6 3 Cleaning and conditioning Doctor analysis and optimization Composite doctor blades for cleaning and conditioning For conditioning and smooth cleaning of ceramic coatings Voith has developed doctor blades with variable carbon fiber content. Additionally, the blade materials contain different fillers and particle sizes. The fillers not only provide abrasive properties for conditioning of the cover surface, but also serve to keep the surface roughness and good sheet release. Composite doctor blades for cleaning For cleaning purposes or short term application on drying cylinders the cleaning blades contain densely distributed, large cleaning fillers. The use of high-performance doctor blades minimizes the material consumption and improves the wear profile of the blade. Variations and deviations on holder and beams cannot be compensated by the doctor. To identify these variations and to optimize the doctoring situation, Voith offers targeted investigations: Microscopic analyses of the blade angle Survey of wear cross profiles Investigations of mechanical properties and chemical composition Every single factor that could directly or indirectly influence the doctoring is taken under consideration. After finishing the investigations you receive a detailed report including a summary of the test results and suggestions as well as recommen dations for improvements. 6

10 POLYMER SkyPoly Blade for thermoplast roll covers The SkyPoly doctor blade is specifically designed for use on rolls with soft plastic covers in the wet end and the press section. It offers a high level of cleaning efficiency without wear on the cover. SkyPoly consists of a thermoplast material made of modified, extratough polyethylene. The friction coefficient of the blade is especially low, which means the wear due to friction on the cover is reduced to a minimum. At the same time, the strength of SkyPoly over the period of its use remains very high, and the blade achieves a high level of cleaning efficiency. 11 POLYMER SkySeal Plus and SkySeal Flex Advanced technology for the dryer section The SkySeal family contributes to improved paper quality and runnability. With its unique abrasion-resistant material, SkySeal Plus offers the best protection against abrasion and deformation. Thanks to its flexible material, SkySeal Flex optimally adapts to demanding positions. Both sealing strips ensure improved sealing, provide continually high performance and reduce overall energy consumption. Improved mechanical properties enable problem-free handling. Due to a very simple installation process, machine maintenance is quick and easy. SkySeal sealing strips are available for all Voith stabilizers equipped with MultiSeal technology. Due to the exclusive use of highly loadable carbon fibers, cleaning and conditioning are optimized. SkyCarbon offers excellent mechanical properties and works perfectly in sections where less friction and wear is required. The strength of cleaning fibers in the direction of the paper are increased compared to the supporting fibers crosswise to the direction of the paper in order to improve cleaning effectivity and vibration dampening. This mixture combines glass fibers, which have a good cleaning effect, with carbon fibers that lengthen the service life. The combination guarantees optimal cleaning as well as a long service life of the doctor and is especially economical. SkyComp 20 is designed for a high mechanical load. This mixture combines the good cleaning effect of glass fibers with the service life lengthening effect of carbon fibers. With SkyComp 40 doctor blades, the portion of mechanically, highly resilient carbon fibers is increased. The conditioning of the roll surface can therefore be improved in comparison to the standard SkyComp 20 design. SkyComp 40 is designed for high mechanical loads. The strength of cleaning fibers in the direction of the paper are increased compared to the supporting fibers crosswise to the direction of the paper in order to improve cleaning effectivity and vibration dampening. This mixture combines the good cleaning effect of glass fibers with the service life lengthening effect of carbon fibers. With SkyComp 60 doctor blades, the portion of mechanically, highly resilient carbon fibers is increased. The conditioning of the roll surface can therefore be improved in comparison to SkyComp 40 doctor blades. SkyComp 60 is designed for a high mechanical load. 16 COMPOSITE SkyDur Reliably cleaned roll surface SkyDur is a doctor blade consisting of 100% glass fibers with an optimal combination of cleaning and supporting fibers. The mechanical strength of the blade is especially high, making it ideal for increased mechanical loads. The supporting strength of the fibers crosswise to the direction of the paper is improved in comparison to the cleaning fibers in the direction of the paper. 17 COMPOSITE SkyDur T Intensive cleaning efficiency at high temperatures SkyDur T is a fiber composite doctor blade with an optimal combination of cleaning fibers and glass fibers. The fiber composite is especially temperature-resistant, which means the blade is designed for a higher temperature load than SkyDur. The SkyDur T glass fibers crosswise to the direction of the paper are stronger than the cleaning fibers in the direction of the paper. An increased portion of functional fibers facilitates better conditioning of the roll surface with comparable product characteristics. 18 COMPOSITE SkyGrid Blade for excellent cleaning efficiency SkyGrid consists of a fiber composite that contains particles graduated according to their size, along with cleaning fibers and reinforcement fibers. Together with the cleaning fibers, these functional particles create a well cleaned and finely conditioned roll surface. With SkyGrid, the reinforcement fibers crosswise to the direction of the paper are stronger than the cleaning fibers in the direction of the paper. Cleaning and polishing materials add strength to the entire composite, enabling SkyGrid doctor blades to withstand a high mechanical load. 19 COMPOSITE SkyTex L Gentle cleaning at lowest wear rates SkyTex L is designed for medium mechanical loads. The uniform distribution of the fabrics contributes to gentle doctoring. Additional fillers reduce the wear rate of the blade and roll cover. SkyTex L is a fabric composite that works perfectly with soft roll covers and enables optimal results through gentle doctoring. The blade can be equipped with standard guiding systems and can be fit to special geometries if required. SkyTex L is resistant to most typically used chemicals in the pulp and paper production. 20 COMPOSITE SkyTop T Gentle cleaning at high temperatures SkyTop T consists of a fiber composite that contains the proven combination of cleaning and reinforcement fibers as well as particles graduated according to their size. The abrasive fillings interact with the various fibers to create a well cleaned, perfectly conditioned roll surface. SkyTop T can be used in high temperature applications up to 240 C. 21 COMPOSITE SkyTop Plus Intensive cleaning efficiency and optimum sheet release SkyTop Plus consists of a fiber composite that contains particles graduated according to size, along with the proven combination of cleaning fibers and reinforcement fibers. Together with the low-friction, low-wear carbon fibers, they create a well cleaned and finely conditioned roll surface. Additional special liners improve sheet release and allow optimal adaptation of the blade to the roll surface. SkyTop Plus also withstands extreme mechanical loads. The reinforcement fibers crosswise to the direction of the paper are stronger than the cleaning fibers in the direction of the paper. Cleaning and polishing materials strengthen the entire composite. 22 COATED SkyCoat HM / HM2 Quickly achieving the desired profile SkyCoat HM / HM2 is a hard metal coated steel blade that is produced with very narrow tolerances for application in coating machines. The hard metal coating consists of a cobalt matrix, tungsten carbide and a special alloy to increase the wear resistance. The desired profile is quickly achieved and a constant wear rate with high durability is assured. This allows for the most advanced cleaning of the cover and produces the best surface condition over the long run.
