and illustration below and on the following page to optimize flow through the injector: 1. Install the tube fitting into the upper hole on the back side of the SCFH gauge. 2. With the circulation pump running, disconnect the tubing from the ozone outlet of the ozone generator and connect the tubing to the fitting on the gauge. 3. While holding the gauge vertically, read the amount indicated on the gauge. The optimum flow is 15 SCFH. Note: Do not obstruct the bottom air hole on the gauge. 4. The injector has a ball valve to adjust the amount of flow. To adjust the SCFH, simply install the gauge as above and open the ball valve completely. With the pump running, begin closing the gate valve until the optimum flow is achieved on the SCFH gauge. Once the proper flow is achieved, remove the SCFH gauge and reconnect the ozone supply tubing to the fitting on the injector. SCFH Settings Model Venturi SCFH Operating SCFH Vacuum M-15/AD or 20 to 25 5 to 15-1 to -5 CD15/AD
Operation Procedures continued Adjusting Air Flow with the Flowmeter Kit (Optional - order Part # GAG440) The other method of adjusting the flow is to add the optional Flowmeter Kit. This consists of an SCFH gauge and tubing which is installed permanently on either the M-15/AD or the CD15/AD, fitting into the external air preparation access loop fittings. To install this flowmeter option, follow the directions and illustration below: 1. Loosen the hose clamps and remove the braided tubing between the two brass external loop elbow fittings. The tubing may be cut with a knife to remove, if necessary. Keep the hose clamps and discard the tubing. 2. The brass elbow fitting next to the ozone check valve will remain, but remove the other brass external loop elbow fitting nearer the end of the unit. Using Teflon tape on the threads, install the brass straight barb fitting into the bulkhead fitting from which the elbow fitting was removed. (See illustration below.) 3. Slide one hose clamp onto each piece of braided tubing on the SCFH gauge. Push the SCFH gauge assembly up into the brass external air preparation access loop barb fittings and tighten the hose clamps. 4. The injector has a ball valve to adjust the amount of flow. Open the ball valve completely. With the pump running, begin closing the gate valve until the optimum flow (15 SCFH) is achieved on the SCFH gauge. Once the proper setting has been achieved, it can be maintained by checking this gauge and adjusting the ball valve as needed.

MAINTENANCE FILTER CARE Ozone will keep the pool much cleaner than any other type of water purification system. This is due to the fact that ozone neutralizes body oils and soaps. After ozone kills the bacteria, the by-products of the process are oxygen, carbon dioxide and filterable solids. Since filterable solids are usually at higher levels than with conventional disinfection processes, the filter will have more work to do. Keeping the filter clean will make a noticeable difference in the clarity of the water. It is recommended that a regular filter cleaning schedule is established, or poor water flow through the filter will result. This will have a direct effect on the amount of ozone that enters the water. OZONE GENERATOR A word of caution: There is extremely high voltage inside the ozone generator. If you suspect a problem, disconnect the power to the unit at the service disconnect box or main electrical panel and immediately contact your ClearWater Tech distributor. Inspect the ozone delivery line check valves daily for water seepage and replace the injector check valve yearly. Clean the ozone generator cabinet air filter: This filter must be cleaned regularly. Depending on the location of the unit, it may be necessary to clean the air filter monthly. The filter element is located on the bottom of the cabinet (see illustration below). This is the air intake element for the cooling fan and may therefore require the most frequent cleaning. The element may be cleaned with soap and water and should be dried completely before reinstalling. Note: In a clean environment, this procedure may only need to be performed every three months. IMPORTANT: CLEAN THIS FILTER REGULARLY! FAILURE TO DO SO WILL PROMOTE OVERHEATING AND WILL VOID THE WARRANTY! Fan Cabinet Bottom Plate Fingerguard Fan Filter Element (Pt # FA40) Fan Filter Grill (snaps on and off)
Check valves: Two Kynar check valves are built into the ozone delivery system: one where the ozone tubing attaches to the ozone generator and one where it attaches to the injector. The purpose of these check valves is to prevent water from backing up into the ozone generator. The Teflon ozone delivery line(s) should be inspected daily to insure water is not flowing back into the ozone generator. Check valves should be replaced yearly. Note: The only time it is possible for water to flow back toward the ozone generator is during a system shutdown. Always inspect for water seepage during this time. Dielectric tube: The dielectric tube is located in the reaction chamber of the ozone generator. This tube should be inspected periodically and cleaned if necessary. Once each year, remove the reaction chamber and inspect the dielectric tube for debris. If the tube is cracked, the dielectric tube must be inspected and cleaned. A cracked dielectric should be replaced. Please consult your ClearWater Tech distributor, as the improper installation of the dielectric may cause safety problems! Since the air that is introduced into the reaction chambers is high quality, the dielectric tube should remain clean for at least one year before inspection is required. Removal of the Dielectric Tubes 1. Disconnect all the power to the system, including panel breakers, service disconnect box and main circulation pump interlock. 2. Unplug the electrical terminal on the back of the drive module, disconnect the polypropylene barbed air fitting and the Kynar ozone fitting. 