3 S-Serie Screw S-VSI 300 OXY for protective gas packaging Dry running screw vacuum pump offers important reductions in operating and maintenance costs Replacing air by protective gas (MAP) in food packaging extends shelf life and improves the visual presentation of food. The gases principally used for this purpose are carbon dioxide, nitrogen and oxygen. Adding even small amounts of oxygen to air markedly speeds up combustion processes and can cause considerable damage to machinery and equipment. Elmo Rietschle has developed a dry running screw vacuum pump for packaging under protective gas which needs no coolant or sealing medium in the suction chamber. Food to be canned is introduced through a tube into the chamber. Labelling In the labelling of containers made of glass, plastics or metal, vacuum pumps ensure the correct positioning of the labels during the cuttingout stage. Degassing water In the production of high quality drinks (mineral waters, fruit juices etc.) water must be used which was previously degassed under vacuum in suitable systems. Vacuum packaging Tray sealing machine From stacking to evacuating and capping prefabricated trays, all processes take place under vacuum. Food processing Vacuum filler In a vacuum filling machine dough-shaped prepared foods such as meat, fish, cheese, bread, sausage etc. are separated into portions and packaged under vacuum. This improves homogenity and avoids air inclusions. Extended shelf life and excellent colour stability are further advantages. Vacuum tumbler In the vacuum tumbler, food cut into pieces such as meat, fish, salads, delicacies etc. is mixed with spices, worked and refined. Vacuum cutter The vacuum cutter is particularly suitable for the production of patés. 21 X-Series Systems Vacuum and pressure for the glass industry WITTIG Rotary Vanes When producing the hollow glassware large volumes of compressed air and vacuum are required. High quality and reliability of all units and components is of prime importance, because equipment failure during production invariably means extremely high costs. For continuous 24-hour operation, rotary vane compressors and vacuum pumps offer the best solution. Compressed air is used to form the blanks in the production machines. A compressed air system is needed to control the various shaping devices and the general air supply of the factory. Rotary vane vacuum pumps are used to evacuate the glass moulds. 27 F-Series Radial G-Series Side Channel L-Series Liquid Ring V-Series Rotary Vane C-Series Claw S-Series Screw Calibration The thermoplastic molten tube leaving the machine is cooled and, if necessary, calibrated under press quenching with the help of vacuum pumps. Plastic welding The hot air that is needed for welding is heated to between 200 to 300 C using heating cartridges and is accelerated to a high velocity using a blower. EPS foaming Using a side channel blower, pre-expanded polystyrene balls are blown into a mold where steam is then applied. At final polymerization, the balls are cured into the molded component. To ensure that the molded components do not lose their shape when removed from the mold, they must be cooled with water. With the vacuum pumps, the water vaporizes in a flash. Extruder degasification Vacuum pumps remove air pockets and moisture from the melted plastic mass. They extract all of the low-molecule substances, ensuring optimal quality: smooth surfaces, greater strength, better insulation capabilities and a lower outgassing rate. Granulate conveying Plastic molding presses / extruders are automatically loaded with the help of our blowers or vacuum pumps. For this purpose, a vacuum is produced in the material container. The granulate is conveyed through the air in the tube. Contact-free plastic film redirection Continuous plastic sheets and films are redirected contact-free with air that is applied on turning bars. Vinyl chloride gas extraction and compression When the PVC is produced, liquid vinyl chloride is pressurized to polymerization in the autoclave and polymerized PVC is formed. The gaseous monomers that are produced as a result are pumped, compressed and liquefied under vacuum. Cooling & drying extruder products The hot plastic material that is discharged from the extruder must be cooled down quickly. This is done using blast air or by cooling the material in a water bath, followed by a drying process. Deaeration of rubber components / evacuation In production stations that manufacture rubber components, vacuum is used for evacuating from the die cast mold thereby preventing the formation of air pockets and accelerating the rubber mass. Gluing plastic parts In the production of glued composite materials, panels are secured to each other with an adhesive and pressed into a sheet. The sheet sack is evacuated for this purpose, so that the atmospheric pressure can produce the required compression.

43 F-Series Radial G-Series Side Channel L-Series Liquid Ring V-Series Rotary Vane C-Series Claw S-Series Screw Holding & lifting Vacuum is used to clamp work pieces to the tables of machining tools. To ensure that the work piece cannot move during the machining process, a minimum vacuum level must be maintained or exceeded. Timber drying To speed the drying process, vacuum pumps are used to gradually lower the pressure within the timber drying chambers. Drying times may be cut from weeks to just three or four days. The chamber may be later pressurized with steam and the air removed to prevent the wood from cracking and changing color by oxidation. Radial fans may be used to circulate the steam which heats the wood to dry it. The condensate from the steam removes solvents, fatty acids plus other elements from the drying chamber as it is drained away. Impregnation Wood may be protected from the destructive influences of heat, moisture, insect and micro-organism attack. This protection may be applied either before or after the wood is processed into a finished item. Soaking the wood in preservative is a common practice, but preservative only penetrates a few millimeters under the surface of the wood. Further protection may be achieved when the wood is first de-gassed and dried under vacuum, because then the preservative is able to penetrate much further past the wood surface. Subsequent positive pressure in the treatment chamber will encourage even deeper protection. Extraction systems Wood dust and shavings from woodworking machines can be removed to bulk containers for recycling with mobile or central vacuum systems. Filters are used to trap the wood and separate it from the air, protecting the pumps from harm by contamination. Coating & bonding / veneering / form surface coating The fine quality surface finishes applied to some timber products may be achieved under vacuum conditions. Components may be formed, shaped, bonded and veneered in a vacuum bag or on a vacuum table. The labour, energy and material costs associated with these processes may be reduced, particularly where larger items are being processed.
