2 Open and closed combustion Open combustion A conventional open fire works on the principle of 'open' combustion (fig. 1). For example, the oxygen required for the combustion process is drawn from the area in which the fire is installed (usually the living room). In most cases, it is also possible to install a gas fire into an existing hearth. This is still known as 'open' combustion. In newly built homes and homes that have been optimally insulated, the installation of such appliances is only allowed if special measures are taken regarding ventilation. Therefore if you would like to keep an open fire with open combustion, you will have to fit a special pipe to the outside of the building for the supply of fresh air. This pipe usually runs through the floor and the cavity under the floor to the outside air. (NB: Connecting the pipe to the cavity only will not be sufficient). The pipe will usually have a diameter of at least 150 mm and must not be sealed off, so always be aware of cold draughts. In addition, you will of course need a chimney duct to discharge the products of combustion. Closed combustion In most cases, a much simpler and cheaper solution is what is known as a closed combustion (fig. 2). In 'closed combustion the oxygen required is no longer drawn from the room the appliance is installed in but directly from outside. A connection is made through the outer wall (or the roof) using a combined inlet-outlet pipe (concentric diameter 80/150 mm). This pipe carries both the oxygen into the fire and the products of combustion out. 2)

3 Possible connections Closed combustion appliances with a top connection can be connected in one of the following ways: Directly through the outside wall (fig. 1) This will require the vertical installation of at least one metre of concentric pipe. A 90 o bend is then fitted, followed by the necessary length of concentric pipe(s) to extend through the outside wall and a wall flue terminal kit. Directly through the roof (sloping or flat) (figs. 2 and 3) The concentric pipes are built from the appliance upwards (at least one metre must be vertical). Bends may be fitted depending on the situation. Besides the required vertical flue terminal kit, a universal lead tile set is used for a sloping roof and a flat roof tile for a flat roof. It is recommended to look at the instructions for installation. Example situations and calculations are given in the drawings below. The maximum length is the sum of the pipe length plus the equivalent length of the elbow pipes. In general the following will apply: a 90 o elbow pipe counts as 2 metres of pipe length a 45 o elbow pipe counts as 1 metre of pipe length If the pipe is connected through the outside wall or roof, the length of the roof or wall duct need not be taken into account. The horizontal pipe length may never exceed 4 metres. 3)

4 Connection to an existing chimney Closed-combustion decorative gas fires can be connected to an existing chimney. Dru has a special chimney connection set. Please consider the following: The length of the chimney duct must not exceed 10 or 12 metres, depending on the type of fire being installed (see previous page 'Maximum lengths of concentric connection material ). The diameter of the chimney must be at least 150 mm. The chimney must be cleaned well before installing the fire. dd )

6 Concentric connection material / 2 Guarantee All flue materials are made exclusively for Dru fires and tested and approved together with the appliances. The diameter of the concentric pipes is 80/150 mm (inner pipe 80 mm, outer pipe 150 mm) or 100/150 mm. The use of these materials will ensure that the appliance works well and as safely as possible. If the appliance is installed using any flue materials other than those specified by Dru, the appliance guarantee will become invalid and any consequences thereof will be for the user s own risk. The material used is lightweight, rustproof, extremely strong, resistant to high temperatures and made of thick-walled aluminium.