3. Remove the ozone reaction chamber from the back plate. 4. Disconnect the high voltage wire from the coil. Remove the stainless steel nut and Kynar center rod from the center of the reaction chamber. 5. The Teflon end caps can now be gently removed by slowly pulling straight out. The glass dielectric will remain attached to one of the end caps. 6. If the dielectric tube is dirty, clean the glass with Isopropyl alcohol. Do not use a solvent that will leave an oily residue. 7. Clean the inside of the stainless steel reaction chamber with a wire brush as necessary, then wipe with Isopropyl alcohol. 8. Be sure all solvents have evaporated prior to reassembly. Re-Installation of the Dielectric Tube 1. Inspect the O-rings and replace as necessary. 2. Tighten the end caps so that they are approximately 1/8 from the aluminum extrusion. 3. Replace the reaction chamber and connect the air and ozone lines. 4. Connect the high voltage wire to the coil. 5. Readjust the system as necessary (see operating instructions). Annual maintenance agreements are available from ClearWater Tech. Maintenance continued
MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE For All ClearWater Tech, LLC. Corona Discharge Ozone Generators Monthly Service: 1. Clean the Ozone generator cabinet air filters: These filters must be cleaned regularly. Failure to do so will promote overheating and will void the warranty. Depending on the location of the unit, it may be necessary to clean the air filters more often. On the bottom of the cabinet are the air filter elements. These are air intake elements for the cooling fans and may therefore require the most frequent cleaning. All elements may be cleaned with soap and water. Dry completely before reinstalling. 2. Inspect check valves and ozone delivery line: There are two check valves in the ozone delivery line. The purpose of these check valves is to prevent water from backing up into the ozone generator. The Teflon ozone delivery line should be inspected often to ensure water is not flowing back into the ozone generator. During a system shutdown, it is possible for water to flow back toward the ozone generator. Always inspect for water seepage during this time. Note: there is no such thing as a 100% check valve. ClearWater Tech, LLC. recommends that a vacuum break beinstalled with all units operating on dried air feed. Please contact your ClearWater Tech, LLC. distributor for more information about our vacuum break. 3. Inspect desiccant indicator: The indicator serves several functions. The first function is to cool the heated air from the dryer chambers, than it will absorb any remaining moisture and last it will act as indicator for the customer. If the silica has changed from BLUE to PINK (or white) this is an indication of severe humid environments or possible water back flow. Yearly Services: 1. Replace the cooling fan filters. Failure to do so will promote over heating. 2. Replace the air inlet particulate filter on the ozone generator. This filter prevents small particulates from entering the reaction chamber. It must be replaced annually to prevent clogging. 3. Replace all check valves. There is no such thing as a 100% check valve. Yearly replacement can prevent many of the back flow problems. All stainless steel check valves should be rebuilt. Along with yearly check valve replacement, ClearWater Tech, LLC. recommends that a vacuum break be installed with all units operating on dried air feed. Please contact your ClearWater Tech, LLC. distributor for more information about our vacuum break. 4. Clean glass dielectric and reaction chamber(s). Wipe clean both the outside of the dielectric and the inside of the stainless steel reaction chamber with isopropyl alcohol. Be very careful! Scratches in the conformal coating may damage the dielectric upon reassembly. Do not use any solvents that will leave an oily residue. Disassemble, clean, and assemble reaction chambers as specifically described in the ClearWater Tech, LLC. owners manual. If there are scratches in the conformal coating, nitric acid build up, or cracks in the dielectric contact your ClearWater Tech, LLC. distributor for further service.
Maintenance schedule continued Replace the desiccants. On all AD-40 air dryers and ozone generators with built in air dryers, replace both the heating desiccant and external indicating desiccant yearly. ClearWater Tech, LLC. air dryers are designed to be on 24 hours a day. Failure to do so will allow moist air to be introduced into the reaction chamber. Improperly dried feed air will cause nitric acid formation and premature dielectric failure. Every Three Years: 1. Replace all cooling fans in the ozone generator. Failure to do so will promote overheating. 2. Hone and rebuild reaction chambers. In addition to cleaning the dielectric, the reaction chamber should be honed. A honing tool is available through ClearWater Tech, LLC. distributors. The reaction chamber should be cleaned as instructed in the owners manual. The glass dielectric should be replaced. Any scratches, imperfections in the conformal coating, or chipping in the glass itself can cause serious damage to the ozone generator. The reaction chamber should be rebuilt using new O-rings to ensure a proper seal. Care should be taken to ensure that the dielectric does not get damaged during this process. General Notes: All service should be performed by ClearWater Tech, LLC. factory trained personnel. Ozone generators producing concentrations of more than 1% require specific ozone resistant materials to be used. The owners manual specifies materials that meet these standards. All replacement parts can be ordered through ClearWater Tech, LLC. distributors. Failure to use materials that do not meet these standards or repairs done by non-factory trained personnel will void all warranties.
